Two items

1. Thunderstorms require a source of lift to form.  The western piedmont trough is such a source, which is why many times cell pop-up there first.

2. Thunderstorms are by nature self-limiting as the downdraft from the rain chokes of the convective updraft.  There must be some mechanism to separate the downdraft from the updraft for a system to last.  One example is shear.

In a stagnant dynamic environment, which is very common in this area in late summer, it is common for cells to pop off the piedmont trough but then die quickly without any mechanism to keep them going.

That's not the whole story, but it's definitely a major part.

Some of it is also just bad luck.

Yep...I made the same post. It is raining now here in Fuquay-Varina but very light. Not going to amount to much. I just want a solid t storm. Not the stuff they got IN SE greensboro yesterday (it was insane) just 40 mph gusts...lightning ans serious rain. I don't ask for much

 Clemson at LSU originally had a 6:30PM CDT scheduled kickoff. But due to a lightning delay/heavy thunderstorms, they’re not kicking off til 8:40PM CDT! This supposedly would be the latest start in LSU history!

 I read that Lane Kiffin does not have either of the former pros on its roster for tonight. He’s worried due to a lawsuit by the SEC against LSU. The concern is that LSU would possibly have to forfeit any games with them on the roster. There’s also the worry about eventually being thrown out of the SEC although that’s very highly unlikely.

I was all set for some food storm activity here in Eastern Durham County today. Watching football and the radar and it all looked great. Sky was getting dark to my Northwest and said  to myself yeah this is our turn. Went outside and the outflow boundary kicked in big time, winds whipping and It felt great sitting on the back porch. Clouds still look nice and dark, radar looked good.  Then it happened. As soon as the bulk of the storm decided to shift a tad NE of me and the line split and died when it got here and wound up with .01" here today. So everyday this week has been a shutout until today with a most nice looking radar line and kapoof. So I feel your pain Wake county peeps. It isn't any better here in eastern Durham county. Western Durham county/city gets the rain though. The shield lives on. 

Looking forward to a nice comfortatable day tomorrow well Sunday here.

I'm visiting family for the holiday and wasn't watching the radar closely.  Did anyone capture a file?

No file,  this is all I saved. 

 

In the first image that part of the storm between 93 and Gorham have been heading toward my home most of the time. As soon as it crossed 885 it started swinging to the Northeast some

in the 2nd image, in that circle thats all that was let and died out in that circle.
