That was it for me. I know some get excited over long-lasting snowpack, but I am a snowfall bottom line guy. We got 2" qpf with temps in the teens and got 6.5" snow out of it. Meanwhile places like Pensacola, FL and Morehead City, NC got 10" and 16" clean snows the last two years

I had no idea sunny and 40 could feel so warm! It's gonna take a long time for this ice/snowpack to melt

So right! We came soooo close if not for that pesky warm layer. We need a big dog 12-inch plus so bad! Here's the 12-plus inchers at my location: 1979, 1983, 1987, 1993 (not everywhere), 1996, 2000, 2003, 2006 (not everywhere), 2010, 2014, 2016. Average of once in 3.7 years and no gap longer than 6 years, and now we are sitting at a 10-year gap and counting. That all said, having a long-lasting snowpack in a Nina is a pretty big deal.

I just cleared off our deck so the dog has some nice sun to sit in once we get to the 30s. Breaking up big bricks of ice and sliding them off the snow made me think of the beast of a snow fort kids could make with this stuff.

Back in the 80s when I was a kid in Calvert, we had 6" of snow with a half inch ice glaze on top. We had a bright full moon with temps in the teens one night and it looked like a different planet with the shiny, silver landscape as far as you could see. We were taking 2-foot squares of ice and sliding them down a long hill. You could hear them sliding into the woods hundreds of feet away.

Funny thing about that is even Pensacola got a better snow (10") last year than we have had in 10 years here

Some neighbors with a sloped driveway did this! They were out there breaking squares of ice, turning them upside down, and sliding them down the driveway. Then they had a few inches of powder to push. Smart! Their driveway also faces south which is nice. I left about an inch of sleet on ours which is now pure, smooth ice

Oh believe me if we didn't have so much going on with our new house being finished next week I absolutely would have gone down there! I've already told my wife that living in lower southern MD and being retired, I am going to snow chase a couple times each winter. For one thing, I wanna see a lake effect snow.

We got her to ask her company of she could remote work a few days next week and get up here, and they said yes so she came home Friday. We are so glad because her area looks to be hardest hit with unofficial reports of 20-plus inches! Going down to 10 degrees tonight. That area is going to be paralyzed. Incredible storm! I am so glad our daughter, who lives in an apartment by herself in Newport, was able to come home to MD on Friday. She'd have been stuck for a while. I hope no one loses power down there!

Our daughter came home from Morehead City to MD to escape the storm. If we weren't so busy right now, I would have gone down there! Keep the obs and webcams coming folks and enjoy!

Gimme that for the first half of February. Seasonal but with one good track storm with a clean snow. I'd be ready for spring then

Your area got nailed last February too, congrats! How rare are 12-inch snowfalls in back-to-back years there? We've gone 10 years now without one in the DC/Balt region.

How disruptive would 8-12" be in that area? I can't imagine they have many plows? Our daughter is in Morehead City. Sorry of the off-topic SE forum folks! Hope you get a good storm.

Man, Norfolk area snow lovers living the good life! They got that 12" storm last Feb and about 17" for the winter which blew away central MD's paltry total last year. Now they're looking at another 8-12" storm. Last weekend's storm here with 6.5 snow then some sleet was the most since 2019, but I wish we could get a 8-12 all snow here.

This reminds me of the winter of '77 in MD where we got a moderate snow of around 6" with a crust of ice followed by weeks of frigid and dry. The glacier lasted for weeks and January was an incredible -12 departure at DCA, but it lacked in the total snow department.

Can't believe the Challenger tragedy was 40 years ago today. I remember it so clearly - I was at Florida State and everyone was just stunned silent walking around campus and some crying.

I measured 6.5 snow and 3.5 sleet which aligns perfectly with official reports of 10.8 from Clarksburg and 9.2 from Germantown on either side of my spot.

My sister in California, MD says freezing rain there now and a glaze already developing. Nearby temps are 26 at St. Mary's Airport and 28 at Pax River. Not good with lots of precip to go!

Just think, since sleet has a 3:1 ratio, multiply by 4 if it was powder snow. Dang!
