On Day 5, after skinning up the serpentine wall, we crossed a glacier, did another technical climb, and then skinned up the Pigne d'Arolla which had views of the Italian and Swiss Alps (you can see the French Alps from there too). This photo (bottom photo) looks east towards the Matterhorn. Frankly, one of the most spectacular spots imaginable (even when shared with 20-30 others!) The other photo (middle) is day #6, looking at the 'west' side of the Matterhorn. It took us 2+ hours to descend from the Col de Valpeline (3,500m) past the Matterhorn to reach the outskirts of the Zermatt ski area where we stopped had one of the best beers of my life. The Matterhorn looks very different from the different sides - not surprisingly but we are so use to seeing the photo below from the village of Zermatt.

Not kidding. The views are spectacular. I was up on top of Zermatt in August. Beer and food was spectacular. I sat outside at mid-mountain with views of Matterhorn in front of me.

Chez Vrony? (what a place!)

Nice morning at mount Snow yesterday.  Nice powder day close to my house. Toasted my Achilles last run hopefully it’s not a big deal. I can walk with little pain so that’s good.   Got a few more ski days lined up after our vacation to Tennessee.

There’s so much snow still on the hill for this time of year.

The depth data of the 3k and 3.9k sites are above average.

The decrease in snowpack depth this time of year is crazy.  Every 1,000 vertical feet can mean feet of snow melt as you descend.

It goes like 91” to 67” to 30” to 0-12” every thousand feet to the base.

  • 3 weeks later...

Great couple days at Jay Peak and Sugarbush.  Rained the whole way north Friday, when I pulled in the lot it stopped.  The rest of the day was a nice mix of sun and clouds.  Skied in a light sweatshirt.  Still plenty of coverage in the woods. Jay Peak Ski patrol even dropped a few ropes for me and the 10 other people who were out on the hill.  Natural snow was really nice, manmade was ok.
Sugarbush yesterday was super fun first thing in the morning.  Sun was out briefly but by 10 the rain drops started falling.  Did quite a few laps but the leg was getting a little sore due to my injury a few weeks back. Once the heavy fog rolled in and it started pouring it was time to go.  All in all a nice quick but fun trip!

I didn't realize it but the group that purchased Burke includes Jon Schaefer from Berkshire East.  He sent out an email a little while ago that they'll have a whole new snowmaking system ready for next year.  Should be beneficial to the mountain and the local community I would think.

I’ve never met him, but Jon Schaefer’s reputation is a guy who can get things done… within the financial constraints he operates within.  He gets the core vibe too.
