I guess I missed my shot at the big time, oh well. 1

Tis the season. Good morning Rob/BSL. As you can see, in anticipation, I’ve installed a snow gauge. I’ve cleared a small patch of bare ground boarded by a century old clothesline pole and surrounded by the last oak leaf drifts of fall. The gauge will report what the postage stamp receives in my UHI blessed, ocean loving, coastal plain, urban location. Many may say that a 6 or 12 inch gauge, at most, would suffice for my location. My purchase of a 36 inch gauge, accurately labeled as optimism wrapped in insanity, was actually done with fore thought. Bigger than 6 inches is always better. Thank you and all my kind and patient friends in the NW & NE Burbs. As always ….

CPcantmeasuresnow
Entering day 11 of continuous snow cover, although we're about at 80% coverage now. Pretty amazing from 2.8 inches of sow through the period. Hopefully the bare spots get covered up with another 2-3 inches tonight. Two would be great from this setup, 3 would be a pleasant surprise. To those out there that keep track. When do you call the snow cover done? I use at least a one inch cover over 75% of visible land area, sun and shade. Right now I'm 2-2.5 inch in shady spots, one inch in most sunny areas with about 20% bare ground.

For me I found a spot in the yard for my snow stake that is out from under the trees and is a good indicator of when I get down to 50% coverage or less. So when there’s nothing at my stake I just call it patchy snow cover. Case in point, 2.5” at the stake this morning but I have bare spots under trees.
NorthShoreWx Posted just now Share Posted just now I go with greater than 50% coverage >= 1", but that's highly subjective. Sometimes if it seems to meet that criteria but looks wrong, I'll call it a trace. Pretty sure I am a lot less restrictive than airports. Anyone else notice how fast they go to zero snow cover while all around them is still buried? I think as soon as a bare spot is visible, they call it a trace or something like that.
