Bump because its so so good

lol thank you. I even use it all the time to look back at a storm or season real quick or to filter for regions/amounts.

I still update the site almost daily with new things and when theres a big addition or update i keep a running log of that. So if you ever want to see whats new/added you can check that out

This is always a work in progress and i have a lot of plans for 2026. Including (not limited to), revising seasonal snowfall maps + 95-99 seasons, adding Tri-State to seasonal snowfall, more historic level storms pre-1994, updating all historic storms and including "Lower Northeast" wide view maps and adding N. MA and S. NJ only events that didn't make the archive...and more.

I'm almost done with 94-95 season and should have that completed within the next week, that's what im working on right now. Then the main archive will be totally complete.

If you or anyone else ever sees any major mistakes or dead links let me know. There's over 400 unique pages on the site so it can be hard to keep everything clean, organized and working properly.

This is really great. I was looking for Jan '94 and that's not up but maybe you're working your way back, but also not sure how much data even exists from back then. Really a terrific resource!

April Fools 1997…. The appendage in Plymouth County…. I was 6 but remember having more than 14” in Brockton. Can anyone confirm? Deny?

Could definitely be an under report Brockton CO-OP. I could definitely remove it if you think it seems low, and based on the surrounding reports, it does.

Oh boy, big news...after nearly 3 years and thousands of hours, i can finally say the Winter Storm Archive is now completed through 1994. There are currently 294 storms (and counting) in the archive with snowfall maps, radar, surface/upper air maps and more. I just finished Feb 4th, 1995 and uploaded everything for the entire 94-95 season (which is not much). I made a bunch of improvements for desktop and mobile and everything should be working perfectly but if there are any problems with the links or there are errors let me know. Winter 25-26 storms are being added as they happen, about a week after the fact and there are currently 9 storms that made it into the archive as 3"+ events.

https://www.jdjweatherconsulting.com/storm-archive

I have a lot plans and additions to the site coming in 2026 which include:

  • Adding season snowfall for 94-99
  • Updating/redoing all the seasonal maps for 99-24 for SNE/Tri-State/CT
  • Refreshing all historic storms maps and adding Lower Northeast (SNE+Tri-State) to all of them (2020-2026 are done)
  • Adding all snowfall maps that didn't make the archive to snowfall maps pages. Either if they are less than 3" or only affected N MA/S NJ (94-02 is done)
  • More historic snowstorms to be added from before 1994 back to 1800s.

There's probably more but that's all i can think of right now. If you haven't been to the site in a while and want to see what is new/added you can check out the updates page where i keep a log of everything new.

it's there now. limited number of reports as there was no cocorahs at the time and NWS wasn't doing snowfall PNS yet...so it's just COOP and climo sites to go off of. But its up with radar/sfc/snowfall maps.

@ORH_wxman @CoastalWx Any thoughts on this one? Brockton, MA snow total from 4/1/97?

Reports were tough to come by back then, all we had was essentially COOP and climate sites. NWS just had started doing public information statements during the 96-97 winter. BOX did not do them 95-96. I just wanted to showcase the insane difference of reports now vs 30 years ago when we were essentially pre-internet era (i know dial up existed). It makes doing these analysis maps so much more difficult and time consuming but way more accurate and i am grateful for the huge network of spotters and various programs we have in the 2020s.

It's odd because we had reports in our RICONN wx observation network from PVD

which Jan 94? I see theres Jan 3-4, Jan 7-8 and jan 17-18 1994 on Rays WS Archive. The main archive stops at 94-95 so i wont be doing 93-94 storms unless its a big one, then theyll go in the Historic Snowstorms section. Just havent got to many of them yet. There is 7 so far pre 1994 season.

I misread the thing i quoted i thought he said 95.

I looked hard but NADA. I have a couple of newsletters but summer editions. Literally hundreds of observers from RI Conn Mass. This was the form I  used

I’d toss Brockton. They had 14.0” listed in new snow on 3/31 but nothing after that. On the April form they had no new snow listed and only reported depth. The depth for 4/1 was 18”. They had 0” going into the storm. So there’s data that doesn’t jive.

I’ll also add we had probably  32-34” in Hyde Park on the west side of BOS. I didn’t had a yard stick, but used a piece of wood strapping to gauge. I still remember walking around and looking at how deep it is. I have pics I think still in the snowstorm memories are my pics from that storm.

Logan flipped over around 00z after battling mixed precip but we had like 8” already where I was. Elevated too around 200’.

Totally under measured as it was the 24 hr method. I bet 3 foot plus coops had up to 4.5 inches qpf

Key Snowfall Totals (March 31 – April 1, 1997)

Milford, MA: 36 inches

Worcester, MA: 33–34.5 inches

Jaffrey, NH: 27 inches

Boston, MA (Logan Airport): 25.4 inches

Burrillville, RI: 30.5–31 inches

Shrewsbury, MA: 30 inches

Cranston, RI: 24 inches

Westfield, MA: 24 inches

Providence, RI (Downtown): 19.5 inches

You mentioned "it was the 24 hour method"? How are you measuring these days, do you clear the board ever 6 hours? It's the constant debate whether we should clear every 6 or 24 hours and in the last NWS guidance @NorthShoreWx and I have found the 6 hour method is out for hobbiests like ourselves.

That's my understanding.  FAA requires airport observers to measure and report every 6 hours and then start over.  All others pay cash.
