We easily picked up an additional 8 inches after midnight. That gave us a storm total of 18". That is the most for this area since 1980. High is our current temp of 31. Low was 17.

High of 34.0 yesterday and made it down to 12.6 this morning, our coldest reading of the season

I think that, overall, this is the coldest morning this decade for the Carolinas and southern Virginia. It might have eclipsed December 2022.

We hit 11 this morning. I do believe this is the coldest since I moved into this house in 2004. No frozen pipes. Woohoo. Not looking forward to the electric bill.

The CLT low was 10F as of 7:15AM. So unlikely it made it to 9F though not impossible since that’s still a little before sunrise. The 10F was enough to tie the record for the day.

 KSAV had 19 for yesterday’s low, which was a new record, beating the old record of 23. This ties with the 19s in Dec ‘22, Jan ‘18, and Jan ‘14 for the coldest since Jan ‘11’s 18. To put this into even better perspective, the coldest there since 1990 is only a little lower, 17! The last Feb with it this cold was 1996. Only 8 other Febs since 1874 have had a low colder than 19 meaning this is ~95 percentile for a coldest Feb low!

 Today’s low there was 23.

Cracked 40 for first time since January 23

High 42, low 11. Didn't seem like much melting going on, just evaporating. Crazy.

My morning low just west of Eden was 4.1°. There were several other locations in Rockingham County that were colder. The coldest temperatures I could find were in the Madison area, where two personal weather stations, KNCMADIS60 and KNCMADIS38 dropped to -4.5° and -3.5°, respectively. KSIF dropped to 2.3° at 7:35am.

Both the Dan and Smith rivers are frozen over in several locations. The first picture is of the Dan taken from the Hwy 87 bridge, and the second, the Smith taken in North Spray.

I've only seen this much ice on the rivers a handful of times over the years. In January 1985 Eden saw temperatures fall well below zero a couple of nights, and highs only reached the mid-teens during the day. This is also when I recorded the lowest temperature in Eden since I first began keeping records in 1981. I had a morning low of -11° on the 21st and -6° on the 22nd.

I was much younger and foolish back then, and my friends and I walked across the Smith River during that cold spell. The pictures below were taken on January 23, 1985 and are of me standing in the middle of the river and my friend Robert as he was walking across.

That was an epic cold spell. I lived in Virginia Beach and we dropped to -4. It was the coldest ever recorded there. Record still holds I believe.
