  1. 103 mph non thunderstorm wind gust at Guadalupe Peak.
  2. In the 1970s, public schools had a lower threshold, St. Martin of Tours (Amityville/Massapequa) had about a 6 inch threshold. But lower standards of Gen-Z, I think 3 inches, especially as they haven't used any days, should be enough for a snow day. And maybe another one Friday?
  3. After today's significant Oklahoma outbreak (a derecho and SigTors), March 2nd already 30%. Thursday afternoon and evening look severe-ish.
  4. I taught 6th science for 3 years, eukaryotes and prokaryotes, 'pro' rhymes with 'no', 'eu' with do, and almost half will still get which one has a nucleus wrong.
  5. IMBY-ism, the last major hurricane to landfall in Houston/Galveston CWA was during the 1983 Death Niño
  6. It is February. I'm guessing average to below average, myself. Euro free seasonal only goes to JJA, but that is dry W. MDR, Caribbean and Gulf.
  7. Well outside even the Marginal Risk area in Houston, but the storms after midnight, despite being after midnight, have decent instability. Odd kink in hodo (veer-back-veer) says tornado threat near nil, but the middle level lapse rates don't look terrible. I'd think hail might be possible.
  8. I posted in the TX/OK thread last week on this. At the time, GFS/Euro and ensembles had the trough going negative tilt.
  9. Sun angle might be a problem by then, but isn't a negative NAO starting to become less negative (Euro weeklies) a signal for a winter storm?
  10. GEFS and EPS consistent on a strong neutral to negative tilt trough a week from this Monday/Tuesday.
  11. There is some insolation even under cloudy skies, I'd think dark road surfaces might warm enough to melt snow even just below freezing.
  12. 11 am Alliance and Denton had dewpoints in the teens, which would explain some virga. That would also tend to keep temperatures below freezing if there is rain evaporating into it
  13. Dry layer producing evaporation, aka virga? Not what I've been reading, there are areas of freezing mist/drizzle that radar is not detecting.
  14. AUS has had 0.87 inches QPF and was reporting freezing rain the entire time the last 6 hours.
  15. Reed Timmer in S Dallas County has gone to sleet from freezing rain. I am curious how much ice actually sticks on trees and powerlines. NW Suburban Austin seeing power outages reported on Twitter.
  16. Per Twitter, heavier showers/t-storms W side of Metroplex are sleet. I think the depth of the cold air in just a light rain/drizzle situation determines if it sleet or snow. P-type seems to be one of the more difficult things to forecast. I wonder if FWD would do a 18Z sounding for p-type.
  17. Austin now in a Winter Storm warning from tomorrow morning until Wednesday morning. I think temps falling faster than expected. Lows tomorrow night from NWS above freezing, although the warning may have been a priority over the zones.
  18. I'm not sure I understand EWX's justifications for reluctantly including Travis County in the WS Watch, that the higher elevations in the W. part of the county might be cold enough for freezing rain. The new AUS airport at Bergstrom gets colder than the old Mueller site does, because cold air drains to the lower elevations.
