  1. That's about an inch more than we got. Same today. Watched storms spiraling down from CT and hitting a wall over the sound. Then when we decided it was safe to have dinner outside, it rained on us lightly (but enough to get us wet) for 10 minutes while we had blue sky overhead. If I had a tenth of an inch of rain for everytime I heard thunder the past couple of weeks we'd have drowned, but instead we've a trace to show for it. Sometimes you're a Louisville slugger, sometimes you're the ball.
  2. I'm beginning to think it will never rain again here. We heard thunder, there are reports of flooding in Smithtown (and a flood advisory), but I'm about 2 miles north of Main Street and we literally did not get a single drop of rain from that cell. At least the temperature went from 84 to 78, so that's something.
  3. April was wet enough here (5.03"), but May (2.40") and June (0.92" so far) have been dry. The last rainfall was June 12 (0.16"). The other 3/4 inch that fell this month was spread over a 4-day period from 6/4 - 6/7.
  4. How does Euro look for the Adirondacks on Saturday?
  5. On a clear day you can just make out the ocean looking south down the trail, especially in winter. I've read that in the past you could also see the sound, but the trees have obstructed that view since.
  6. 39 here at 3AM. Upton is down to 31. I had to look.
  7. Hail here just before 5PM. Second time this spring. It actually started to cover the ground.
  8. Watching that heavier squall well to the west and just noticed that there are stray flurries already flying here now. Temp is 45. Low this am was 33.8.
  9. It's been groundhog day since March. Basically, we're still in March.
  10. First snowflakes here at 12:47. Its still 41, but that's down 2 in the past 15 minutes.
  11. Got it. We had the hail here on the 21st too. I said 22nd, but meant the 21st (since updated in post). I haven't observed any May snow in the 25 years we've been at this location (although I might have missed some in 2013), but what I was a little excited for a couple of days ago was the slight chance of light measurable. That isn't looking good at all. If you can't waste time talking about May snow during a quarantine, when can you?
  12. Thnaks for confirming! Too bad that track meet wasn't a day later. I'll never know if it snowed here (Smithtown) on 5/25
  13. Speaking of late snow, May 25, 2013 (Saturday of Memorial Day weekend) was darned close and I suspect parts of the area did have snowflakes mixed in. The high temp at ISP that day was 49 with about 3/4" rain and strong NE winds. I took my son to a track meet at Randalls Island and it was a miserable day (but we did get to see Usain Bolt in his prime). It was windy, rainy and cold and at one point I thought I might be seeing some white rain in the mix. Maybe I imagined it. Meanwhile, upstate this was going on: https://www.mynbc5.com/article/whiteface-mountain-gets-three-feet-of-snow/3309477 The Catskills got snow that day too. I think something similar might have happend around Memorial Day 1967.
  14. I can't speak for JFK, but it definitely snowed here on 4/23 between about 10 and 10:30 AM. We had pea-sized hail on the 21st. I have some video for 4/23, but also used the snowfall as an excuse for this post on my business IG (which features an unrelated May snow photo):
  15. I recall frost on the cartops around May 20 -22 sometime in the late 80s or 90s, but it didn't seem to damage any vegetation at the time. I wouldn't use that as a reason to wait the extra 2 weeks.
  16. Ditto. Maybe 97 for me on ne.weather. Hard to remember for certain as I wasn't even born yet.
  17. Here are the coldest May days at my location since 1996. We've hit 32 in May twice (5/1/2008, 5/14/1996). Sub 40 has been rare since 2008 but was common before 2008. 2019 42 5/13+ 2018 43 5/1 2017 40 5/4 2016 41 5/9 2015 39 5/3+ 2014 42 5/3 2013 40 5/15+ 2012 43 5/12 2011 42 5/6 2010 41 5/10 2009 40 5/19 2008 32 5/1, 39 5/20 2007 38 5/8+ 2006 41 5/24 2005 36 5/4+ 2004 37 5/5 2003 36 5/5 2002 36 51, 38 5/22 2001 37 5/8+ 2000 36 5/1 1999 39 5/15+ 1998 35 5/14 1997 37 5/8 1996 32 5/14 + also occured earlier in the month
  18. When I was a kid the guidance was always to put the sensitive plants out after May 15. Even though things have warmed since then and a lot of years you can get away with planting the tomatoes early, it seems that May 15 is still the date if you want a high degree of confidence.
  19. 1 wet flake reaching the ground is a trace. It's anything more than nothing but less than measureable (i.e., a tenth of an inch is measureable). I observed a trace at my location yesterday. It snowed lightly for about 30 minutes but melted on contact with the ground.
  20. For the statisticians in this group, when was the last time the warmest temperature in January was warmer than the warmest temperature in April? There's a good shot at it for both NYC and ISP.
  21. May 9, 1977 was not just a stray flake that some were lucky enough to notice. Durng the mid afternoon a cold rain turned to a heavy wet snow for a while on LI with temps in the mid 30's. It did not accumulate (although a haze of slush did start in some spots) but it was more than just a formality.
  22. Just had a brief but moderate shower of sleet here at 44 degrees.
