Site "issues"

Recommended Posts

Had a long post about spending more money if needed to make the site work right during big events as it's become as unreliable now as it's predecessor...hit post new topic and appropriately got the message that I get in storms our out so often now:

An error occured with the SQL server:

This is not a problem with the IPS Community Suite but rather with your SQL server. Please contact your host and copy the message shown above.

my browser still gets stuck for 5 minutes at times because of these banners....enough with the banners...you guys made enough $ from the donations alone.

or if you guys know anything about bypassing from making people wait.....then load them in an iFrame.    Makes the page load without needing to wait for the banner to load first.

It sucks guys and gals...no bones about it. I'm not the IT guy here, but we feel our hardware is fine. The hunch is that it is software related. We're working to find solutions and at least temporary work-arounds for this system. I'm not sure if this software can handle 3k people refreshing every other second during model runs.

Many apologies to those who use the model center too. We'll make it up to you.

Just to give everyone one the latest news on this, we've hired a networking specialist to thoroughly review our setup and re-work it so we can adequately handle the traffic we've experienced with this storm.  Our incoming traffic has been something we've never experienced, lighting up so many regions.  Every time a new model run started up, we got hammered with everyone refreshing often.

What we'll end up with is a truly professional setup with adequate redundancy so in case on our our servers does falter, we'll have another ready to keep the show going.

As Brian (dendrite) said, we will certainly make it up to everyone.  Thanks for your patience everybody. :)

It's not a huge deal but a free month at the beginning of next winter would be great...not a jelly of the month club Griswald type offering :)

Thanks for working on it.

well, whatever you guys disabled during Storm Mode fixed it.

but now it's all frozen again.  can't even browse these forums with FireFox anymore.  Freezes everytime.

When is it freezing?  If I can figure out what add-on could be hanging you up I can probably fix it.

As soon as it starts to initially load a forum section.

http://www.americanwx.com/bb/

or

http://www.americanwx.com/bb/index.php/forum/25-philadelphia-region/

seems to happen immediately, upon trying to load the page. So i'm guessing it's Ad related.   This is the only site that does it..and it happens on both computers.

some ad networks are like that, and will freeze the browser if they can't get the access they want. (cookie, malware, or whatever)

Using Avast anti-virus.

My FireFox privacy settings :

It doesn't happen every single time, but around 60% to 70% of the time.    Try to use those settings all day, and you'll most likely notice it.

Could just be 1 or 2 shady Ads that occasionally float into the network.

Add-on wise, I had Ad Block Plus installed...but it was disabled.  All Add-Ons = currently disabled.

Hmm.. possibly, but ads continued to run even with performance mode on, which you say it stopped when it was enabled.  I use google DFP that scans all ads for potential malware, adware, or general "shadiness" before they're displayed.

So is it Avast that's catching something?

No type of virus / malware notifications ever popping up.  But it does freeze firefox to the point where it crashes and I have to restart it.

I brought up the 'shadiness' factor of Ad networks...knowing how their run as well as i'm sure you do.    Whenever a bad ad is detected, I usually immediately contact the network to notify them (if their displayed on any of my sites) ....but as usual, they typically try to behave innocently like they were completely oblivious to the fact that there was a bad ad, malware or whatever mixed in there somewhere.

But yea, with this issue I have no idea where to go from here.   I detailed everything on my end.  Might update my Adobe Flash, maybe that's causing the issue.

It's the thing that sucks in these instances, we need to micro-analyze every little aspect.  (from Admin to Admin)

I adjusted my firefox privacy settings to match yours and have been unable to replicate the issue you're experiencing. Although, now that you mention it, I was having forum issues related to adobe flash yesterday on my home PC. It wasn't freezing, but I'd get a popup saying flash had crashed and asking if I'd like to reload the page. I think disabling the ads via an ad-blocker fixed the issue.

I'll add that firefox version 11 doesn't have the flash issue. Just the latest release, from what I've seen.

There is a video based ad I've been trying since November.. but I think it's a jquery-based platform,  I haven't been performing well and may drop it.  How long has the freezing been occurring?

BTW, all ads run with async code now so they don't slow down load times.

It could of been since November.  At-least for a month now.

That's why i'm surprised others haven't been complaining.

it's starting to get ridiculous.

you should just remove all plugins and start from scratch.

I switched to IE, and now IE is messed up.   have to hit submit 2 to 3 times just to get something posted.

I put stuff inbetween quote tags, and they don't get quoted.   need to edit everything 2 to 3 times just to get it to display right.   (and wow, look at that now my text is tiny)

you guys can take the 'nuisance' plugin off me now..

  • 6 months later...

I understand the need for banner ads for some of the revenue. but could someone be sure whoever is feeding the ads that they are either coded properly and/or from "white-listed" sources? last several days, I have had webroot "secure anywhere" (the latest version of spysweeper a-v/a-s) going nuts about ads on the board being from suspect if not potentially harmful sources.

thanks.

For $10 a year you can get rid of all the ads.

I only use reputable ad networks. I only have a couple of them currently feeding ads to the site, one being Google Adsense, and use 2 ad sizes.  What is Webroot's ad doing unlike the others?

Doesn't matter how reputable they are. They all get hacked. While they have gotten better over the years they still have it happen constantly. Why i use adblock plus. I typically avoid websites with ads but as all knows it is near impossible so when i do visit one with them i have that just in case.

The better way is selling ad space on here. It is a high traffic website so it can command a decent price.

Just checked and I am signed in. Who knows....it's annoying!

Not a user of Tapatalk but I only have one ad that is fixed on the bottom of the mobile skin, but not viewable to subscribers.  Is it this one?  If not, could it be Tapatalk's ad?

Let me monitor it and let you know. Today of course it's not happening...lol.

It's some animation scrolling but I can't remember of it was bottom or top banner.

Maybe they knew you were coming and it went away!
