OMG this thread has gone down memory lane.  Don Polec was like the Weird Al of local TV news and was always hilarious to watch. 

Fun fact but KYW's (channel 3 was NBC back then) Trudy Haynes originally reported the weather on WXYZ-TV in Detroit back in the early '60s before she came here to Philly in the mid-'60s as a beat reporter - 

 

 

 

She just passed away a couple years ago at age 95.

Pretty much my/my parents line up but I was able to watch the entire Carol Burnett show if I was able to stay awake. Tim. Conway, Harvey McCormick, Vicki Lawrence etc

Your idea of snowfall is different from mine. Snow that doesn't stick to blacktop I do not count. It's unproductive snow. And when it snowed back then streets stayed covered for several days if not a week plus. I would sled down a hill in front of my house on the street for several days after a storm. Now with brine and them salting the shit out of everything streets are pretty much black by the next day. In addition tons of private contractors plowing everything. Also back then I was 4 ft so everything seemed deep. Now 6 ft+ not so much. You can pull up all the graphs you like but winters were better in the past.

My dad used to say the same things to me about the 1940's and 1950's growing up in Philly. Then I showed him the data. We all believe it was snowier and colder when we were kids. This is why we have facts to keep it real...not discounting memories. I have mentioned this before but from 1967 to 1978 Philly had no significant snows over 6" at all! Imagine if that occurred today the kids who grew up in our snowy climate since 2000 would be crying daily....kind of like they are now. LOL!!

Following the arctic front passage temps have continued to slowly drop since sunrise across the area. Temperatures do not look to rise much today and remain in the upper 20's. Tonight will be the coldest night so far this season with lows not far from 10 degrees above zero. Some local station record lows will be broken including East Nantmeal record low was 17.7 back in 2010. We warm to near normal on Wednesday (this may be the last normal high temperature through Christmas) We should also see some snow arrive that will change pretty quickly to rain. We fall back below normal for the rest of the work week with additional snow chances arriving on Friday night into Saturday morning.

Currently we only had two since 2018 of 6 inches or more so we're not exactly setting records. We also had that long-ass snow drought mixed in there...

The cold really caught me off guard this morning after it was pretty pleasant yesterday afternoon. Wind chill of 12 on a cloudy day is pretty brutal.

Also on the topic of recent winter snowfall performances, 2020-2021 was well above average for a lot of people in this thread. I lived in Conshy at the time and we had 4' but I think the cutoff was pretty sharp from NW to SE

Yeah, those north and west got the snow in 2020-21. The sharp cutoff south and east showed the warmer storm tracks that season. However, in many of the areas south and east that had below normal snowfall in 2020-21, they did better in 2021-22, when many of the storm tracks were colder and closer to the coast in January 2022.

At East Nantmeal today will be our 2nd below freezing day of the season and this morning was our 16th sub-freezing low. Below are the average number of each type of day at all of the Chester County Area Climate Locations. You may notice lower elevation spots in general experience more freezing lows while the relatively higher spots see more afternoon highs with below freezing temperatures.

Below is the latest GFS model which paints an almost ideal view of what a classic White Christmas would look like. Below is the total snow between this weekend and Christmas Eve morning at 7am. That model has a morning temperature of 18 degrees with between 10" to 14" of model snow we will never have to shovel.

If it's a clipper, you can forget about it. The last time a clipper panned out in this area was on January 22, 2005, and that was over 20 years ago now.

You can tell things have slowed down with my business as we near the holidays....plenty of time for some updated analysis!

Below are the Top 10 snowstorms since January 1, 2020 here in East Nantmeal Township. We have had 5 storms greater than 6 inches but only 2 storms that have exceeded 10" or more.

That’s all I’ve ever wanted, a Christmas Eve storm right out of “It’s a Wonderful Life”.

Snow starts around 3-4pm in the afternoon, rips fatties all night long and winds down Christmas morning just as I’m opening up what Santa left me. Sigh!

I’m resigned to the fact it will probably never happen as long as I’m living in southeast PA. Hence my plans to retire to a colder climate.

A few years ago, I *finally* sat down and watched "White Christmas" with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye and the running theme was that when the pair fled Miami by train with a pair of performing sisters to go help out a former WW2 C.O. with his ski lodge in Vermont, when they arrived, they thought they got off at the wrong stop - guessing North Carolina - because there was no snow!  And it was just a few weeks before Christmas.  The money shot scene was when Bing's character saunters up to the lodge's hotel clerk and asked "What did you do with the snow?" and the response "Oh we take it in for the night".  The movie released in 1954.

I have my snowfall obs from MBY going back to around when I joined Eastern Wx in 2006/2007, and through when they changed to the current American Wx, and there were 4 IMBY (and 5 if you count 2018 - 2019) -

Snow/sleetfall 2024 - 2025 season = 12.56" | Snow/sleetfall 2023 - 2024 season = 14.04" | Snow/sleetfall 2022 - 2023 season = 1.20" | Snow/sleetfall 2021 - 2022 season = 15.62"  | Snow/sleetfall 2020 - 2021 season = 31.31" | Snow/sleetfall 2019 - 2020 season = 2.47" | Snow/sleetfall 2018 - 2019 season = 19.26"

I used to watch Emergency!  And I did used to religiously watch the Carol Burnett show and even remember seeing that famous "Went with the Wind" skit when it first aired.  One show that only aired a season back then, was "The Magician" with Bill Bixby (was a fan of his).  And of course stuff like "Welcome Back Kotter" and a bunch of the CBS shows like "All in the Family", etc. 

And every Labor Day, I used to try to stay up late to watch the various acts on the Jerry Lewis telethon.

Those were the days.

I actually hit my "high" for the day of 35 around 3:30 am this morning. Had been up and could tell from my weather station console, when the arctic front came through, and where the dewpoint crashed to as low as "0F" sometime today.

My 2020 - 2021 seasonal was 31", and that was probably from a series of storms (all the threads are still here for those storms by the way).

Am currently at my "low" for the day of 25 with dp a somewhat better "1.9F".
