  1. It will probably be warmer in the Poconos than it will be on Long Island lol.
  2. Still cold enough lol- I think the ocean hasn't warmed any since January haha
  3. Ed, do you have any records of data from Westhampton going back to 1966 or 1967 showing that they had a freeze in early June? And their latest 0 temp on the first day of Spring?
  4. I remember that happening in northern Queens a few years ago, it hailed for hours...... Why do most hail storms only drop hail for a few minutes (like the ones last Monday) while the rare ones go on for hours?
  5. The lowest temp was 34 at NYC? I thought it got down to 32 at 2 am during the snow shower? How low did it get at JFK? Did they report any snow? And that October 2019 high was 95-96 at JFK.....! I remember that crazy 50 low in August 1986- that was the first year that I saw the Perseid meteor showers and the skies were crystal clear with no haze- never saw them as well as I did my first year! Was 50 also the low at JFK? I also remember the 75 in Feb 1985- that was the same winter when we hit -2 in Jan during the inauguration with a high of 7! Coldest arctic outbreak of my lifetime! Januarys were cold and dry back then and Feb was always much warmer (aside from 1983)! I think LGA and EWR hit 80 in Feb 2018- I saw mosquitoes flying around! I also remember the 72 in Jan 2007- that was the 11 year anniversary of the Jan 1996 blizzard! It was warmer in Jan then April in 2007 with snow all the way down to the SC coast!
  6. I ended up going to the Poconos Friday afternoon and was rewarded with heavy snow showers Friday night (less than an inch) and numerous snow squalls on Saturday (5 of them by my count, with a coating of accumulation in the middle of the day, interrupted by sunshine in between squalls) and then 4 separate hail storms on Monday, also interrupted in between storms by sunshine! Haven't had excitement like that on Long Island in 3 years! I kept checking the radar back home and looks like JFK had like 30 min of snow at the tail end of the storm between 1:45 am and 2:15 am early on Saturday but no snow showers during the day and no hail on Monday? The 22 temp Saturday morning with a wind chill of 7 was a real shocker though brrrrrr......most winter weather I've seen since January! The split was 37/22!
  7. 1997, I think that was it, I was out of the country and saw it in the papers when I got back! Can you find out how large the hail was at JFK or around the Five Towns area or Lynbrook/Valley Stream and how long it hailed for? Thanks!
  8. I remember that was a really dry and hot summer at JFK, the lawns around here were yellow and brown....even in September. Somewhat like 1983.
  9. Yeah, Lee Goldberg of all people lol. So, I'm thinking the latest we had any amt of snow was May 9th, 1977? Is this storm similar to that?
  10. I remember reading that there was car damage from a hail storm on the south shore sometime during the 90s- I forgot what year.
  11. Chris weren't there earlier records, like from the exceptional 1966-67 cold season that had the Hamptons below freezing as late as June? And below zero as late as the first day of Spring?
  12. I would say Memorial Day weekend to be completely safe.
  13. 2002? that was our mildest winter on record followed by mid 90s in April LOL
  14. ABC mentioned that a Trace of snow was reported in NYC on 5/29/95. What was the temp during it and why is it not remembered better? Late at night I presume? It was supposedly the latest snow at NYC. Was that JFK's latest too? I know their latest measurable was 1.5" on 4/19/83.
  15. Measure it with an upside down ruler and you'll have 12 inches!
  16. Would this be more historic than the October snowstorm? We got about 2" here in SW Nassau- all during the day!
  17. what are some of our longer streaks recent, Chris? I'm thinking Feb 2014, Dec 2010-Jan 2011, etc. For the warm season, maybe Summer 2009 or Summer 1992 (after the Pinatubo eruption?)
  18. Yes! March 2010 was the first time I saw transformers blowing up everywhere...it looked like red lightning! Sandy was the second time I saw that. There was a third time it happened here, around midnight in a severe wx event, but I cant remember what year it was (I know I posted about it here though.)
  19. subsidence area between two heavier bands? thats where we usually end up in snowstorms lol.
  20. Yeah I made this list of rain storms that I would take over most snow storms (outside of the 20+ inch snowstorms, those are in their own category.) This is in chronological order (if I had to rank them by severity I think I'd put Dec 1992 first, for its longevity, sustained high winds, rainfall and widespread flooding.) 1. Hurricane Gloria (1985) 2. November severe weather event (1989) 3. Hurricane Bob (1991) 4. Perfect Storm (1991) 5. December noreaster (1992) 6. July Hailstorm (1994) 7. Tropical Storm Bertha (1996) 8. May Derecho (1998) 9. Labor Day Tornado (1998)- an F2 only 2 miles from my house! 10. Hurricane Floyd (1999) 11. October rainstorms (2005)- rainiest month EVER here, around 20" of rain! 12. March noreaster (2010) 13. September derecho/tornadoes (2010) 14. August rainstorm (2011)- rainiest single storm here, around 10" of rain! 15. Hurricane Irene (2011) 16. Hurricane Sandy (2012) There's probably a lot more I missed, but these come to mind right away. edit- I added some severe wx events that came to mind.
  21. it's not really a bust when you consider that this is what these kinds of storms usually do. More rain west / more wind east. NYC/LI 1-2" of rain and 50 mph gusts.... western NJ/PA 3-5" of rain and 30 mph gusts
  22. Yeah those historic events are dramatic and memorable. I just dont want it raining every other day ya know lol. Getting a big event a couple times a month is a good thing to keep things interesting this time of year.
  23. We have a Seattle/Dublin kind of climate now.
