  1. I remember seeing the last of the green trees the beginning of Dec 1975...it got cold fast in December 1975...November 1975 was the warmest on record at the time...

  3. I'm not worried about some warm days the first part of December...1960, 1966 and some other years had record warmth the first week in dec and snow at the end of the second week...I'll take snow when ever it comes (i have no say anyway) but I'd rather have it begin the week before Christmas...
  4. if you look at 2017-18's daily AO it snowed most of the time the AO was negative big time or briefly...

  8. Feb was the coldest snowiest month last winter in NYC...Some la nina winters are like that...NYC had three in the 1970's with February being the coldest snowiest month...72, 74, 75...granted the winters were not cold on average...only February and some years March too...Decembers were warmer than average including last year...
  9. December was colder than average… rest of the winter was mild…Snowfall in nyc in 1950-51 was way below average…coldest temp and biggest snow was on 12/26 coinciding with the ao’s strongest negative…it was during a drier/colder time…
  10. the April blizzard salvaged that winter in NYC...the Poconos had snow cover from mid Dec to mis March...then 13.5" on April 6th...another 2" a few days later...
  11. 1989 was cold...I don't see that kind of cold or storm...1971 was cold before the storm but moderated and most of the precip was rain in the city...Poconos got snow...
  12. lowest AO numbers for December... -5.821...12/21/2009...11" snowstorm 12/19-20...snow on the ground Christmas... -5.287...12/29/1976....2" snowfall 12/29...snow Christmas night... -5.265...12/18/2010...20" 12/26-27... -4.688...12/29/2000...12" 12/30...trace on the ground Christmas... -4.547...12/27/1968.....2" 12/28... -4.470...12/20/1963...7" 12/23-24...6" on the ground Christmas... -4.353...12/19/1995...8" 12/19-20...4" on the ground Christmas...flurries at night... -4.353...12/26/1950...3" 12/26... -4.159...12/31/1962...cold wave...flurries...big storm in the Gulf of Maine...1" on the ground Christmas afternoon... -4.147...12/13/1966...wet snow 12/13-14...7" on the ground Christmas morning...
  13. 1995-96 had two major thaws the last week of Jan and Feb 1996...2002-03 was a colder winter in NYC...1993-94 was colder also...Feb 1994 had a major thaw...
  14. it was locked in from Nov 95 to Nov 96...then it flipped...
  15. if we get another -5sd AO I'll bet my house we see a blockbuster snowstorm this winter...I'd rather see it in December like 2009 and 2010...2002 had one in October and 1959 had one in November...not only did they both have a blockbuster snowstorm but snow on the ground for Christmas...
  16. of the 24 official la nina winters since 1954-55 only 1970-71, 2005-06, 2008-09 had a stronger DJF oni than the NDJ oni...some years peaked in NDJ and then faded...some years peaked before NDJ and was fading already...last year's NDJ oni was -1.2 and weakening...it peaked at -1.3 in the OND period...

  18. I probably have the same almanac somewhere...as a sports fan 1968 was Mantles last season and the Jets going to the Super bowl and winning...The Lindsey snowstorm in Feb 69...Woodstock in August 69...Mets win in October 69...after that no more champianships or major storms until 1977-78...
  19. I'll stick my neck out for at least a good December...Last year was mild but had one good snowstorm which is all you can ask for these days...
