  1. I was in it on 95 in South Carolina and bailed over to a US highway. Between the deluge, the standing water, the stiff wind, and the idiots going 80, I opted for a slower-but-safer route. Finally started letting up around Brunswick, GA. Southern NC also has all that construction now. Ugly. Sent from my Pixel 8 using Tapatalk
  2. I'm on my way to FL but am stopped for the night in South Carolina along I-95. I'm hoping that the bulk of the rain will be out of my way by about noon, since I have another five hours to drive. Would not want to be on the road when the worst of the blob is overhead.
  3. Belated fog post from yesterday, looking from the Kennedy Center across to Roosevelt Island, with a foggy void where Key Bridge and the Georgetown Waterfront usually are.
  4. I just came back to DC on the PA turnpike from Ohio to Breezewood. Not as far along as I expected/hoped, but a decent start.
  5. People think I'm crazy when I tell them I'm now spending both summers and winters in northern Wyoming. "But all that cold weather and snow!" "Exactly!" And then I say that I love snow but that it basically doesn't snow in DC anymore.
  6. Earlier TWC showed video of street flooding in Ft. Myers Beach. Hope people up the coast who won't "take a direct hit" are noting that.
  7. A few years ago I drove US98 from Ft. Walton Beach all the way to Tampa (with a detour to Cedar Key). A whole lot of Dollar Generals are going to get washed away on this track.
  8. I'm still mad at Kate for cancelling the REM show I had tickets to in Tallahassee (though, as a Gator then and now, a little bit of Tallawhackee destruction made up for it.
  9. They are going to have to retire "I" names altogether.
  10. Looking forward to getting some tropical remnants--in Wyoming.
  11. This storm has La Plata special written all over it.
  12. Turning out to be just the weather I like at the ballpark. Not sunny, and a good non-sweaty temp.
  13. Just caught this, looking at the Bighorns from south of Sheridan.
  14. Definitely drier, even in the comparatively "lush" area in the eastern Bighorn foothills. I think the heavy wet snow is more likely to come in Oct/Nov and March/April. I'm guesstimating here, but it looks like Sheridan reported about .7" QPF over Jan. 26-28, and an observer not too far from me reported 13.4" (not sure the exact time frame and I think snow was still falling). So that's a pretty good ratio :), though the wind was definitely blowing in a good upslope direction. Got some more snow coming next week, will pay closer attention. Right now the big diff in the forecast is QPF (Euro 1.3", GFS .8").
  15. @Chinook What ratios would you generally use for snowfall out in these parts? (Wyoming, Colorado, etc) Looked like your post earlier this week was using a range of about 10:1-15:1? I know Kuchera maps are called clown maps for a reason , but I was wondering if they handle things better where precip type is not much of an issue. Thanks for helping me get up to speed on an entirely new climate!
  16. I hate mentioning the snow I'm getting out at the Home on the Range, but after CWG retweeted a video I posted of the serious blowing snow I had yesterday, the Weather Channel contacted me and they've shown it a few times on the air today.
  17. Looks like next week could be interesting in WY, MT, and the Dakotas. Models have been sniffing something out for the Feb. 22-ish time frame since it came into the long-range GFS.
  18. I have a plane ticket for Wednesday that goes DCA-ORD-DEN-SHR. Except I'm already in SHR (long story) and kept the ticket on the hopes that maybe bad weather would allow me to cancel it and actually get my points back instead of just a voucher. So, I'm rooting for you, Denver!
  19. 923 SXUS75 KBYZ 282343 RERBYZ RECORD EVENT REPORT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BILLINGS MT 443 PM MST SAT JAN 28 2023 ...RECORD DAILY PRECIPITATION MAXIMUM SET AT SHERIDAN WY... A PRECIPITATION RECORD OF 0.68 WAS SET AT SHERIDAN WY TODAY. THIS BREAKS THE OLD RECORD OF 0.47 SET IN 1916.
  20. Finally got my big snow here in Big Horn WY. [emoji1783] I didn't set up a board, but I think we're close to a foot and it's still coming down. (An observer a couple miles from here reported 13.4", though they might have a smidge more elevation and are closer to the mountain.) Upslope ftw.
  21. I've finally got a storm to track out here at my Home on the Range, but I have to say it's nowhere near as much fun without you guys! (there's not a big Wyoming contingent over in the other forum--ie, no one). Also, I'm finally learning about orographic lift and upslope snow after years of zoning out any discussions of it.
  22. My strategy of heading to the high plains at New Year's to get buried in snow has not yet worked. Some still left from the pre-Christmas blizzard, at least, and the mountain looks pretty. I'm stuck rooting for 256-hr storms like everyone else right now.
  23. @ChinookAny chance this storm will nudge further north than progged? I'm up near the WY-MT border near Sheridan and it looks like I'll be fringed unless the track reverts to what it had been forecast to do a few days ago.
  24. Currently -21 on my patio in north central WY.
  25. How are we feeling about mid afternoon flights into DCA from Florida on Friday? Elderly father arriving, and I have to pick him up and drive him to Bethesda. Even if he arrives, I fear a Carmageddon scenario on the roads.
