Look at how low the dew points are too. That has to be good for at least onset sleet until the dewpoint rises above freezing. I don’t know I’m grasping at straws here but seen that happen many times.

I guess I should go out of town more often! We’re on the way to Banff and Lake Louise for some skiing. Those 12z runs are coming in hot! Er uh Cold and snowy! If this pattern doesn’t produce something I don’t know what it’ll take. Big caution is the drought situation and the moisture content of systems underperforming, but hopefully the STJ is indeed waking up and will give us a much needed shot of moisture.

It was 13° this morning when I left my house at 5:15. I’m not sure if it went any lower or not. The clouds moved in so it may not have. We’re on the way to Banff and Lake Louise to ski and board this weekend. Currently in Chicago, where there’s probably 1-1.5in on the ground and the unused roads and runways are covered here. Anyways, I’ll be pulling for everyone to score tonight!

I saw a video of the snow squall but didn’t see the wreck. My goodness that’s right up there with one of the worst! You’d expect that if there was a ton of snow or ice but sometimes the smallest amount of ice sneaks up on you. Wow!

That contributed to that 2014-2015 season being one of the best that I’ve seen since we moved to E TN in 2011. That year we exceeded 20in total snowfall, but it didn’t really get going until late Jan and ramped up in Feb. and into March.

I think it was in 2015. The further N and W you went, the more they got to a point. The CAD worked for the valley but the foothills and mtns got blasted with WAA. It was literally snowing and in the 20’s in the valley and raining and 45-50 degrees in the foothills and mtns. I’m not sure what it did to the plateau at the top elevations? Some of the heaviest snow I had ever seen until the MLK day 2024 over running event, which had some similarities in the foothills and mtns but was not quite exactly the same.

Yes, I was noticing that. It’s already 19 here. Forecast low is 15. Thinking could be between 10-15 here

In our area it makes sense if there’s bands or streamers after one of these cold shots. For the Deep SE-yeah I ain’t got no explanation lol!

The west end of Morristown near MRX picked up a decent little dusting overnight. Nothing on my end of the county though. Skies cleared out and bottomed out at 18. When I just drove to the west side of town right now I noticed the snow started showing up more and more the further west that I went. I did notice a small streamer in that area around 5AM this morning. That area is somewhat favored in NW flow. It can do pretty well for the valley in these events.

Ha! My parents have one on Okaloosa island! Ft. Walton area. Kicking myself for not going down last year! To add to that post. They didn’t have any means to deal with it other than sand and a few good ole boys. The thing was where it fell on the sand, it took forever to melt! Now on the roads it melted on its on. Never would have guessed it. They didn’t have anything to compare it with, but it lasted a week on the beach in places especially flat areas slightly sloped back from the direct angle of the sun. Just completely unheard of!

That flu is no joke! Hope you get well soon John!

That was a good afd by MRX. They haven’t been as well written lately, but that’s probably bc there was nothing to talk about until now ha!

The end of the gfs was about to send it to. Had a 1060 parent HP in Canada and a 1055 in SE Montana.
-
Had a decent snow shower just now at the house and must have missed one while we were at church bc there is a small dusting in spots in the grass up next to the walkway here at the house.

Sorry to hear about your mom. I will be praying for her to get well.

That first system is around 138hrs. Finally got something in the 5-6 day window.

We have seen system after system fail to produce the modeled rainfall this Fall and Winter so far. Some, like the last one, just completely dried up as it got to us. This one feels and looks different though, so hopefully it’s the beginning of a change for us. As has been said, La Nina can be tough for our area to get precip at times, and I think that’s what we’ve been seeing. It looks like the Nina has met its demise now though, Hopefully!

That is good. We really need the rain! Seems like qpf has trended upward and that’s a great thing!

Well hello 18z GFS. This is the best run I believe we’ve seen this season. Happy hour delivered at least for now.

Sure enough Carver! It’s been documented not just here but in other places that orographic lift aided by Bays Mtn does this. I’m not sure an industrial plant could actually cause 2in to fall. Either he has no knowledge of the phenomenon and/or he has no knowledge of how orographic lift works. Crazy! Speaking of bands, I noticed earlier that it looked like a second one tried to form in South Knox into Blount Co. I’m not sure about that one. Don’t know that I’ve seen it before. It doesn’t really look like it’s still going, so it could have been something like River effect, Lake effect, steam plant, etc.?

21 this morning and a very light dusting on the cars outside. Still some flurries floating around and I see the Bays Mtn. Band is still going albeit has shifted ever so slightly. I’d be willing to bet someone around there has some actual accumulation. The problem is it’s such a small area. It does look like it crosses over I-81 though so maybe there’s someone who could tell us? Edit: I see reports on social media of the grass being white and some roadways dusted. So, yeah it’s legit. Looks like it’s been going for 13hrs!

Stepped outside just now and noticed a few flurries. Looked at the radar and noticed the infamous Bays Mtn. Snow band has set up!! I’m not sure if it ever got going last year? At any rate, sure enough there she be!

This is very true for West TN especially the further south and west you go. Memphis is notorious for it. I lived in that area and in N MS for 30yrs with the exception of 5yrs spent in Jackson, MS. I’ve seen so many ice storms. I really hope I never see another one. I’ve seen some of the worst ones and the damage done from them. My grandfather and the older generation used to call the bad ones “Ice-breakdowns”. The name says it all. The February 1994 ice storm is in a league of its own and I hope it’s never repeated again. Some places around N MS had 6-8 in of pure freezing rain. An ungodly amount of ice buildup. Memphis had 2-3in itself. That much ice is hard to describe it’s just devastating! Sleet by itself is also hard to come by, but Memphis also manages to do that better than any place I’ve ever lived as well. I’ve seen 4in of pure sleet and many “concrete mixes” as it’s sometimes called with 2-4in amounts of freezing rain, sleet, and snow mixed. That is unbelievably hard to get around in. You better hope you get an inch or two of snow on top to help with traction for the first day, but when that melts a little from the sun and refreezes into a block of ice, it’s bad, really bad! Hopefully we all get 100% snow this year, and don’t have to see an ice storm. I love snow, but I would like to pass on the ice storms please.

That’s a really nice look!
