They always hate on Queens lol. Do you know when they calculated the NESIS value of the Jan 2016 blizzard they ignored JFK's 31" total from that storm even though that total was confirmed on re-analysis? That storm would have pulled ahead of March 1960's NESIS value had JFK's measurement been taken into account.

1.5" seems to be quite widespread with this storm along the coast, with a high of 3.5" in some spots. For so much banding this storm was quite uniform for us.

what would it have taken for this two day storm to be all snow for us? Just a small track change or some major global indices shift to make the pattern more favorable?
-
oh wow, 63-64 must've been an amazing el nino winter! how much did we get in those two long duration storms? How much in the Dec `1959 storm?
-
Remember the Feb 08 SWFE? 6 inches of snow even here on the south shore!
-
Well, it made me wonder if extremely long duration storms have gotten more rare with time? At least for us, our big storms seem to be more of the quick hitting high snowfall rate variety. When was the last time we had a big two or three day storm? The only three day storms I can think of are Dec 1991, Mar 1962, Feb 1920 and Mar 1888. And none of those were all snow, although the earlier two were HECS with high amounts of snow mixed in.

it reminded me a bit of the post Xmas 2002 storm!

It's weird to get such a long event with no blocking! How can that happen? I was trying to remember all our 30 hour + events- did they all have blocking? The ones I can remember off the top of my head or read about- March 2018, Jan 2016, Feb 2010, Dec 2003, Feb 2003, March 2001, Jan 1996, Mar 1993, Dec 1992, Feb 1983, Feb 1978, Feb 1969, Mar 1962, Feb 1961, Dec 1960, Mar 1960, Mar 1958, Mar 1956, Dec 1947, Feb 1920, Feb 1899, Jan 1896, March 1888. There are others I'm probably forgetting.

It's very photogenic but looks like it's melting pretty quick, better take pics quick or it'll be gone before noon! The birds are having a field day too, I think they're playing in it and eating (drinking) it?

Being a few miles east of JFK and using the radar for confirmation, I can state that it was snowing pretty steadily from 8 PM last night to around 7 AM this morning.

Yes thanks thats the one! Seems like there are no photos from last night's storm from Central Park though

Indeed and they match mine also! Newark also did well. Let's try to forget the other local airports lol.

Yeah I'm only 3 miles or so east of JFK and I remember one time they reported a trace and the snow plows were out here. It was a 4 inch snowfall lol.

Thanks! Do they have METARs for Central Park too or is that only for airports? In case it's just for airports, do you have one for Islip too? Their last measurement was also at 1 am.

Thanks Chris, I wonder if there is a supercycle that influences the long term fluctuation of ENSO? Also, on a different topic, do you have any nice pictures to share of the snow from Central Park? This was a very photogenic storm and last year and the year before you posted some nice images from the Park from a twitter feed, but I dont remember the site anymore

somebody wake up the people at the local airports and ask them to please measure the snow before it all melts- the last measurements were at 1 am and were under an inch lol. It should be 1.5"

Merrick also got 1.5" Looks like higher totals in Suffolk with West Babylon coming in at around 2.5" and closer to 3" up around Huntington.

Possible Dec 1-3 Winter Storm
LibertyBell replied to Zelocita Weather's topic in New York City Metro
lol if you got 1.5" by 5 PM and then an additional 1.0" that is indeed significant, because you nearly doubled your snowfall totals! what are the measuring rules, I thought you're supposed to add up the measurements if snow melted in between? it didn't stop snowing here until a bit after 7 AM -
I used to work there, right on Montauk Highway. There's a park near there with a lake in it and lots of bird life, nice area.

even 60 would be pretty common, even in our snowier/colder winters

I saw a measurement of 3.5" from Westerleigh, thought that might have been either you or Uncle W lol.
