Number of snow events per winter

Deck Pic

Recommended Posts

Below are the number of snow events of 0.2" or more for each winter IMBY.  I don't count T or 0.1" as snow events.  This gives me a better gauge on what to expect the rest of the winter versus amounts...I figure I am good for 2-3 more....2003-04 was the only winter I was shut out in February and March.  Hopefully this won't be a repeat

In under 10 seconds, I expect someone from Westminster or York to come in with this EXACT comment -

"Wow!  I knew you guys had it bad, but I didn't realize how bad.  I got 27 events in 2009-10 and I already have 20 this season!"

Average through 2012-13 - 6.9

2013-14 (to date) - 5

2012-13 - 7

2011-12 - 4

2010-11 - 10

2009-10 - 9

2008-09 - 5

2007-08 - 3

2006-07 - 8

2005-06 - 6

2004-05 - 8

I like sorting it that way. Up to 6 at my house ytd. Surprised you had so many last year...I guess enough little ones to get to that number. I have crossed much of last winter out of my mind.

We had those consecutive day small events in late January and then early February...that is the only reason...they were discrete events...Like in February, I got 0.5" one afternoon, and then 0.25" the next afternoon so they are 2 events even if minor

Yeah, like I said, I have probably blocked those from my mind. I would have to drag the thread for last year back up to check. I am sure I am similar.

02-03 just stands out in my mind as the best door to door winter in the last 15 years. I was living in Germantown at the time. We even had snow on xmas eve that year. Don't think it happened in DC. Can't remember? All three months were great. Upper moco maximized on both shots in PDII.

I bought my house in Rockville in March of 03. There was still good snowpack on the ground when I first looked at it and made an offer.

Rockville got around

2002-03

56" in 13 events

1995-96

66" in 14 events

so both amazing winters...95-96 was better by a hair

2009-10 beat them both in terms of totals of course, but maybe not other qualitative factors

I missed most of the 90's here (92-98 winters). 99-00 had the nice surprise but coming from the rockies I wasn't really all that focused on snow. 02-03 totally rekindled that. And now I'm here. Whether the rekindling thing is good or bad has yet to be determined. In between 02-03 and 09-10 kinda pissed me off. Yea, some of those storms were great but few and far between and too much warm boring stuff.

I was thinking last night of trying to figure out what our typical series of snow events per year at DC/A is. Like... One 3-6, one 2-4, one hundred traces. Not sure it's regular enough to do that but might check.

Rockville gas and light measured quite a bit, and when they didnt there was a guy at Glenmont, Forest Glen, Potomac, and sometimes Montgomery College

The extent of my snow obsession: I've spent many a night with a martini or two reliving my favorite months of winter weather by clicking through the "precipitation" pdf's.

I don't have either of these.  Went back and confirmed with other CoCoRahs observations in Fairfax Co.  Looks like both were Potomac R. and northeast events.

yeah...looks like 12/13-14 was a 0.2" event at DCA, and 2/27 a 0.1" at DCA...I remember the latter as it clocked 40N....the former, I don't remember off the top of my head but must have fallen around midnight

For variety too, it's been a classic: 3 widespread freezing rain events with one of them being a legit ice storm for northern areas, record cold, accumulating sleet.

These two March storms brought DC's percentage-of-average snowfall to the ~200% range, making us at least in the same playing field as the cities to our northeast even though we still lag. And all that catching up was done after February 20th!

I I stuck mine out besides yours for comparison. Interesting, some years you were up, some I was. Biggest difference I see is 09-10, where NW flow kept giving me 'baby snows' of 0.5-1.0, guessing you missed those.
