The report implies at least spots of EF5 damage through that entire F5 band on the google map created by the Springfield office, which was much-discussed in this thread. While I agree with Josh that likely there wasn't that large a region of solid EF5 damage as literally depicted on the map (probably hard for them to acutally separate out the EF4 damage from the EF5 damage), it's still an incredible/unbelievable tornado that would cause consistently found instances of EF5 damage along such a long stretch. That's in contrast to the more usual scenario where like 5 houses receiving F5 damage can be isolated to a particular neighborhood. -

ok, thanks Josh. I didn't read back through much of the thread, but I thought it might be something like this. It would be nice to get clarification from the NWS on this topic since the numbers are being thrown around in the media. Part of my job is to determine the worse case meteorological conditions possible at given sites around the country. Having wind speeds approaching 250 mph would be a special case for sure. -

JoMo, I agree with Josh that this is going to be the weather event of the century where most other catastrophes will be measured or compared with. It is still, after a week, still so distubing to see the devastation or worse to hear the horrible details JoMo has told us about the deaths of these people. Even though we love to experience or learn from weather disasters I think for me, it has made me think twice about why I am so fascinated with the power of Mother Nature and the desire to experience some of these events. I don't think I feel the same way anymore. This event is all too devastating and really an unimaginable disaster to have actually lived through. I know there will be more disasters in the future, but the human toll this event has inflicted upon so many people has changed the way I think. Oh I will still be fascinated but not so interested in actually experiencing them anymore. This event was really Hell on Earth for these people. My prayers are with you all in Joplin. -

Actually I think I saw a study of this tornado where there were more than five homes getting f5 ratings in that subdivision, and some of them were not adjacent.. ..anyway I just hate it when maps have ambiguities..(I was a Urban and Economic Geography major in college)..it just pisses me off to no end. *I do get what you are saying though Josh...I was shocked to see that swath of ef5 and it does seem to be almost incredible. Not what I expected at all. I expected the 'spotty' thing as well, hot a solid 2-3 block swath(isotach) for 3.5 plus miles. -

I just took another look at the Springfield WSO site. They have the obvious link to the survey for the tornado. If one looks off to the side, there is a menu item to "view a larger map". If one opens that up and further enlarges the image, it becomes quite obvious that the authors wanted to depict a large and significant continuous zone of F-5 forces. This is a rare and extreme catastrophe in the center of a small to mid-side city. Josh, if you look at the side menu for google maps, you will note that kilometers 4 through 7 all experienced winds > 200 moh. I know you want more exact wind speeds but it is up to the WSO to release that info. -

Hi Josh How have you been? Long time no talk.... Just been watching the footage of the tornado on the news over here. How bloody terrifying! We get nervous about cyclones but to be honest after seeing how huge it was and how much damage it created in such a short amount of time I'd rather be in a cyclone than a tornado any day. Can't believe that they only had 20mins notice - that doesn't give much time to do anything does it? Hope there are no more tornados like this one....very, very sad for this community. -

Everything that I thought I knew about violent tornadoes and death tolls has gone out the window this spring. It's been a long time since we've seen these kinds of death tolls, and I (like many others I imagine) was lulled into this idea that we wouldn't see this again. I've heard various sentiments in the past few weeks to the effect of "if you get a violent tornado going through a densely populated area, deaths are inevitable". While that may have some truth to it, I cannot help but feel that this is an insufficient answer. Like you Josh, I'm wondering how this happened, given how many violent tornadoes have rolled through significant population centers in the past few decades. Why weren't the Moore-OKC (1999) or Pleasant Grove (1998) tornadoes more deadly, for example? -

Well to be fair, if people knew that a major tornado was virtually guaranteed to hit their neighborhood at some point, then I think they would have a different opinion about it. I really do not think that was a fair comparison-a very likely event (a moderate to major earthquake threat that is almost a guarantee(not if just when) vs. a very unlikely event to happen at all(any given particular neighborhood in Alabama or Ohio or Missouri being hit by a violent tornado-not likely to happen at all). Maybe a better analogy with earthquakes would be flooding and flood measures or flood insurance? Apples to apples and oranges to oranges, Josh! -
Anytime I'm added to a Josh list makes me smile. Quiet in PR doesn't mean I'm not reading. There will be times I'll join if the topic is right.

I hit 25F last night, Josh posted in off topic that Marcus will turn the forum back on as read only for a while. The bigger issue is the loss of all that weather data, hopefully he'll let the DB be copied over here for historical purposes. It would be great and needless loss if it’s thrown in to the bit bucket
