shocking that this summer matched 1993- I used the AC so much more that year, it was my hottest summer up to that point. Don, odds that next summer NYC will have the kind of statistically anomalous summer that Phoenix had this summer?

Hey I'm a Gen Xer (but do identify more with Millenials)......maybe it's my/our Long Island/NY education that has us ahead of the field? You look at what the fossil fuel industry and how it controls the education system and political system in some parts of the country- and it's positively criminal (or should be.) F it, we knew about climate change even back in the 80s, and I remember writing a sci fi story back in the 1980s about saying good bye to Long Island as we boarded the last ship off the island as it went underwater and we were the last people left.

when you look at climate models and predicted sea level rise and compare it vs whats actually occurring, the actual sea level rise is near the more extreme scenarios....we've already had a 1 ft sea level rise and if we continue to stay near the values predicted by the more extreme scenarios we'll add 3 more feet to that by 2070 and up to 8 feet by 2100. Some areas are experiencing sea level rise quicker than others (most notably the US east coast and the gulf coast.) Sunny day flooding has become a reality here on the south shore of Long Island.....

I think the biggest proof is that anthropogenic climate change has occurred much faster than any "natural" climate change occurred in the past and the current mass extinction..... and here's something more philosophical and even more sobering..... Scientists are puzzled about why we haven't found any signs of life elsewhere in the universe (we should now be able to detect inadvertent signals sent out from technology). I have a scary thought that I've had for years but seems to be becoming more and more likely......what if technological life almost always goes down the same road....to destruction? Billions of possible earthlike planets out there and what if 99.999999999999% of them have the same sad outcome, technological evolution almost inevitably leading to self destruction? I see us heading down that way too, I have for years, but with even more certainty now. The Great Filter isn't behind us, it's staring us right in the face and if we are like most, we will suffer the same sad result. In the end that result may be for the best though, as the planet would almost certainly recover from we've been doing to it since the industrial age began.

I saw a WaPo article that mentioned 2012 and the record melt off that occurred that year and then mentioned Sandy and the anomalous track it took. Do you believe the two are connected, Don (research seems to be pointing this way with regards to strong blocking and arctic ice melt) and if so, do you think a similar melt off this year could result in another storm like that come October (when these kinds of storms are most likely to happen?)

seize the assets of the fossil fuel industry and move them to building architecture to combat sea level rise. once the fossil fuel industry is castrated, you wont see any more of this propaganda. We also need to go after PhRMA and big pharma in general for the propaganda they put out against universal healthcare. A lot of things need to change in this country.

the oceans comprise 70% of the planet and yes it matters if the most densely populated areas of the world have it, because it leads to different forms of pollution and hardship. Cutting down trees aint a good thing, particularly when they are needed as carbon sinks for the emissions.

it's good to see Exxon removed from the primary stock exchange, hopefully Chevron is next: We banned fracking here in NY after a year long scientific study showed how awful it is for the environment (methane leaks, earthquakes, etc.) hopefully the rest of the nation follows suit....it certainly seems that the fossil fuel industry controls certain parts of the country, or else it'd be banned there already. I heard that NJ recently joined 19 other states in suing the fossil fuel industry to pay them for architecture they need to develop to combat sea level rise which is already inundating our coastal areas. I think before this is all done, you'll see more than a few of these industry leaders going to prison for what they've done.....the closest analogy I can think of is either mafia or cartel, and remember that the notorious J Edgar Hoover himself stated that the mafia didn't exist in America....

Among the other provisions we do need to become much less reliant on meat (if compiled as a nation, animal farming is the third largest contributor of fossil fuels behind China and the US) and also for health reasons (lowering consumption of processed food- not sure if this is in the GND, but America has one of the worst BMI's, rates of diabetes, obesity, etc., which are also major pre-existing conditions for the pandemic.) in short, we need societal; and systemic level changes. Other nations have done this when they developed universal healthcare, we should be able to do it also. I see the UN has set global targets for all of the above, the problem with the UN is that it is run by a small number of very powerful nations who have their own agendas, and there is no true global level program to help the entire planet, independent of what nations it holds.
