  1. My area got hit hard overnight. My 2.38" makes my yard one of the drier locations. There are many stations to the south and northeast reporting 3-4", with 5+" just southeast of Cedar Rapids. We also received several hours of lightning and thunder (a few of those hours were only distant lightning and light rumbles). The final cell this morning produced the best lightning and thunder of the last couple years.
  2. An area of showers to the west and south has produced an area of cloudiness which has overspread my area today. The recent pattern has been almost 100% sun for many days, so today's cloudy sky is a nice break. Models are mixed regarding the possible storm action late tonight into Saturday morning. I sure hope it doesn't bust because this is the only chance for another week.
  3. We continue to get some nice periods of pleasant air this spring/summer, but it sure is boring.
  4. Another dry cold frontal passage here this evening. We need Friday to deliver.
  5. Cold fronts that end a heat wave have produced nothing here this year, and today is no different. At least I was able to get a decent storm a couple days ago along the warm front. It appears the next chance of rain is at least a week away.
  6. Models are not optimistic about much action around here until the front is east of Cedar Rapids. Cyclone has a much better shot at getting a storm.
  7. We reached 95º yesterday. It was hot, but the dewpoint was only in the upper 60s and the wind was fairly strong, so it really didn't feel too bad. Monday was more oppressive with a temp in the upper 80s and a dew in the mid to upper 70s.
  8. A storm just dropped some half-inch size hail here in CR. I got a solid 0.45" of rain from it as well.
  9. 1.48" of needed rain fell here overnight into this morning. The soaking was widespread from my area westward into central Iowa. It was mostly just a gentle moderate rain, but a couple tiny, bubbly cells produced the first lightning and thunder (only a few rumbles, but it counts) since April.
  10. It was certainly a dryish month across the corn belt. The grass has lost its lushness, which, frankly, isn't a bad thing. Now I no longer have to mow every three days. We aren't desperate for rain at this point, especially with pleasant temps for the foreseeable future, but it would be nice if we could trend back in the opposite direction as we head into summer. I don't want drought to rebuild.
  11. Another minor light rain event this morning dropped 0.09". Today, the storms will redevelop well east and south of my area. I have officially made it through May with zero thunderstorms. My May rain total is 2.63" (avg is ~4.50").
  12. Since late Tuesday I picked up 0.91" of rain... nothing spectacular, but a nice soaking.
  13. Here we are in late May and we still can't get anything but cool/cold rain. When warm and humid air finally surges up here the atmosphere is strongly capped. That's what happened last week and it's going to repeat this weekend into next week. This is supposed to be the heart of our severe season.
  14. Cedar Rapids may go the first three weeks of May without a rumble. May/June is a bad time of year to get stuck in an unfavorable t-storm pattern.
  15. It has not rained here in eight days. It may be another eight days until the next rain.
  16. There is a strong storm with a nice hail core crawling right over Cyclone's house.
  17. The dewpoint has mixed down to 61º here, making this afternoon more tolerable.
  18. Record heat and humidity in mid May and it's looking increasingly likely we won't get a drop of rain out of it.
  19. It became pretty uncomfortable by mid afternoon as we approached 90º with 70s dew and not much wind. The wind really helped yesterday. We just had a month of cold rain. Now we finally get heat and humidity, but we're capped all week.
  20. Our latest significant rain event, scheduled for Thursday/Friday, is now gone thanks to the big action down in OK/AR/KS/MO. Today's surge of rain up into Iowa has, instead, tracked eastward to St. Louis.
  21. I picked up another 1.23" from the latest system. My total since March 1st is 9.75". Sayonara to the abnormally dry conditions. It is very wet and lush here. Well, it's not leaf-out lush because that has barely begun, but the grass is lush.
  22. Not only that, but the Euro also has the dewpoint in the mid 70s. That's ridiculous. I'm going to assume that's too high given the time of year, but it should still be humid. I'd really prefer we get a week of pleasant 70s instead of going from 50 to 90.
  23. One of the local mets said it was the windiest April in Cedar Rapids since 1994 and the windiest in Waterloo since 1978.
  24. Mother Nature is trying to ixnay the plains drought... good for everyone.
