Christmas Eve/Christmas 2020 Arctic Express Snow Obs.
Jed33 replied to John1122's topic in Tennessee Valley
Here was our storm system this AM on satellite. Look at how sharp the back edge of the system was! I don’t ever recall such a well defined storm like that. It’s nearly perfect. Also looks like it was tilted for sure. Maybe feeling the NAO block? Anyway I thought this was cool. -

Got back home from my in laws in Bristol. I 81 was mostly fine with just some patchy snow here and there. The side roads were covered though. When I got back I see that we picked up about 3/4in in those heavy bands that pushed through. That brings my total for this storm to 4.25in. My in laws though really racked up as they had 7in! -

It’s just ripping here in Bristol VA at the in-laws right now! No joke I bet they’ve had an inch in 10 min! Super impressive The walkway you see was shoveled clear when we got here. Now it’s disappearing under the snow! Looks like they have a little more than 6in right now -

Just had an very heavy streamer come through Morristown but I wasn’t there to see it. I talked to a buddy who said it probably laid down another 1/2in! Instead I was driving through some pretty heavy off and on snow showers on the way to my in laws in Bristol. In some cases it was just about whiteout conditions! -

Just crossed the 3in mark but it’s winding down now. It has definitely been one of the best snowfalls I’ve ever seen! Temp is really going down now though I’m at 25 degrees! -

Have around 2in here in town so far and coming down so hard it’s like a fog of fine flakes! Everything including roads in the subdivision are covered now. Is this real, I feel like I’m dreaming, it’s a real live Christmas miracle! -

MRX getting aggressive on snowfall totals overnight! Must be looking at banding potential. The map they have looks nice for the eastern valley and their zfp grids look nice. For TRI they have a total snow accumulation of 3-9in! For Hamblen Co they have 2-6in!.- 847 replies

It’s actually posted on the previous page. It was a very nice run for sure. Probably the best yet by the euro. It looked similar to the rgem, just a little less.- 847 replies

I see you RGEM! I like that model a lot bc I have seen it get a lot of things right over the years. That said it seems a little overdone. I like that the 3k NAM has the same general idea though. Seems like an Arctic front with a 1050+/- hp pushing it along would line up more like this scenario. The NAM/GFS seems more like what you would expect with a 1035ish or so HP pushing it, and that looks to be true. The rgem has a high as strong as 1052 at one point that weakens to a 1047, while the gfs never gets stronger than 1047 and weakens it to around 1040. Could that difference could be the reason in the slower frontal passage on the gfs?- 847 replies

Ran into a brief snow shower on the way into work this morning. Nice to see, albeit very short lived.
-
It was also that way here in town earlier this evening and around 2 or so there was a brief sleet/graupel shower
-
I saw those clouds earlier and thought they were cool. I’ve seen them before in the winter months. Ironically it seems that maybe they coincide with times that we’ve either had snow on the ground or it was about to be? There was still a pretty good bit of snow in the shade around here this morning, but now only the most dense shade and a few eves and roofs in the shade have any left.

Oak Moon Upslope/ Upper Low Storm Obs
Jed33 replied to Holston_River_Rambler's topic in Tennessee Valley
@BhamParker Nice! You should consider moving up here. As you know you can’t beat this area for its beauty and for a location in the South, we actually get at least some snow every year. My parents live in Birmingham, so I know what it’s like firsthand during the winter down there. Thanks for the pics and updates!- 300 replies
