Chicago Storm

I really have not disliked the dry and mild conditions over the last couple weeks.  It has allowed the street and sidewalk construction at the end of my street to be completed.  I live near the end of a dead end street.  They just installed a hammerhead turnaround, which will make it much easier for trucks to turn around, including snow plows.  There was a port-o-potty on my property, which was finally removed yesterday.

It's sick how much snow they're getting even Moscow has like 26" otg. And they have a slightly warmer climate than Detroit. Worst since 1970 per the news.

Moscow is not warmer than Detroit. It is significantly colder, moreso in the summer but winters are colder too. The mean daily maximum in January is only 25.0F, which is less than the mean daily mean [average of max & min] for Detroit (25.8F), with the daily mean being 5F colder (20.8F). For the year, it's way colder. The normal annual mean is 3.6F colder than even Minneapolis. A normal year in Moscow (43.3F) is 0.7F colder than the coldest year ever recorded in Detroit (44.0F, in 1875).

The difference is greatest in the late summer. The normal August in Moscow is 2.2F colder than the record coldest August in Detroit (65.9F, 1915) and the normal September is a full 4F coldest than the record coldest in Detroit (57.4F, in 1918).

January 14

1981: Over 24,000 Canada Geese are present at Silver Lake in Rochester.

1952: A sleet and freezing rain storm develops across Minnesota from St Cloud south into Iowa. 1,100 Northwestern Bell telephone wires are knocked down. The Buffalo Ridge in the Pipestone area is the hardest hit with ¾ inches of solid ice on Northern State Power wires with icicles to 3 inches. Northwestern Bell reported ice up to 1 ½ inches on their wires in the same area. Thunder and a shower of ice pellets accompanied the storm in New Ulm and Mankato. Minneapolis General Hospital treated 81 people, victims of falls on icy streets.

Was just thinking....those poor fish getting carpet bombed by goose turds. 24k is a little much.

This is the Sea of Okhotsk in mid Feb 2012. I did my senior year of high school in Vladivostok and went up to Petropavlovsk for a a few days.

It’s pretty landscape but in general far eastern Russia is a depressing place lacking much modern infrastructure and kind of ignored by the federal government.
