    Did you get a load of Bismarck ND average temp anomalies? +10 for December and +20 so far two thirds of the way through January!

    that actually looks like an omega block that we see when wavelengths shorten in March. One thing that we haven't discussed yet, since blocking in various regions has become more common now, can climate change result in shortening wavelengths to even occur in January? Perhaps we are seeing that now.

    I wonder about our tendency to now get bigger precip bombs, if analogs from 30+ years ago can still be used. a storm that would have given us 4-6 inches of snow 30 years ago may be more likely to give us 8-10 inches now, and likewise a storm that was going to give us half an inch of rain 30 years ago may be more likely to give us an inch.

    One storm really stands out to me (aside from the one in January that the Euro got wrong lol), and that was the bowling ball event that took a northerly track and produced a long conveyor belt of snow from the upper midwest straight into central new england. Ever seen anything like that before, Will?

Their hive intelligence leads to cooperation and their collective intelligence enables them to do complex astronomical calculations and use the sun to determine the direction to fly. They even know meteorology and use the wind to tell their companions how long it will take to fly to the new hive.

    That reminds me of a study that was done which showed that people are more receptive to helping others in need when they are by themselves, but in a crowd they stand by and watch bad things happen....

    I think it might be too late for that. The oceans have already been absorbing a lot and it's destroying the marine ecosystem. In addition to that our oceans fuel our storms so warmer oceans mean many more extreme storms, which we're already seeing. And there's also the coral reef bleaching issues. We should just shut down the fossil fuel industry, period. Whatever hit we get because of it, it's nothing compared to the damage the fossil fuel industry is doing. It needs to be shut down completely.

    It's rather exciting in a way. I can't wait until we get a Cat 3 TC that turns into a blizzard in February haha. Could also happen in October.

    This south based block is a new wrinkle....is this the first time we've ever had one of these? If not, possible analogs of years that had them? I've only ever heard of west based blocks and east based blocks, this is the first time anyone has ever brought up a south based block, so it sounds like something new.

    I thought this kind of reminded me of the 80s actually. But of course much less cold lol.

    are you sure? one out of those three had amongst our least snowy seasons of all time, and the other two were very mild with one hit wonders (granted those hits we did have were two of our best snowstorms ever.)

    It looks like the pattern gets more unfavorable every year, and that's regardless of whatever ENSO phase we're in.

    my favorite pattern is a trough on the west coast and a trough on the east coast with a ridge in between- it looks like the Greek letter Omega

    we rarely get those kinds of arctic outbreaks here anymore so I didn't think it likely either. Highs near freezing are a good possibility though. why people like extreme cold is beyond me
