Next summer I am going to try a few in large pots, then bring them in for the winter. I love those plants -- flower all the way until freeze, low maintenance, butterflies and hummingbirds, and most importantly, our hordes of rabbits and deer won't touch it. Looks like we got a nice weekend incoming!

My little warm spot got to 33. I checked my tropical milkweeds and lantanas and they live another day, which confirms it (they die instantly at 32). It's funny how this spot is one of the last in the area to freeze, even compared to Gaithersburg. Wow at Staunton reporting 22! I think tonight is the night though as my point/click has low of 26. I will go with 30.

Just incredible. Year to date showing range from 30 inches in far north MD to over 70 in southern MD.

Great stories. Can you imagine this board if that happened today with some getting 12-17" and areas not far away getting 2-4? Looks like southern MD is gonna get some more heavy rain tonight. Sorry about that Waterworlders!

Wow what a story. You were right in the jackpot! I missed that one as I was at FSU. My parents in Calvert told me about it.

The maples behind my house are all bare now. It's funny watching the ginko street trees in parts of the neighborhood -- they turn bright yellow for a couple days then dump all their leaves literally in hours, even if clam weather. They did this yesterday. Steady rain starting to move in now and 66 degrees, which was basically the low temp. I still have potted plants on the deck full of flowers. Hard to believe we had a massive snowstorm 33 years ago today!

Yeah I call it "the dark" when the trees are bare, no gardening, and it's usually dreary, and snow is very rare most years anyway. I'm going to have to fix that when I retire in 5 years because 5-6 months of dark is way too much. But man is today beautiful!

Wow the wind is ROARING out there! This should strip a lot of the remaining leaves off the trees. Lots of raking coming up next weekend with short sleeve shirts on.

Lantanas are annuals here and have to be replanted each year. As soon as we have the first freeze, they are gone. Looking downright wintry feeling tomorrow with strong winds and low 40s, but that is a big ridge for later into the week and next weekend. Get those grills ready!

Heavy rain east of I-95 and just light stuff up here. Shocking! My mother and niece just voted in person down in Calvert which took an hour and 45 minutes. They said the heavy rain started just as they finished and they feel bad for all those people in line. I somehow escaped the growing season ending for NW Montgomery and my tropical milkweeds and lantana are fine. I should be able to keep them for a while longer now. Gaithersburg airport reached 30 and that would have killed them instantly. This is one of the lantanas taken yesterday.

This one hurt. Even Germantown proper looks to have gotten it good based on Radarscope. The meat of the storm missed me by two miles.

And it splits with the strong part going into Gaithersburg. Just a garden variety shower with a little lighting. This spot is so uncanny.

That Leesburg cell is headed right for me...we'll see though.

My mother still talks about Hazel. She remembers those big, round metal trashcans they had back then flying down the street in her Cheverly, MD neighborhood.

Still raining with thunder in Germantown with clear blue sky to the west. Was pretty wild for a couple minutes with torrential rain blowing in sheets.

Main line is approaching and I'm hearing lots of thunder with this one.

Really pouring now, but no thunder. Darn gutter is already clogged again.

I'm just NE of Germantown -- just some mod/hvy rain so far. I don't like that hooky looking part on the SW end of that cell.

I told family, friends and co-workers that last Tuesday's snow might be the only one of the winter. I hope I get shamed mercilessly.

Yup. Although before last night's 1.25 inch deluge (that's a deluge for my area), I was sitting at just 0.9 for the month. Mad at myself for not cutting my approx. 8" high grass before the rain last night. Uh oh.

I voted for PD1 - 1979. I was in northern Calvert, which was the bullseye for that storm. I don't know what the actual accum was with the extreme drifting, but DCA I think was 19" and the amounts were much heavier by the Bay so say 30-35". The wind was UNBELIEVABLE, like 40 mph with gusts to 60. It was like a hurricane of snow with howling winds and such whiteout that the woods just 75 feet behind the house were completely obscured at times. One observer in the area later reported 6" in one hour that morning. My mother and her friend who was stuck with us tried to walk the 100 feet to where the cars were and actually got disoriented. They were legit scared when they got back saying that they almost got literally lost in the front damn yard! My mom said it was hard to breathe with the snow and winds so extreme. When it was over, cars were only lumps in the snow and we had 6-7 foot drifts. One funny story is when my dad finally got his '74 Charger dug out, it would not start. He opened the hood and found the whole engine compartment completely packed tight with snow. I have of course seen some great storms in Germantown since 1995, but NOTHING for me can top the Great White Hurricane of 1979.

Just visiting to say hi -- I'm in Germantown but grew up in Owings (about 4 miles south of Dunkirk) so I am very familiar with how things go in the winter down there. But it's fun when it goes the other way isn't it? Remember the big January 25, 2000 storm? I ended up with just 7" from that, but my parents and siblings who still live down there (Calvert and St Marys) got like 15-20" and they were all over me LOL! I got lots of phone calls that day. My best memory was the Blizzard of '79. Northern Calvert was the jackpot in that monster. It still tops all of the storms I've seen since in my new area, including 1996 and 2010. I hope this Sunday night/Monday system takes a nice track and puts a swath of good snows west-to-east across the whole area. Good luck!
