LWX bullish on t-storms tomorrow afternoon/evening with 70% chance even for the desert area. Not happening here but some lucky spots will cash in (congrats again AA and Balt). Some storms might be interesting with that much heat to work with.
-
Zilch again but I knew that last Friday's early morning thunderstorm was it for the summer here. I envy places that got such a good dousing before going into the heat wave but I'll just run my sprinkler system hard before going to work tomorrow. That's desert living. Next summer I'm gonna have to let go of certain plants I like and go with more drought tolerant stuff.

With this (thankfully) short-lived heat wave coming I saw there's been just one 95 degree day so far (DCA). I remember the infamous summer of 1980 so I checked it out -- 28 days 95-plus and six 100-plus! 10 of the first 11 days of Aug were 95-plus with two 100s, and the one other day was 94. Man that was bad. And we didn't have AC!

My niece in southern AA Co has flooding in her yard and her veggie garden is being swamped. I cannot believe the difference in rainfall from one part of our region to another
-
Wow didn't even know there were storms as I sit in the desert with full sun and zero chance for rain. Annapolis to Balt area over and over...
-
Oooh that's gonna be a hot one! Not as bad as Friday but still... Looking nicer by Sunday maybe
-
I see we are back to normal with all the rain just to my S and E -- barely a trace here. That's why I got up and enjoyed last Friday's 3 am fluke thunderstorm -- I know that was likely the one storm of the summer for me
-
Wow is it a nice morning! If I wasn't lazy this would be an ideal time for a long walk. But sipping coffee on the deck is fine too OK heat misers here we go! Glad to see WxUSAF explain that the big heat should be short lived though
-
On another note, it's 73 and sunny at 10:40am on July 21 with clean air. Doesn't get much better than that!
-
Yeah it's gonna take some work to chip away at those deficits. This is county averages, so specific spots might be way worse. I know my spot is way worse off than say Rockville, etc
-
A stunning 1.5 which is the most rain in one storm I can remember in a long time, and is more than all of June combined. Up to 3.4 for July so far. Side note - what did they do with the iweather rainfall map? It used to be so accurate against CoCoRaHS and even my gauge. Now, not only can you not zoom in, it is way off the mark.
-
Woke up to hard rain and T&L. First time here in ages! Just now had a strike within 100 feet. Looking at radar I could pass the mythical 1 inch mark which would be the first time since I don't know when

2023 Mid-Atlantic Severe Wx Thread (General Discussion)
BlizzardNole replied to Kmlwx's topic in Mid Atlantic
Solid arc of severe TS warnings from near Toronto/Buffalo all the way back to central Ohio. Gotta wonder what this thing would have done in peak afternoon heating! Hoping to score but it's tough in the rain shadow, especially with NW to SE moving stuff.- 2,785 replies

30-day rainfall map really shows the rain hole in our severe drought region. So another overnight disturbance coming? OK southern MD to eastern shore folks enjoy your 2-4 inches. We'll be watering tomorrow morning
-
Everything sliding just to the south, what a shock
-
Just looked at some dreary web cams from OC MD. I would have gladly taken their rainy day for them, but we don't do rainy days here in summer, ever. We do soaking rain and 33 in winter just great, but summer here is so arid.
-
Winners keep winning. When will this ever shift?
-
0.30 total. I was hoping for more but it's better than nothing. It sure seems like there are more extremes of the same places getting big rains over and over and other places nothing.
-
Got about 0.25 from that shower a little while ago. Hoping for more later from that stuff in central VA but will need a little more of a N component
-
Board name checks out Spent a good chunk of time out on the deck as it's fairly nice out. Hoping for rain later tonight

Are you N of Baltimore? I've got a toasty 89/73 right now

2023 Mid-Atlantic Severe Wx Thread (General Discussion)
BlizzardNole replied to Kmlwx's topic in Mid Atlantic
Night thunderstorms with lots of lightning are my favorite. We used to go to near Atlantic Beach, southern outer banks and that place was ideal for night storms. One time we had one that went on for an hour and there was so much lightning it was like a strobe light.- 2,785 replies

Time to think cold. What is your favorite snow memory?
BlizzardNole replied to ldub23's topic in Mid Atlantic
I was passing by there last June and went in look around and saw my old house at the intersection of Kettering and Bennington Drives. There used to be a big open field right next to us in the 70s that we had fun times in. Now it's all houses. I noticed a lot of retiree-aged people around and the yards looked really nice. Older folks love the gardening! -

Best big event: Blizzard of '79 in hardest hit Calvert County. Was like a hurricane of snow where at times we could not see the woods less than 100 feet from the house. Total was 30-36 with 6-plus foot drifts. Best smaller event: Jan. 1978 in Kettering, MD with forecast of rain developing in the evening and continuing overnight, possibly beginning as a brief period of snow. Got a totally unexpected front end thump with about 6 inches in just 2-3 hours, then drizzle after. Best positive bust ever -
Finally got my first thunderstorm of the summer! Some good lightning and thunder, and 0.6 which is the most in one day in many many weeks. It may not sound like much but for here it is a deluge. Puts July at 1.5 which is already better than the extremely dry May and June.
