  1. There are things far worse than a true extinction of the human species. Let me paint a picture for you..... A species with a depletion of all natural resources (we currently use the amount of resources that would require 1.7 Earths, so our resource debt is getting worse and worse...), a mass extinction event that wipes out a large segment of our food supply. Pollinators dying out because of chemicals we use. Large areas of droughts and on fire (did you hear about the 124 degrees in Sicily, an all time Europe high and snails being burned alive inside their shells?) Lots of famine, frequent pandemics, and starvation with the land losing its productivity. Animal farming no longer feasible because of drought. Food at such high prices it's no longer affordable by most except in meager supplies.....higher food costs coming from weather disasters of course. And rising income disparities leading to more wars, but this time civil wars, even in developed nations. Maybe the rich are right to fight the space race. That may be the only answer to this now.
  2. why are there two different max temps for JFK? 89.6 at 4:20 PM and 88.0 at 1:51 PM The 89.6 (90) is more accurate and closer to the 91 we had here in SW Nassau, 4 miles from the airport.
  3. I guess they just barely made it to 90! This makes up for all the 89s this summer lol. 89.6 at 16:20 edit well thats weird (so is my newly acquired font color lol).....they list max temp since midnight at 2.0m at 89.6 at 4:20 PM but the 6 hr high is only 88.0 and thats at 1:51 PM.....what gives?
  4. Is this the same storm that got 6 people sent to the hospital because of lightning strikes in the city?
  5. Of course, but what I am saying is why are we using data from a Park to compare to every other official NWS reporting location which are all airports lol. Let's just use LGA from now on and call it a day.
  6. oh I loved those! is SF the only city that has them now?
  7. air pollution is still the leading cause of death and shortening life expectancy, worse than tobacco, thats why NY just switched to electric trucks, replacing diesel and so-called "natural" gas (methane), to control the NO2 pollution and the high rates of asthma because of trucks going in and out of the city. NY and CA have now both switched to electric trucks, it's about time!
  8. not completely- air pollution is still the leading cause of death and shortening life expectancy, worse than tobacco, thats why NY just switched to electric trucks, replacing diesel and so-called "natural" gas (methane), to control the NO2 pollution and the high rates of asthma because of trucks going in and out of the city. NY and CA have now both switched to electric trucks, it's about time!
  9. south shore of Nassau County reached 91 here today between noon and 1 PM
  10. it's a park the rest of NYC isn't a park and we shouldn't be using a park for temp readings anyway, how many of the official NWS reporting sites are parks?
  11. Looks like JFK also hit 90 today, Walt? I was at 91 between noon and 1 PM in southwest Nassau County. Peak heat will be tomorrow!
  12. https://twitter.com/i/events/1425823798733856768 Europe is going to eliminate short haul continental airplane trips with super high speed trains- we should be doing this too. Limit airplanes to overseas (literally overseas) travel. Maglev, hyperloop, etc. can use existing rail technology and are zero emission!
  13. there's even an excessive heat warning here on the south shore of nassau county, probably another one for tomorrow which will be even hotter
  14. Wow that day in July 2011 was definitely the hottest in my memory. Hit 103 here! Interesting to see how August 20, 1983 stands out for being the only one before 1999. That must've been JFK's hottest day in my lifetime in August- that was the only time they hit 100 since the 60s right? They didn't get to 100 in August when NYC hit 103 in August 2001. I see July 2019 is up there too, that was the famous weekend when JFK hit 99 on both days. And it's interesting that aside from that day in July 1995 EWR never had a heat index higher than 119? Was that the day that LGA had their highest heat index too? And do you have a list for NYC too? Thanks, Chris!
  15. wow those were two of the all time hot summers at NYC, both had 39 90+ days! that day in 1991 was one degree off at both for being the first ever same day triple digit temps at both locations!
  16. https://twitter.com/i/events/1425745700835368967 all time record for Europe recorded in Sicily (120F).....also wildfires widespread thoughout the island forcing evacuation of hundreds, 4 dead. Wildfires widespread throughout Italy and Greece making breathing very difficult.
  17. smoke from massive wild fires in Siberia has now reached the north pole - for the first time ever https://twitter.com/i/events/1425551745892196359
  18. oh you're another one that uses that sun/moon site lol. I find that first light always seems to be about an hour before sunrise and last light is almost always an hour after sunset. We have astronomical, nautical and civil twilight and the middle one is what best corresponds to what I experience.
  19. just dont want it taking the power out and wrecking my electronics. everyone needs a lightning rod
  20. just saw the lightning around here, these storms died as they got to the coast? in this heat?!
  21. wow Aug 13, 2016 also happened at the peak of the Perseids, similar to the August heat this year. Do you recall what the high temp and highest heat index on that day was at JFK? I think that was our last August Excessive Heat Warning before this year. Was that also the year JFK had 42 75+ dewpoints?
  22. Hey Chris how do you find what the highest heat index ever recorded was for a given location, say, JFK?
  23. But we dont keep track of heat by heat index unfortunately. I can't even find what the highest heat index ever recorded for JFK was. To me the best raw measure of heat is number of 90 degree highs.
