May 2019 Observations

Recommended Posts

Was very fortunate to pick up a quick 0.09 inch of rainfall about a half hour ago. Widely scattered showers over this way. That may be the last rain we see for a week or more.

Caught another brief shower to bring the day's total to 0.25 inch. We were quite fortunate.

Had a heavy shower and even a rumble or two of thunder this morning right at dawn.....was first real measurable rain in 2 weeks probably and we probably got as much in that 20 min heavy shower as we have had the previous 25 days of the month.

Yesterday, Atlanta had a high temperature of 94°. That set a new daily record high figure. The old record was 93°, which was set in 1953 and tied in 1960. Atlanta remains solidly on track for its warmest May on record.

Mean Temperature (May 1-25): 74.7° (Tied for 2nd warmest with 1896 and 1996)

Estimated Final May 2019 Average: 76.0° (likely range: 75.5°-76.5°)

Implied probabilities: Record warm May: 86%; May mean temperature of 75.0° or above: 83%; May mean temperature of 76.0°: 50%.

Warmest May on Record: 74.8°, 1996 and 2018

Had a few sprinkles by that was it. Currently hazy, hot, humid, and very dry 92/76.

Almost 2pm and it's now 97/77. HI at 114. Yep time to start talking about the dreaded heat index once again.

Hate the heat, but HURRAY for some drier weather. After at least 18 months, my yard is finally starting to dry out a little and I may even be able to catch up with my mowing. Now if we can just cool it down to normal or a little below...

Had a high of 98 and even at 7pm it is still 92/78. I hate this so much, way too hot and dry. Cannot wait for this pattern to change.

That's very impressive. The 101° at Savannah tied the May record (May 30, 1898 and May 31, 1945). It was also the hottest there this early in the season. The 100° at Wilmington was also that city's hottest May temperature on record.

Atlanta high for today was set later this afternoon again today when it hit 95.  That breaks the old high of 94.

A couple hours ago NWS showed CAE as having reached 100 today, but it's since been revised to 99. So 100 each of the past two days with 99 today. Forecast for tomorrow is 101, which would tie their all-time May record.

I'm so glad that this May is so dry and warm. Last weekend my husband and I went to the Lake Guntersville beach. The water was not yet warm enough for bathing but the weather was nice and we spent a wonderful weekend near the lake.

We had a similar stretch in May last year and then the tables flipped to one of the wettest summers in quite a while followed by two canes.  This certainly looks like a different pattern this year but maybe an early tropical system can break things up a bit.  I can't do this until September.  Headed for 90 again today in the Triad.  89 and steamy now.

This type of heat is not that bad give me 95/61 any day versus 90/78......heat index is only hitting 100 in a few location in the state. Still sucks especially for May but if this is the worst the summer holds then meh......

I believe that is four days in a row with record highs in Atlanta. It’s been awfully hot.
