A couple locations south of Des Moines got 3-4" of snow. The atmosphere was very dry here for most of the day, so all I've seen is some super light rain this evening.
70º for Cedar Rapids on Wednesday is gone now that all models have sped up the frontal passage to first thing in the morning, which is what the GFS has been for showing for days. We do have a shot at 70º on Tuesday, though.
Cedar Rapids hit 70º this afternoon, the first time since March 21st. It was not expected at all. The forecast had only recently got bumped up to the mid 60s. It's too bad the wind was too strong to really enjoy the nice temp for most of the day.
The cold season up here lasts one month too long. I would love to be able to snap my finger and add 10º to the average high temp after the spring equinox.
We hit 75º back on March 21st. We've only hit 50º three times since then. It appears next Wednesday will be our only 70º day out of the upcoming pattern change. The latest Euro then shows the upper midwest plunging right back into a long cold pattern with 40s, or even 30s, for highs for several days. I really despise springs like this. #!@$#(&*!@#(*^
GFS and Euro precip next week. lol
The GFS pushes the initial front way south while the Euro keeps it stalled over us. Then the GFS tracks the main low well north while the Euro tracks it over us, so this morning's runs are basically the driest and wettest possible scenarios.
3-5" of snow fell from Dubuque into far nw Illinois. The snow is already nearly gone in Iowa as the clouds move out and the sun instantly burns it off.
18z HRRR
The HRRR had the snow farther south earlier this morning, but it has trended north toward the other models. Cyclone and I may end up just barely south of the 1-4" snow band.
For this area (I assume cyclone's area is similar) <15" winters are rare, but 15-25" is pretty typical in bad winters. Over the last fifteen years, my worst winters are 21", 20", and 17". I was fortunate to get 26" this winter.
Models are showing a nice burst of snow Saturday morning, with perhaps 1-3".
The latest Euro has a nearly identical system Sunday night that drops another thin band of snow in the same area.
0.9" of snow here this morning in one brief burst. Unfortunately, I woke up shortly after it was over.
As usual, the Des Moines area is the bulls-eye with 2-3".
