  1. Got to 87° here yesterday. Hovered between 85 and 87 for a solid 90 minutes before falling off starting around 3 pm. It was down to 70 by sunset. Up to 75 now after overnight low of 57.
  2. 2007 wasn't a heatwave, but it was a pretty warm run for early October. Just missed 6 (arguably 7) consecutive 80° days. Very warm nights too. This is from Central Park: Day Max Min Rain 2007 10 01 69 59 0 2007 10 02 75 58 0 2007 10 03 78 65 0.03 2007 10 04 84 69 0 2007 10 05 83 67 0 2007 10 06 83 66 0 2007 10 07 82 67 0 2007 10 08 87 67 0 2007 10 09 79 60 0.52
  3. September 30 max here was 77° (76.6°). Unusual spread with temps south of the LIE (must have been the wind off the sound). ISP is less than 10 miles southeast of here. The most recent temperatures in the 80s were on 9/26 and 9/28 (both 83°) September rainfall here was 3.23" Warmest for the month was 84° on the 9/6 and again on the 9/19. September temperatures on the whole were similar to the last 2 weeks of August Coolest was 49° on September 22.
  4. I meant how fast it decreases at airports after it is initially reported.
  5. 12.7" @cp. I think EWR was the big winner of the NYC area airports, but don't recall their total
  6. I said "snow depth" That mystery hasn't changed. FWIW those daily snowfall totals from ISP in 1979 look reasonable. Here is Syosset comparison for the same period: Syosset ISP 1979 F E B F E B Day 6 0.0 0.0 7 6.3 6.5 8 T 0.3 9 0.0 0.0 10 0.0 0.0 11 0.0 0.0 12 1.5 0.9 13 T T 14 0.0 0.0 15 1.0 T 16 0.2 0.2 17 0.0 0.0 18 0.0 0.0 19 10.1 8.8
  7. I have never been able to unravel the mystery of airport snow-depth reporting.
  8. 0.13" rainfall from yesterday's event. 2.68" total so far for September. It's been a month since we used a/c, although September has been nice but not really that chilly. Lowest temp has been 51° on 9/9. We've had one day with maxT in the 60's (65 on 9/7). August had 1 such day (68° on 8/20), July had none (closest was 79° on the 10th and 27th), and June had 5. The last sub-50° day was 49° on June 3 (following 47° on June 2). Max Temperatures have been more impressive, although this year's "heat waves" (subjectively) didn't seem to last long. Hottest days were: June 24 - 101° (100.8°, hottest June day I have seen) July 29 - 98° June 25 - 97° July 30 - 96° July 25 - 95° August touched 90 only once (90.0° on 8/11. 8/13 came close at 89.6°). If you want to call 8/13 90° and add a day to the total, I won't argue. We've had 16 90° days this year: May - 0 June - 6 July - 9 August - 1 September - 0 Lest these stats imply a cool summer, through August 17 there were also 12 days with a max of 88° or 89°. We haven't come close to those high temperatures since 8/17 and the past month has been rather nice. Another 6 weeks of neither needing to use air conditioning nor heating to maintain a good temperature inside the house would be nice. Location: north Smithtown, NY
  9. 2 day rain total here was 1.83". Today's maxT was 64.9⁰.
  10. I'll buy that. It got my attention because its a super thin line on the visible satellite and has barely moved since sunrise, although the apparent source has shifted east by a few miles. Drizzle is better.
  11. Is there a ship on fire off the central-southern NJ coast? Both radar and sat showing a consistent plume of smoke. https://weather.cod.edu/satrad/?parms=local-New_Jersey-02-24-0-100-1&checked=map&colorbar=undefined https://weather.cod.edu/satrad/nexrad/index.php?parms=OKX-N0Q-1-12-100-usa-rad
  12. Isolated shower on the north shore just dropped a half inch of rain here in 10 minutes. Reminiscent of a year ago but that lasted 3 hours.
  13. As of 12:30am here, 0.28" of rain since midnight with temp down to 64.6⁰. Still raining moderately for a little bit of redemption with the 24 hour total about 3/4" (much more 3 or 4 miles SE from here). Not done yet and the lawn isn't complaining.
  14. Newsday at the time had a graphic that showed 22" in Long Beach during the February 1978 blizzard. 14" at JFK could be wrong, but is not impossible.
  15. Twas chilly at the end of August. There was a repeat exactly 10 years later. August 1976 also had Hurricane Belle. Just saying.

  17. We got fringed by that cell just to our south and caught 0.28" in the bucket in 20 minutes before it drifted slightly east. Gonna be some serious flooding down around the Nesconset and Lake Grove area and spreading east. Radar estimates of 2" of rain in the past 30 minutes.
  18. I'm not sure what his side duties may have included, but he was responsible for the horses.
  19. Very sorry for your loss. Reading this made me sad, but also happy that there are people like your dad in the world.
  20. We have quite a bit of family history at Newport. If you visit the Mansions, my great grandfather was the coachman for the Kings at Kingscote for about a decade. He had the same name as me.
