  1. That was fun. Rather chilly Halloween on tap - a jacket is certainly called for on top of your togas and sexy nurse uniforms. The NAM only gets up to 43F at POU... that would be the third-coldest high for the date. Record low of 18F is not in jeopardy at the airport. Not sure what to think about radiating prospects, as the GFS and 12z NAM decoupled the favored sports quickly and efficiently, allowing for lows in the teens. HRRR and 18z NAM keep winds, and consequential temperatures, up throughout the night.
  2. Cool shot of the snow line at the Ashokan courtesy of the DEP on facebook:
  3. Here are some photos I took of this morning's snowfall around northern Dutchess County, from around 7:30 am to 12:30 pm. Ordinarily I would only post a couple of images, but with the excitement of the first snow and anomalous nature of the event, I had a hard time selecting. Starting my own thread to avoid clogging up the main storm thread, but feel free to share your own pictures here as well. One can see accumulations and snow growth both gradually increasing over the course of the morning. Also worth noting the not-insignificant amount of foliage left on some trees.
  4. 2011-12 and 2015-16 would each like a word with you. I had a tradition, when nobody was looking, of throwing the first snowball of the year at the dilapidated 19th-century flagpole near my driveway, from the back patio. About 75 feet. If I hit it, it was going to be a big winter. TS Isaias brought it down back in August and I didn't think much of it (one less thing to impede straight lawnmower swaths), but today, without thinking, I scooped up some snow, turned toward where it stood, and...
  5. Flake size is way up and visibility way down with this (presumably) last band intensifying overhead. Even at just 1.6", some of my ornamental trees are sagging low.
  6. We should just have a sub-forum for each poster, so no-one has to be rudely exposed to another person's weather.
  7. I'm resigned to this being the case. ENSO always bode poorly for us this year anyway, so this seals it for me. Then again, my pessimism this morning proved unfounded so maybe I'm best ignored. edit: ..."bade poorly"? Boded? Someone fetch an English teacher
  8. Wonderful morning. 1.4" new with ongoing light snow - more just up the hill from me, where roads turned slushy. I had my doubts early this morning when temps were holding steady in the upper 30, but the models handled the CAA and dynamic cooling well. I'll post some photos in a bit from my drive around northern Dutchess... there's a ton of foliage left, and I have no doubt power issues would be widespread with slightly higher snowfall totals.
  9. LOL, I was just reading "puking" and "wrecked" in the upstate thread when you said this. Have some standards. 38F here, this probably isn't gonna happen imby.
  10. 43/43F, not a bad starting place but there is work to be done. Tipper says I have over 2" of rain so far.
  11. Next time a neighbor accuses me of neglecting my lawn, I'm just going to show them my new irrigation channel. That's next-level suburb'ing.
  12. Major levee breach event ongoing in the front yard, seek higher ground
  13. Well, the novelty of this rain event has fully worn off and I wish for it to stop.
  14. Yeah, leaf reports would help. The Highlands around Storm King/Breakneck still had extensive coverage a couple days ago, but the weather the last couple days certainly could have changed that.
  15. OK, I need to figure out my weenie hike tomorrow. Storm King probably offers the best snowliage potential on account of the leaves near the river don't fall until about MLK Day. Stissing is closest to me and therefore probably the safest trip with (presumably?) untreated roads, and is even a tad higher than Storm King. Overlook or North Point will see the best accums, but again, those roads could get dicey.
  16. Nice halo around the moon tonight, sure looks like snow. The evening models so far have certainly trended back toward the potential for accumulations. A little bit of elevation will go a long way, especially if you still believe in the GFS warm BL bias.
  17. Will someone say the first "ripping" of the season this week? I'm taking' bets
  18. They really seem to like the Peekskill waterfront. I think it was Feb '19 when I saw a couple dozen eagles there at once, a mix of juveniles and adults. Some were close to shore but many were perched on floes in the middle of the river... you see little black specks peppered across the ice field and think it's just driftwood or something, then as they drift closer (or you zoom in with your camera) you realize it's all eagles. Denning's Point in Beacon and Norrie Point in Staatsburg are two more spots where you can reliably count on sightings during the winter.
  19. I was driving down Bruynswick Road in Gardiner with the top down late last week, just passing the Majestic View Farm as the sun was setting behind the ridge, and a mature eagle flew right over me. It's always a thrill to see one, even as sightings become more frequent every year. I wonder sometimes if the novelty will wear off when the eagle population reaches a certain size, but it strikes me that I can still appreciate the beauty and majesty of a whitetail, the overgrown rats that they are.
  20. A couple tenths of an inch of frozen would be ideal Thursday night. Enough to set records for shortest off-season (and strike fear into the hearts of the feckless snow-haters), but not enough to trigger the curse on the rest of the winter.
  21. Feels almost crisp out. Why, I'll bet it's only 5F above-normal!
  22. Just started pouring here with no radar returns. Wringing out all that moisture in the lowest couple thousand feet.
