Lookout Posted April 5, 2011 Share Posted April 5, 2011 just went outside and looked northwest to view the lightning.The winds are the best in a long time, probably had a gust to 50, and its still partly cloudy here. Debris flying everywhere. Yeah the winds this evening have been far better than today here. Had a gust to 46mph twice but it's actually backed down a little bit now with the edge of the line just about on top of me. Interestingly, I will be very near where the line changes shape/bends to the right. Will be interesting to see if it means anything of significance when it moves through. But of course the atlanta curse has struck as predicted. The line weakened noticeably after it crossed over i-85 over the northeast sections of the state. Only the very strong southerly flow has kept this part of the line a little stronger here. A little bit of bowing over the upstate over the last half hour or so. Its knocking on my door Your about to get nailed....bet you get 50-70 mph straight line winds that segment is really getting its act together right in time to hammer you. Lookout Posted April 5, 2011 Share Posted April 5, 2011 Wowsers..spoke too soon..winds spiked up big time right after making that post. 55mph gust! Flag pole is bending like crazy even without the flag (and it's reenforced with a inner pipe). Winds across the street sounded really vicious..there are some large peacon trees there and they sounded like they might have been breaking..but not sure. I hope not they are over 125 years old. Its knocking on my door Forest City got rocked by that cell and it looks like it's been strengthening a little more...Getting some bright flashes of lightning showing up back west and wind gusts kicking up to 25, and that's only the beginning... I might get hit straight on. Just spent 5 minutes outisde and could barely stand most of the time, and everytime there is lightning you can see the clouds zipping. Amazing night. MAJOR straight line winds wrapped up in that cell that just passed Forest City (In bostic here) Large 50-60' Ceder tree down in my front yard!!! Chopped it off like it was nothing. As it hit , the cell had small sized hail.. Holy crap folks!! Watch out down stream!! A cop stopped and turned his lights on near those trees I was talking about..he got out of his car and was doing something but the rain was starting to come down and couldn't make out what he was doing. I'm assuming trying to get a limp off the road or something. Heard limbs coming down everywhere I think. Winds are backing off a little bit now but there was no doubt winds in excess of 60mph for a time. Probably 70 over across the road on the north side of the field where the winds have nothing to slow them down before reaching those trees. There are numerous storm damage reports just a few miles from me. People were making remarks about a bow echo in the storm as it approached the exact areas where damage reports are coming in from over on facebook of some friends of mine in the area. Also storm showed rotation as it continued on over the Austell/Mableton Ga area on wsbtv/wxia/fox5. The storm reports are coming in from Riverside Pkwy in Douglasville, and just into Lithia Springs. Large hail fell for about a minute. High winds, but I can not confirm how strong the winds were. I know that I could hear them coming directly from the WSW of me. The area near Light Oak in Cleveland county looks to be the heaviest of that cell and is aiming for my house here. Filmed it for about 3 mins. with my Powershot Canon Digital Camera. I had the camera going rightafter I heard it pickup ferociously and went outside. Just now reviewing it. There's only 2 other wind episodes here that beat that speed since I've lived at this house since 2003, and that would be the 2004 high winds of March and the January 2006 low level jet episode. The lightning continues here and picked up almost half inch of rain in just a few minutes, I didn't realize that, with all the wind action. Winds have calmed considerably. I know what you mean about running from door to door in the dark as I was doing the same. I keep the lights off in the house in situations like this and the The lightning knocked out the yard light, as well as all of the other yard lights around and it was pitch black except for the lightning and the cops lights..which trust me added to the effect lol. It was very intense but very cool. He did leave after 3 or 4 minutes though. While I was doing that, two smaller limps hit the roof and they scared the crap out of me. Now that they are back on I don't see any thing large though thankfully but I have no idea what has happened nearby. I'd be shocked if there wasn't some trees down...that was about the loudest I have ever heard wind roaring through the trees across the road and across the other side of the field. It is KILLING me this wasn't during the day so I can judge it properly but it sure sounded like things were breaking/crashing. It's about an 1/8th of a mile away and it's hard to say for sure over the loudness of the wind in the yard. Amazing that just about as soon as the rain started though the wind dropped back down to virtually nothing more than a light breeze. No hail here but did have some heavy rain of course. Way better than I ever thought it would be for sure given this area's luck with lines though.
