What met can describe this unstable layer and what to look for on the sounding etc

 

Yeah. So notice at 850mb the parcel is saturated. Lets pretend from that point the parcel would rise moist adiabatically. It would follow the shape of those curved purple lines that curve to the left. The actual parcel sounding is in blue. Now here is where you can see the parcel is unstable. Pretend the parcel at 850 would follow the curve of that purple line. If you imagine it, you can see how the parcel would be to the right, or warmer than the actual environmental sounding in blue. That means the parcel is unstable as it is warmer than the environment and it will continue to rise....probably to 450 or 400mb just eyeballing it.

it's a MAUL. translate that into the best snow growth temps and that's why NJ into VT got 2'
