January 2004 is also still recent enough that we really need something close to that to get impressed. We had pretty impressive cold in '05 too...but since then, most cold outbreaks have been like -20 type days. Jan 2009, early Jan 2008, and now this January. January 2004 cold was more impressive in many of our backyards than January 1994 unlike everyone else in the northeast/midwest outside of New England. We won't match it any time soon I don't think.

January 2011 one day shot was pretty impressive, but it was only one day. This year didn't reach the -25 type departures, though we did get the historic cold in the snowstorm. Never have seen that type of cold in a snowstorm. So that was pretty special.

Yeah I'm still jaded by that year. I mean that was just so impressive.....the area was at a standstill in terms of outdoor work. Nothing was done and basically people were out of work for like 2-3 weeks.

Well the meh was more because of Islip's short period of records. I thought the torches have been

Impressive. Each cutter has brought near 60F temps. How is that not impressive? Wait until Saturday night tickles upper 50s. Basically when it has been cold it's cold and when we warm we are dam warm.

60° is impressive in its own right, but I only saw that on 12/23.  On Monday I only reached 55° and it's been warmer than that in January before.   I was looking back at my own records and since 11/30 I've had more temperatures be the coldest in 29 years than be the warmest.  If it was more even, then yes, the torches would be impressive but for me, the number of cold periods stand out.

We can all speculate but at the end of the month we'll know where this month will wind up in the record and have a good idea where the winter is going to wind up.

Yeah I see what you mean, but we've seen colder. Just nothing too impressive really except for 1/2. But, it's been cold overall no doubt.

Dependzs on where one looks.  CAR was -33 on Jan 2, BGR -26 (and -27 on 12/17.)  Compared to my 16-yr records, Jan 1-4 were all -26 to -29, and 12/17 was -31.

The Jan 2004 cold was remarkable for its maxima more than coldest mornings, with many locations challenging all time records for daily highs.  Below are the lowest maxima at the Farmington COOP since records began in 1893:

-11   12/30/1917

-11   1/9/68

-8   2/13/67

-8   1/14/2004

-6   1/19/1897

-6   12/26/80

-6   1/5/81

-6   1/15/2004

Well the Maine (esp interior) standard devs are a bit higher than down here. So I'm not surprised in any given year when you have a -25 day...or on the flip side have monster positives.
