I'm pretty such a boatload of summers since 2010 were are a lot worse in terms of intensity and duration than any older summers.

it doesn't matter if they were *hotter* in terms of average temperatures, I'm looking for extreme temperatures of 100+ and 1953 and 1966 have not been matched for those (1993 did come close.)

That can be easily disputed in terms of the numbers of people who died in those summers AND in terms of extreme heat (duration of heatwaves and number of 100 degree temperatures.)  Those are the only metrics I care about.  Since 2011 this is the first summer that has matched the intensity of those older summers (even though the length of heatwaves has now become much shorter.) 3-4 day heatwaves really do not stand up to heatwaves of 7 days or longer (which is why they are called super heatwaves.)

You clearly were not alive for summers like 1983 or 1993 or you would never make such a statement.

I read somewhere that .001% of the Earth's rise in temperature over the last 9 years is directly attributable to server electricity demands, due to the frequency of LibertyBell's posts. Half that is due solely to the giant image and poem in his footer that have been in place only the past year or so.

Just kidding, I honestly enjoy the posts (the ducks I'm a little tired of tho.)

I consider you a friend, Rob so thank you :-) I'll try to use multiquote more often, it does work sometimes, but it limits me to two quotes per post from what I can tell.

I'm using the DuckDuckGo browser.

Changed it to a cooler blue theme, it's actually from April 2002 during the historic heatwave, you wouldn't think the skies would be this blue but they were, a function of it being April, despite the intense heat.

Our latest 100 goes all the way back to September 7, 1881 (actually 101.) It was NYC's first 100 ever recorded and also its latest.

also looks like the extensive heat of 1980 started in Texas around this time before moving north and east.

 

1980 - The temperature at Wichita Falls, TX, soared to 117 degrees, their hottest reading of record. Daily highs were 110 degrees or above between the 24th of June and the 3rd of July. (The Weather Channel)

That was one of our last really great summers, the heat in 1999 almost matched 1953 in terms of longevity, truly a summer to treasure. I was disappointed that JFK only reached 100+ once (102 on the 5th), which is why I rank 2010 higher and completely unmatched (1966 had as many 100+ days but the heat didn't continue into August and September like it did in 2010.) However in terms of longevity of heatwaves 1999 is only exceeded by 1953. I don't believe it's a coincidence that we have an 11 year return period for the peak of extreme heat (1944, 1955, 1966, 1977, 1988, 1999, 2010.)
