Good discussion from CTP about the event tomorrow.

SHORT TERM /2 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING THROUGH 6 PM WEDNESDAY/...
Increasing warm advection ahead of a warm front in the Ohio
Valley should spread increasing/thickening clouds into the
region later tonight/early Wed. A several hour period of light
freezing rain and sleet appears likely late tonight and Wed
morning, as isentropic ascent at the nose of low level jet
lifts through the region.

The strongest frontogenetic forcing and highest POPs are
painted over the northwest half of the forecast area. Model
soundings indicate low levels will remain cold enough for any
light precipitation to fall mainly as freezing rain, with a bit
of sleet or snow possible at the onset over the northeastern
part of the forecast area where the cold wedge will be deepest.
Ensemble mean qpf is around one tenth of an inch or less, but a
trace to 0.10 inch of ice could result in slippery travel for
the Wed AM commute.

A winter weather advisory has been issued for the western 2/3 of
our zones, where the QPF is highest and expected to fall while
sfc temperatures are still below freezing. The Lower Susq and
far eastern zones (Schuylkill and Columbia Co) are not included
in the advisory because at this time it appears precip will be
lighter and hold off until a couple hours after sunrise, at
which time sfc temps are more likely to be above freezing and a
glaze of ice is less likely.

How does this happen in todays world? We can do better to eliminate this. Snow squalls that caused 50-car pileup went undetected by weather radar almost 2 hours after crash  https://www.pennlive.com/news/2022/03/snow-squalls-that-caused-50-car-pileup-went-undetected-by-weather-radar-almost-2-hours-after-crash.html?utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook&utm_campaign=pennlive_sf&fbclid=IwAR317BxOM1FvBMVBC-WA8V8Djv1K19xXNsDJu1_M

Well this is a loaded one for sure.  You can blame a myriad of things...weather, society for the push push, radar...whatevs, but at the end of the day, the person behind the wheel takes much of it (I'm guilty as charged btw).

IMO with todays technology, with many vehicles having NAV/GPS, I'd think it'd be easy for all vehicles to require one, and when you are going through areas like this stretch which is notoriously dangerous, they could set speed restrictions between mile markers x and y....and when you pass through (just like turnpike toll booths), your car restricts to set speed parameters.  That was easy...

at the end of the day, I prefer it up to us, but I'd think something like above isnt too far fetched...

Pics that I saw were horrible and thoughts and prayers go out to all involved.

Yeah the radar hole, which is at its worst over the Lebanon/Schuylkill County areas and particularly bad for low-topped cloud events, is a real issue that everyone is aware of.  You have to rely on visible satellites, highway cams, on-the-ground reports, and the like.  Not ideal.  Eric Horst was tweeting about this after the event and mentioned the push to get another weather radar somewhere in the vicinity of MDT or MU; not sure if there is really anything to that but it would go a long way towards solving the problem.  It frustrates all of us.

For safety sake there should be another radar installed in that area

I guess the part that is a disconnect w/ radar being touted as the problem....is that bye and large, its mostly weather weenies like us that would be hyperfocused on a radar screen in search of snow.  Moreover, even if it existed, it might help fill small donut holes, but when CTP issued a snow squall warning and it pops on screen, that's really all they can do is heighten awareness.  It still falls on said individual to heed warning.  Most of us have seen the videos in the last couple days, and when its a white out like we saw....that falls on the driver to slow down.  Again, I've been guilty of it, so I'm not taking ANY high road here, but from what I saw, many of those folks were really cruisin along IMO.

Yea, do not listen to anyone who says otherwise.  It may snow again, it may not.  Anything outside 3-5 days is fantasy casting sometimes.  Just fun to follow the ups and downs of the models.

lol  noone here said that....

but keep adding up your 300 hr snow maps.
