THey probably just aren't used to seeing the username "Noreaster" with more than "1-3"

I measured 16 inches of snow just west of JFK, sent it in but dont see it on the report yet.

In 1996 that blizzard in January was unprecedented, Schools Closed Monday AND Tuesday, with a delayed opening on Wednesday.

I know NYC schools will be open tomorrow, lateness and absentism might be high though, new sets of challenges for parking, etc. especially for staff living out of NYC and also because it's a Friday.

I'm just curious about that blob of moisture in the upper mid west.......and its relation to Friday and Saturday's weather.

Is this two systems?

We all know it's no 2-4 or 3-6.

But is this a dusting to an inch combined for Friday and Saturday or potentially 1-3?

Also When would it start ?

NOAA has Mostly cloudy tonight and 40% chances tomm through Saturday.

We probably get a batch and pick up a dusting tomorrow and then another round on saturday. Both will be light though I guess some places could overperform and squeeze out an inch.

Still in awe of this winter

3 biggest storms: 15", 14.5", 14"

Wow

I've had 13", 14.5", and 14" for my biggest storms this winter, and I'm generally fairly conservative measuring. I've never seen a progression of snowstorms of this nature with snowpack remaining on the ground; this is simply historic. I am in awe of the amount of heavy snow I've seen this winter.

Yup same here, I got 19.7" in Lower Westchester, and they refuse to put me up. Just because Upper Westchester and if you wanna call it Mid Westchester didn't cash in.. they don't believe me?

I believe you this time....extreme Southern Westchester just got hammered. Looking back on radar loops, you were clearly in the 30-35dbz when I was under 25-30dbz for much of the storm. My mom's school, Mount Vernon, closed...we only had delays up this way though I wasn't called in to sub anyway.

This is some of the most waterlogged snow I've had in a very long time. It looks quite pretty because it's still stuck to everything here.

Does anyone know what the liquid equivalents were for the snow around the Tri-state? Has to have been at least 1.5" or more.

I believe it was like 10.5:1 ratio so something like 1.8"

I think it's fair to look at KNYC's total of 1.70in and assume that area wide we were all around 1.25+ but city south and east was probably 1.5-1.75...had you guys been a little colder and not had as much sleet and freezing rain you would have easily ended up with over 18 maybe 20.

Wow, Mount Vernon closed? Bronxville had 2 hour delays that I saw, yet all the sidewalks and even the public parking lot for the train is still snowed in.

we ended up with 14.0 here in valhalla and the snowpack is off the charts in areas sheltered from the wind/sun. I posted this last night but since it snowed more since I posted, snow depth is as high as 25 inches in some areas(and to be honest its nearly impossible to break through the bottom layer of ice from melted and refrozen Dec 26th crap so it actually could be around 28in)...that matches up well with Nzuckers snow depth in the wooded areas. Also similar elevation around 400' up here.

correction: 360' according to this..

The 14.8 total from Westport CT has to be bogus. This isn't the first time that this spotter was too conservative with totals... not sure what the deal it

I have measured on average 16-17 inches in 5 different spots, All surrounding towns report a least 16.5-18 inches, including Norwalk right to our west with 18.

Maybe I should send in an email to Upton to tell that spotter to come back in for retraining!

Nice summary of liquid equivalents around the area:

http://forecast.weather.gov/product.php?site=NWS&issuedby=OKX&product=RTP&format=CI&version=1&glossary=0

Several stations in the immediate NYC metro area had about 2" liquid equivalent - Central Park, Harrison, NJ, EWR. Amounts decreased to 1-1.5" liquid across Suffolk County.

The fact that 3 stations reported EXACTLY 1.00" is a bit suspicious - sounds like there may have been some post-storm estimating.

The JFK estimate is clearly wrong, the radar was pretty similar for this storm in NYC as a whole.

lol so in the case of JFK they got the liquid equivalent and the snowfall amt wrong.

I could only imagine if that thunder sleet we had for 20 minutes had been snow. Those were some of the most ferocious pingers I can recall.

Agreed. Obs like these from JFK - 3 straight hours of 1/8 mi or less visibility - cast even more doubt

on their snowfall report. Their visibilities were lower than LGA and EWR for all three of these obs. Perhaps

the strong winds contributed to the relatively lower visibilities, but considering how wet the snow was I doubt it.

It literally sounded like glass was breaking! Maybe 2 inches of snow in 20 min lol if it had been all snow.

Wow, 23 inch snowdepth at Central Park. Don't see that every day.
