Cold Pool Storms 8/5/15

The anomalous upper level low continues to slowly drift eastward across southern Canada and during the day on Wednesday yet another fairly strong piece of s/w energy will rotate through the fast mid-level flow aloft.  As the core of the upper level low continues to slide east we will see some very unseasonably cold mid-level temperatures ranging from around -14C to -18C (coldest as you move towards northern New England) overspread the region.

As typical with these cold pool setups, moisture will be a concern and will be much more limited than what was available today.  However, computer guidance suggests that enough moisture may be available so when coupled with increasing lift and weak instability we may see some isolated to widely scattered showers and t'storms develop during peak heating, especially the further north you go.

Given the anomalous mid-level cold, we will see rather low freezing levels so any t'storms that develop will have the potential to produce small hail and some of the strongest cores will have the potential to produce large hail (1''-1.25'') in diameter.  Given inverted-v look on some soundings, gusty winds will also be possible.

The highest potential seems to be confined to much of ME, VT, NH, and northern MA, however, the entire region can't be ruled out for some isolated activity.

2nd heavy though brief shower in the past hour here in Augusta, probably 0.3-0.4" total.  1st one had thunder and heavier rain, heard none from #2, which center of precip slid just to our north.  Looks like the homefront got a cent or two from a dying cell after a much juicier one passed 5 or so miles to the N.  Some small but bright echoes upstream, so who knows how the shooting gallery will finish.

Very localized here....as in I drove to the center of Stowe village to the bank and it was absolutely pouring with water running down the streets. When I got home 10 minutes later and only 1-2 miles away, everything was dry with not a drop.

But temps have been quite jumpy all day...from like 63F to 76F depending on clouds and Precip.
