BTW the other thing 1996 was famous for was the heat in the middle portion of May. I believe we hit 96 and Islip hit 98! That was the hottest it got all year.

20/21 of May in '96 saw 96 , 93 at NYC. Rest of the summer was cool especially July. Certainly not rooting for this scenario.

Hey BW how do you compare last summer to 1966 for us? We were also transitioning from an el nino (1965-66) to a la nina. Would this summer be comparable to 1967?

That's an interesting analog also.

El Nino to La Nina pattern. A hot summer and a 51.5 inch snowfall winter followed by a cooler summer.

1966 was a big recurve year followed by some tropical activity for the MA

the next summer.

Early heatwaves appear common after La Nina winters...not always but they happen quite a bit...1974, 1996, 2001 and 2009 all say oppressive heatwaves in April or May....1989 had a heatwave in late March and early April too.

The April 1976 heatwave really stands out in my memory.

Well if that stands out, so should 2002 :P It was every bit its equal and occurred on almost the same dates with almost the same temps lol. As a matter of fact we almost had a four day April heatwave that year.

I love very hot summers too. Seeing a 100 degree day is as much fun as watching a hurler throw a 100 mph fastball..... you know you're seeing something special. I always associate super hot days with great baseball. Last summer was like a perfect game! I hope Mother Nature hurls heat at us all summer long :P Anyone who likes cool summers belongs in the Little Leagues ;)

lol ok enough with all the baseball analogies.

54 ---- 90 plus degree days and several 100 plus degree days in NYC metro last year was a little too extreme IMO -was the exact opposite of the previous year when there were only a small percentage.of 2010's totals...............

Just that 2002 was no surprise for me after that non-winter.arrowheadsmiley.png

1976 had an even bigger warm up from January to February

than we had this year.January 1976 made it down to -1 at

NYC.

2002 though quickly went into the crapper after that til August....I remember Albany got 6 inches of snow on May 13th or something ridiculous...I drove through late in the afternoon and there was nothing on the ground since it melted within 6 hours of falling, I didnt know til almost 2 years later that it had even snowed that morning there.

2002 did somehow end up being a really hot summer with the quantity of 90 and 95 degree days, I believe it was close to a record at JFK.

2000, 2001, 2003, and 2004 all had cold Julys...July 2000 I believe was the only spring or summer month to be in the top 10 coldest for NYC post 1930 I believe when it happened, since then July 2001 and 2009 have followed ...even 2002 while it was above average for July was quite cold the first 20 days or so...July 2004 for most of the nation was the coldest July on record other than 1992....all of them though outside of 2000 and 2004 saw a relatively solid turnaround for August...2003 of course found the absolute worst possible day in August to have the hottest day of the summer....2000 I think there was a heatwave in early September if I remember correctly though it was 2-3 days at most and not sure most places really got above 85-88 but it was still warmer than most days that summer.

Haha hey now SG I loved that blackout in Aug 2003- how amazing was it to have all the lights out for 12-24 hrs for 55 million people!

June 2009 was cool around here but you have to go a ways back for a really chilly November.

1972?

And as far as the opening post goes, I think 1956 may be the closest fit, since that was a snowy strong La Niña following a scorching summer, during a long-term negative NAO period. 1967 was a weak La Niña following another neutral to weak La Niña summer, the winter in between also being neutral-negative. The only part of that that makes a good fit is that 1966 was a hot summer, and 1965 was a moderate El Niño. 1996 was also a summer following a weak La Niña.

I suspect we may be back to the 1950's in terms of having back-to-back relatively hot La Niña summers. While 1952 was an El Niño, 1953-1956 were all hot La Niña summers.

In your scenario, the uptick in east coast tropical activity would still apply.

Summer of 1992 and 2009 FTW.

Those were both El Niño summers. As far as 1992's and 1967's temperatures, my memory serves me that volcanic activity helped depress the temperatures, as well as in the slightly less cool summer of 1981.

Cool weather in the summer is boring :P I'd rather see the sun go supernova LOL

Right,June 1972 was on the cool side and we had Agnes to contend with.

Your 1956 temperature analog matches up with the idea of a cooler

summer following a hot summer.

I'd like it if we figured out the secret to the 11 year pattern-- it doesnt hold true all the time but it happens often enough.... 1933,44,55,66,77,88,99,2010,.......

If it's a solar influence why are we more sensitive to it than other areas? Some kind of connection to the AO/NAO?
