  1. Cool. I never saw the LSR before because we had no power for a couple of days. Two of those storm reports are from within a block or two of here. It was quite a scary wakeup alarm. It sounded like rocks being blasted at the house which I took to be hail, but some of it was branches blown out of trees.
  2. 31 here this morning up on the ridge in north Smithtown. We've been as low as 29.8 this fall but it wasn't for long enough to kill much.
  3. Extensive damage on the north shore in August 2015 too. Insane storm (including hail) at 5AM. I forget if it was a microburst or a full blown Derecho. It affected a considerable area.
  4. Appropriate that you mentioned Elko as the example because I was thinking high desert as I was posting.
  5. Impressive diurnal swings for sure. Must be even more impressive in the center of the island, but here's the last 3 days at my hacienda about a mile from the sound: 11/7 43 76 11/8 44 77 11/9 42 77 This afternoon's 77 degree high a couple of hours ago is already down to 59 here. You can be sweating and then a half hour later around sunset be freezing.
  6. We can alway reminisce: WEATHER MAP DISCUSSION FOR EXTREME SOUTHEASTERN NEW YORK..NORTHERN NEW JERSEY AND LONG ISLAND NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NEW YORK NY 400 AM EST WED NOV 22 1989 ...FIRST REAL SNOW EVENT ON THE WAY... HIGH PRESSURE MOVING ACROSS THE AREA WILL GIVE US FAIR SKIES FOR A SHORT PERIOD AND QUICKLY MOVE OUT TO SEA. THIS WILL BEGIN THE CHANGE IN OUR WEATHER PATTERN AS CLOUDS MOVE INTO THE AREA DURING THE AFTERNOON. A LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM DEVELOPING OVER THE GULF STATES WILL BE THE DRIVING FORCE TURNING A SOMEWHAT TAMED WEATHER PATTERN INTO A RAGING EVENT LET LOOSE. THE STORM CENTER WILL MOVE RAPIDLY TOWARD THE NORTHEAST AND SPREAD MOSTLY SNOW AHEAD OF IT. THEREFORE THIS WILL GIVE US OUR FIRST REAL SNOW EVENT THIS SEASON. THE SNOW SHOULD BEGIN AROUND MIDNIGHT AND CONTINUE THROUGH THE MORNING HOURS BEFORE TAPERING OFF TO FLURRIES DURING THURSDAY AFTERNOON. THE STORM WILL REACH THE CAROLINA COAST EARLY THURSDAY POSSIBLY DUMPING 2 TO 4 INCHES OF SNOW OVER MANY AREAS BEFORE RUSHING TOWARD THE NEW ENGLAND COAST. HOPEFULLY THIS SYSTEM WILL MOVE AS RAPIDLY AS PROJECTIONS CALL FOR..OTHERWISE IT MAY TURN INTO A MAJOR EVENT. IT WILL REMAIN CLOUDY AND COLD THANKSGIVING DAY BUT TIS THE SEASON TO BE THmANKFUL. MJW
  7. Snow in October, winter is over. It just takes a flake. This applies to the entire sub-forum except the north shore.
  8. Doesn't sound like an apple's to apples comparison. Depends on the kind of trees. Near here, trees along RT 25 in Caleb Smith and 25a north of the bull are past peak and shedding leaves. Where there are primarily oaks still lots of green. I just got home from the North Conway area and it was surprisingly similar in places. As you head up the notches it looks more winter like. This is from Bear Notch Road near Bartlett on Thursday.
  9. I just saw a great shooting star to the west heading roughly from south to north. I wouldn't call it a fireball, but like someone threw a sparkler close by. Definitely one of the better ones. Anyone else catch it?
  10. Seabreeze front showed up really well on satelite and radar, but it is a seabreeze without any gumption. Pretty solid and rather darkish Cu overcast and temp dropped from 94 to 88, but I suspect we'll see mid 90s again when the sun comes back out. Looks like northern Nassau is sizzling all day in the sun. Even the south shore down to the beaches is still high 80s except for right on the beach in parts of the south fork where it is around 80, but there are still 90s away from the beach there too. It only looks like a seabreeze. Anyone notice that MCS about 300 miles south of MTP? Wicked outflow boundary on the south side of it while the exhaust blows off to the north. Looks awesome on sat.
  11. At one point about 75 - 90 minutes ago we were surrounded in all 4 cardinal directions by these otherworldly black towers (except the one to the east which was well lit). it looked like the view from a hurricane hunter in the eye of a cat 5. Continuous thunder since that time but we are still waiting for a drop of rain. The dome is intact. This is actually fascinating. I regret being outside looking up without my camera.
  12. 0.02" total here since June 11 (split between 2 different days...basically sprinkles). None yesterday. Seeing some cirrus blowoff from various storms elsewhere all morning and some forming towers to the south, but nice deep blue skies overhead. The ground is pretty crunchy around here.
  13. That's about an inch more than we got. Same today. Watched storms spiraling down from CT and hitting a wall over the sound. Then when we decided it was safe to have dinner outside, it rained on us lightly (but enough to get us wet) for 10 minutes while we had blue sky overhead. If I had a tenth of an inch of rain for everytime I heard thunder the past couple of weeks we'd have drowned, but instead we've a trace to show for it. Sometimes you're a Louisville slugger, sometimes you're the ball.
  14. I'm beginning to think it will never rain again here. We heard thunder, there are reports of flooding in Smithtown (and a flood advisory), but I'm about 2 miles north of Main Street and we literally did not get a single drop of rain from that cell. At least the temperature went from 84 to 78, so that's something.
  15. April was wet enough here (5.03"), but May (2.40") and June (0.92" so far) have been dry. The last rainfall was June 12 (0.16"). The other 3/4 inch that fell this month was spread over a 4-day period from 6/4 - 6/7.
  16. How does Euro look for the Adirondacks on Saturday?
  17. On a clear day you can just make out the ocean looking south down the trail, especially in winter. I've read that in the past you could also see the sound, but the trees have obstructed that view since.
  18. 39 here at 3AM. Upton is down to 31. I had to look.
  19. Hail here just before 5PM. Second time this spring. It actually started to cover the ground.
  20. Watching that heavier squall well to the west and just noticed that there are stray flurries already flying here now. Temp is 45. Low this am was 33.8.
  21. It's been groundhog day since March. Basically, we're still in March.
  22. First snowflakes here at 12:47. Its still 41, but that's down 2 in the past 15 minutes.
