Looks like some nasty cells are gonna push through Memphis within the next few hours. Smaller line of storms but they are packing some serious rainfall.
-
I didn’t think about it from the leaf perspective, that’s a great point. And yeah central ark is gonna get a lotttt of rain. I’m only worried about tornados personally, people on the east side of this system need to be on the look out for that. The storm surge in some of the Louisiana coastal areas looks catastrophic, definitely gonna keep those folks in my prayers.

I’m still thinking Arkansas takes the brunt of the tropical storm. Won’t take much to put west Tn in the mix though. Definitely something we need to keep a eye on

4 weeks until fall y’all, We are getting closer!! Fun fact- in Memphis we’ve had four LA Niña winters since 2010. 3 of those 4 years produced measurable snow days. 1.8in on January 16th, 2018. 2.0in on January 6th, 2017. And 3.1in on February 11, 2011. January has been the best winter month for Memphis in La Niña setups over the last ten years statistically. ENSO neutral conditions have favored more December snows with 2 separate systems dropped .9in on December 26th, 2012, and a trace amount on December 30th, 2013. The daily snowfall record in Memphis of 14.3in also fell during a moderate La Niña on December 22, 1963. Long story short- La Niña winters are historically good for west Tn. Soon I’ll crunch some numbers and see how that translates to east and middle Tennessee winters.

That’s what it looking like right now, we’ve got a 60% chance of La Niña for the fall, and 55% chance of it persisting through the winter. And yeah definitely significant if it pans out, we do well in La Niña situations here snow wise. At least for Memphis, I need to look at the numbers for east Tn to see how they match up compared to the Memphis numbers.

Definitely looking like a La Niña brewing, what ya thinking @jaxjagman

When we want spring weather in March or early April, then we will all get some snow. I’m calling it now, lol. All this moisture is really saturating my golf course btw. I don’t know if it’s ever gonna dry out. -

Wow -
Had some serious thunder and some lighting come thru. Thought it was a tornado coming cause it was so loud, haven’t had that happen to me before. Outside of that nothing to out of the ordinary happened. Definitely some power in a few if those cells though

Good stuff, guys. Hope y’all can get the full changeover and pick up some snow!! -
@jaxjagman did you see the pictures of multiple big trucks blown over on the Tennessee River Bridge I-40 in Decatur county. Looks like 4 or 5 guys had a rough day, wind gust atop the bridge must of been insane.

I guess it’s a good thing that this system moved through just after sunrise instead of during the night. There’s a few neighborhoods that got hit pretty hard. I Have a friend in Memphis who sent me a picture, his neighbor had a enormous Oak tree fall thru the front of the house. Lots of power outages as well.
-
Interesting morning in west TN today. Had multiple severe cells come thru, lots of rain and wind. Apparently Memphis had a tornado touch down around the cottonwood apartment complex area.
-
I have a confirmed tornado on the ground 20 miles from my house right now. I’m under a tornado Warning until 1:30. I’ll keep you guys updated
-
Penn state- that’s awesome man. I hope it went well for you guys!! Thanks for the update on the severe side of the spectrum.
-
@jaxjagman- you expecting any severe cells from tropical storm Barry over the next few day?

I used to work in a lot of power plants doing switchgear Maintenance on the circuit breaks throughout the plant. All the turbine floors are usually on the 3rd or 4th floor of the plants. First floor is usually a huge open area that runs just about the whole floor with a large crane running in the rafters to move large items down and up from the other floors, and you’ll have a few other non essential things on the first floor. I share all this to say that most power plants can handle a serious flood better than most would think due to the way they are layed out. They also have tons of extra drainage valves through your the plant that are there to help in the unlikely event that a fire happens and the fire suppression system cuts on. Those drains could also help if you had flooding from the river the plant was on as well.
