Have had SN- to SN the past  hour here in NW Philly and it has dusted all but treated surfaces, thanks to a temp of 13 and dp 6.

Solid coating here with mod snow. Got up at 415 and it had already started so not sure how much virga there was to start. Most 6 hr precip panels i saw had me start at/after 7, so Im considering this a bonus and a good omen. Just heard some distant plowing too, oddly. Asphalt driveway has caved but cant imagine there’s anything worth plowing anywhere yet. Maybe just testing things out.

SUMMARY...Heavy snowfall, with rates of around 1 inch per hour, is expected to continue to develop from parts of the upper Ohio Valley eastward to the Mid-Atlantic this morning.

DISCUSSION...The latest mosaic radar imagery shows widespread snowfall ongoing from the Ohio Valley eastward into the Mid-Atlantic. This is occurring along a broad zone of strong isentropic ascent, aided by warm advection associated with a 50 to 60 knot low-level speed max over the southern Appalachians. The exit region of this feature will continue to move northward this morning into the upper Ohio Valley and northern Mid-Atlantic, helping to gradually intensify snowfall rates. This will result in areas of heavy snow from Pennsylvania and northern Virginia eastward to New Jersey and far southeastern New York. Snowfall rates of 1 inch per hour will be possible within the more well-defined bands that setup. The heavy snowfall potential from Pennsylvania and New Jersey northward should continue through the mid to late morning. In northern Virginia, Maryland and Delaware, a changeover to freezing rain is expected by late morning.

11z mesoanalysis has the 700 0°C line down in southern VA right now. Problem is the warm nose looks like it's between 850 and 700mb and we don't have a map for those layers. Regardless, just based on early reports, I like the NWS nudging amounts up slightly for the LHV. I think ratios and rates will get y'all to your expected ranges and potentially above in some spots.

Took about 2.5 hours for an unofficial 1” (I don't own a snowboard..yet…). Safe to say rates have increased now

 

eta: flake size remains on the smaller, finer side, but larger than pixie dust

Seems like ages since I got to see a solid warning criteria snowfall mostly falling in daylight, but here it comes.  Intensity picking up in National Park NJ, looks like we are past an inch now.
