OK, about SSTs...

So I was looking at three buoys relatively near us, one in the entrance to the NY Harbor (44065), one in the LI Sound near Islip (44025), and one 54 nm southeast of Nantucket (44008)

So these were the water temps for yesterday, Jan 31 2012:

44065: 46-47 F

44025: 44-46 F

44008: 46-47 F

Now, for those same buoys, Jan 31 2011:

44065: 37-38 F

44025: 40-41 F

44008: 42-43 F

So the greatest difference was closer to shore, but still water temps are running several degrees higher this year than last.

So when, last season, did these buoys drop to the temps they are recording now, in late Jan/early Feb of 2012 (this is when they last saw such a temp until Spring 2011):

44065: Dec 25, 2010, 46 F

44025: Jan 5, 2011, 44 F

44008: Jan 3, 2011, 46 F

Now, last year, this is the date it took for each buoy to reach the temps that they are presently recording now...

44065: April 23, water temp hit 46 F

44025: April 9, water temp hit 45 F

44008: April 25, water temp hit 46F

Now I realize the coldest water temps are usually Feb into early March, but the lows for 2011 weren't that much lower than what we saw on Jan 31 of that year:

44065: 35 F, Feb 5

44025: 37 F, Feb 15

44008: 40 F, Feb 22

Wonder how this plays out for not only borderline situations by the coast in any possible upcoming storms but also spring time temps (stupid sea breeze).

That's some crazy sheit right there. Wow.

The degree to which they warm (no pun intended) in the spring will likely eventually catch up with reality...and even a 60-65 degree water temp can kill incoming thunderstorms which is probably why some of the worst storm events historically have been in September or late August near the coast....even July you can see storms weaken as they approach.

You know it's over when only the DGEX and Nogaps brings snow into the area for Sunday.

When the Nogaps is amplified, it's a red flag to the other models. :snowing:

and where's the cold air? Highs in the 40's for the next week is hardly a pattern flip. RIP "winter" 2011-2012

Everyone is going with a warm February. This winter really sucks. If nothing produces by mid February, bring on spring because I had enough of this ****ty winter.

this winter is a 01-02 with a little bit of 97-98 thrown in..agree I give it till Feb 15th..after that in my mind it will be spring..thoughts will go to severe season, hurricanes and yes next winter..and of course THE METS

I can't wait to go to Wildwood and Cooperstown this summer

I'll be right there with ya! Going to Cooperstown Dreams Park in August for a week as my son has a travel baseball tournament up there and then I'll be in Wildwood Crest in July and then again in August for a week. Can't wait! Love the Wildwoods!

I am looking forward to going to a lot of games. My friend gets upper deck tickets off ebay but he knows someone that works there so we sit all the way near home plate.

Actually Mets games are a lot of fun. Not too crowded, good food, tickets are cheap, and I can just hop on the 7 from GC and be right there.

I'm probably going to Cooperstown in April and Wildwood in May and possibly July or August. I usually stay in Wildwood Crest. It is much quieter over there than it is in Wildwood. I can't wait to go to Duffers. I stay in the Cara Mara . Ever heard of that motel?

Im not a Mets fans but the new stadium is a fun place and a treat to go to. Great food, great atmosphere and awsome to be able to walk over the bridge and hang out in the back.

Ahh yes sounds familiar. We stay at the Fleur Di Lis, right on the beach in the Crest but within a 10-15 minute walk up to the boardwalk. Love Duffers! I get the homemade waffle ala mode with vanilla bean ice cream. Oh yeah babe! Don't forget about Curley's Fries and Mack's Pizza!
