  1. I heard that too! He must mean kph right?
  2. NPZ congrats on your 0.6 which is double what my parched area has over the last week. NorthArlington nice video! We are talking about maybe Tampa/St. Pete area for retirement -- I guess there might be some lighting here and there in that area
  3. The Germantown desert shield showed its power in a new way. This was heading SE then took a hard S turn just as it got to the Shield -- see the severe warning box pointing south. The Germandesert shield could stop Ida in its tracks
  4. On the one hand I get some optimism that maybe this thing won't strengthen as fast as feared, but on the other hand it could actually be worse if it only strengthens gradually then explodes just before landfall. I'd like to see it peak early then hit an ERC and weaken just before landfall.
  5. Whew it's a warm one! Moved my son into a College Park apartment this morning and get to do it all again in an hour for the daughter. Better than last year when we moved our daughter into a dorm on a 95-degree day and you couldn't park closer than about 500 feet away! NPZ: I don't know about your area but we do just fine here with rain during the six-month long 49 degrees and rain season from November to April. It's just summer thunderstorms that almost always miss here, likely due to higher elevations close by from SW all the way around to NE. We did get one big one on August 10 but I was in OC
  6. I predict 0.00 for me and am certain that I will be watering my garden this evening
  7. I was just in a meeting with some people in Arlington and DC and they were talking about their big sudden storm. So jealous! My crispy yard could use just one storm but I know it won't happen.
  8. Last night's storms. One looked like a can't miss as it moved east but hit a wall at I-270 which shows clearly here. I got to see lightning to the north for a while, then the south. Amazing micro climate.
  9. What a ridiculous spot this is. Been hearing thunder for 45 minutes but not a drop as storms go in all directions around. I mean look at this. Even God can't make it rain here (yeah I called you out)
  10. I've been finding monarch chrysalises on the fence, house siding, potted plants, etc. I have brought 20 in so far. I must have low predation this summer because my 60-70 tropical milkweeds have been half stripped in the last week and the cats might run out! If they do, I can take them over to a meadow nearby that has lots of native swamp milkweeds. It would be like going from tender baby romaine to kale but they'll live
  11. Nice morning to be out on the deck -- if only I didn't have three annual cicadas having a damn concert out there! Don't they know the early morning noise rules?
  12. Amazing how the rain keep picking on the same areas. I'm confident enough in no rain here that I watered everything this morning and am grilling burgers outside this evening no worries
  13. You're not crazy! Soon after I posted I realized I left off the legend and edited the post. I really wish the iweather rainfall map went back further than 72 hours. It is really nice and and shows my rain scraps pretty accurately. A huuuuuuge 0.3 today -- I will stay vigilant
  14. Here's one from the drop-down menu on NWS-Sterling. It's not nearly as good as the iweathernet map, but that one only goes to 72 hours.
  15. It seems like more than ever some places get huge rains while others get very little. It is really weird. I was hoping this one would be more spread out but nope, all the heavy stuff is just to my east and southeast and can't get here.
  16. The Dome is doing its thing -- just 0.11 so far and not raining at all now. Stuck between heavy areas north and south and will be lucky to get any more. Hell I might have to water stuff later on.
  17. Those rip currrents are serious stuff. Just read about a 50-year old guy and his 28-year old son both lost to a rip at the NC coast. Terrible.
  18. Got a little rain overnight, but as is almost always the case, more fell in seemingly every direction. This is last 12 hours
  19. My area continues to avoid any bursts of rain and I expect to be shut out tonight and tomorrow. I'll probably have to get out the garden hose tomorrrow
  20. Some good stuff over and SW of Strasburg moving your way -- hopefully holds together
  21. If that verified, NPZ would replace the desert pic with the lush green one like a few years ago. Some nice-looking showers developing to the south moving north. We do well with those (it's the west-to-east movers that miss me more often than not)
  22. Good to hear about Nags Head! My sister and family are there and she was very worried about a dreary week. Latest forecast looks a lot better than it did a couple days ago. We got kicked off north OC on Friday for a thunderstorm sliding east a few miles to the north. Any idea what the rule is -- just audible thunder? People were mad because everyone seems to have radar on their phones and were complaining that it's not coming this way On a dumb note, after an early morning TS that missed very close but with visible CTG bolts right over the water just 1-2 miles out, there was a guy with two little kids running around on the sand
  23. Here is a cool pic as it moved away
  24. As we were packing up to come home from OC early yesterday morning, we had a surprise thunderstorm develop literally a few thousand feet to the east and move away, which I was glad for since we were loading the car. I got to see some great lightning strikes over the water and could see the heavy curtain of rain maybe 2000 feet away. I tried taking a pic but it didn't work. It was a good view of what it looks like when I get Germantowned with a storm missing me by a mile or two. Here is what it looked like on radar as it blew up
