I'm pretty such a boatload of summers since 2010 were are a lot worse in terms of intensity and duration than any older summers.

That can be easily disputed in terms of the numbers of people who died in those summers AND in terms of extreme heat (duration of heatwaves and number of 100 degree temperatures.)  Those are the only metrics I care about.  Since 2011 this is the first summer that has matched the intensity of those older summers (even though the length of heatwaves has now become much shorter.) 3-4 day heatwaves really do not stand up to heatwaves of 7 days or longer (which is why they are called super heatwaves.)

You clearly were not alive for summers like 1983 or 1993 or you would never make such a statement.

Are you on a mission to get to 100,000 posts….by this Labor Day?

I read somewhere that .001% of the Earth's rise in temperature over the last 9 years is directly attributable to server electricity demands, due to the frequency of LibertyBell's posts. Half that is due solely to the giant image and poem in his footer that have been in place only the past year or so.

Just kidding, I honestly enjoy the posts (the ducks I'm a little tired of tho.)

It's not his posts, and thankfully he gets it when I call him on stuff and bust his chops. I just wish whatever browser he uses allowed use of the multi-quote option.

I consider you a friend, Rob so thank you :-) I'll try to use multiquote more often, it does work sometimes, but it limits me to two quotes per post from what I can tell.

I'm using the DuckDuckGo browser.

Changed it to a cooler blue theme, it's actually from April 2002 during the historic heatwave, you wouldn't think the skies would be this blue but they were, a function of it being April, despite the intense heat.

1953, 1966 and 1983 analogs on tap, let's see which one comes the closest to matching this historic summer !!!!

For winter, everyone should want a 1966 match.....

I know about the other historic summers but what late hot streak did we have in 1973? Thats my birth year lol

it's been completely sunny and hot here for an hour now, going to turn on my a/c soon.

It's interesting how we do not have late season intense heat anymore (at least to my knowledge)-- we did have 95 in October here a few years ago (at JFK).  But our latest 98 in recent memory was in September 2010 and our latest 99 was on September 11, 1983 wasn't it?

Our latest 100 goes all the way back to September 7, 1881 (actually 101.) It was NYC's first 100 ever recorded and also its latest.

Some of Richmond's hottest summers were also ours, fascinating how this kind of intense early heat was a harbinger of things to come in many of these historic summers....

Records:

Highs:

EWR: 99 (2021)
NYC: 96 (1991)
LGA: 96 (2021)
JFK: 98 (2010)

2010: The maximum temperature today at the Richmond International Airport was 102 °F which not only broke the record high temperature for the date, but was close to the 104 °F record maximum for the month of June. Both June 27th and 28th had a maximum temperature 102 °F. Richmond has never had back to back 100 °F plus days before in June.  Only three June days have been hotter: (June 30, 1937 103 °F) (June 19, 1944 103 °F) (June 26, 1952 104 °F ) June 2010 also had 19 days of 90 °F or hotter temperatures the record was 20 in 1943. The Richmond International Airport reported the mean temperature for June was 81.1 °F which was a new 113 year record. This breaks the old record of 79.2 °F set in 1943 and was a +8.7 °F departure from average. June had 8 new daily temperature records and all were for heat.  (Ref. Richmond Weather Records - KRIC)

2010: Richmond, Virginia, set record for the most days in June reaching 102 degrees F (June 24, 27, and 28). (Ref. Weatherwise U.S. Weather Highlights of 2010 page 8 )

also looks like the extensive heat of 1980 started in Texas around this time before moving north and east.

1980 - The temperature at Wichita Falls, TX, soared to 117 degrees, their hottest reading of record. Daily highs were 110 degrees or above between the 24th of June and the 3rd of July. (The Weather Channel)

Didn't 1966 have multiple 100+ degree heatwaves in quick succession? Based on the records, I counted three of them in less than 4 weeks.

I grew up near Prospect Park, and spent my weekends playing frisbee in there growing up :-)

it might as well hit 100, there is no perceptible difference between 98, 99, 100....

There is no perceptible difference between 98, 99 and 100 degrees.  So if it's going to be 98-99 it might as well be 100.  105+ etc isn't necessary.

Indeed- that's why I cherished getting over 40C/104F on the 24th lol.

The other thing I like is how C and F are the same at -40 !!!!

That was one of our last really great summers, the heat in 1999 almost matched 1953 in terms of longevity, truly a summer to treasure. I was disappointed that JFK only reached 100+ once (102 on the 5th), which is why I rank 2010 higher and completely unmatched (1966 had as many 100+ days but the heat didn't continue into August and September like it did in 2010.) However in terms of longevity of heatwaves 1999 is only exceeded by 1953. I don't believe it's a coincidence that we have an 11 year return period for the peak of extreme heat (1944, 1955, 1966, 1977, 1988, 1999, 2010.)

Of course if you want to feel cool, Chris, all you need to do is jump in the water ;)

Also isn't there a whole week at the end of July when NYC has never hit 100 (I think it's July 24-30).

More than 2 or 3 lol
