  1. Happens more often than not....March 2018 was painful around here...even in Jan the bomb cyclone was unimpressive. Most of the time, in my experience, the totals are overdone. Once in awhile they hit it, bit more often than not, a number of areas see less than forecast. And 5 inches is really a bust for you. But I don't believe most of NJ is gonna see 20 inches. If it flips back you'll probably pick up some more. Right now, that sleet is persisting, and until I see evidence otherwise, I don't expect much more. Now, someone will jump on my case here, and that's fine. If I knew the future, I'd have won the mega millions ( or billion! ).
  2. Indeed. But that sleet out there is wicked sounding. There's some snow mixed in at times. Its waffling. Might change back. Who knows. I'm done cleaning for today. Not going out again. Especially not in stinging sleet.
  3. Saw that in Jan 2011; wound up with 19 total. It actually rained for a period in that storm, then went to sleet and later back to snow. So it can happen. I too have forgotten how longer events can unfold, again with so many progressive patterns in recent years.
  4. If its rain and sleet, I would tend to think, based on experience, our bigger accumulation chances are largely over in those regions....damn sleet is always under-predicted. Still a nice storm with a ways to go. Still who would turn their noses up at 12+? After the last 3 years?
  5. Back to snow here after brief period of sleet, but intensity has dropped off. Oop as I write it just went back to sleet. Can hear it.
  6. Directly across from SI... right on the water. Small town with an urban feel. Shares some municipal services with Woodbridge.
  7. First sleet of daylight over here. Lighter band now. Haven't bothered to measure. Cleaned about 7-9 this morning at 6 am, just cleaned another 4-6...
  8. How shall we celebrate your coming 50,000th post? Maybe a ticket to a ski resort in Argentina in July? Bariloche?
  9. It was not a widespread slow down but " some" workers did work slower....the major reason for the snafu was on the city management, which delayed declaring an emergency, allowing too many people to park on the street. This was the major reason for the difficulty cleaning up. it also allowed buses to operate, many were stranded blocking intersections and streets.
  10. Reminds me of Boxing Day in the metro region, though that storm plastered coastal areas with the worst ( I think Brick had 36 inches, as did Elizabeth ). It just kept pivoting over the city IIRC.
  11. You still use a shovel? God bless you man. I've got a few snowblowers ( long story ) and neighbors asking to borrow; I've told them yes, but I'm not offering tutorials during a pandemic.
  12. That has been reported; I don't remember the sleet, because it was such a wicked and long, and at the time, shocking storm. Seen a few storms nearly as big since then....
  13. The sociology of the school system is in place as much to provide a safe place for kids while parents work ( "in loco parentis " ) as it is for anything else, as we are painfully learning. Likewise, there is little justification to bring many workers to the office when weather is bad, as many things in the financial and tech fields can be done from home. But this also means frontline workers of all stripes bear the brunt of things. Let's all wish them well as they are out there today so that we can stay home safely, whether it's first responders, utility workers, healthcare providers, grocery workers or delivery people.
  14. Covid will and has changed some things permanently. This always happens in history with pandemics. The Renaissance, the Roaring 20's, are two examples. One thing that is gone is the snow day, but that was happening anyway, as districts in the aughts and 2010's were blowing up too many snow days, and were already petitioning to use remote before all this happened; they were mostly rebuffed until recently.
  15. A friend works at the mall; he reported sleet in Bridgewater for a time but heavy snow now.
  16. Maybe its good I got out this morning and cleared some of it; I'm estimating 6-8 so far, hard to tell with drifts; flat areas only had 4-5 but it was plenty deep elsewhere; over a foot on the drift on my car.
  17. Yeah it doesn't have the look of an 18-20 incher to me: but this is longer duration than storms we've had in recent years, which were quicker and heavier IIRC. We've not seen sleet here since daybreak; not sure what happened over night; it is snowing steadily but not "puking" as some would characterize it.....I already had some pretty heavy duty drifts this morning that challenged the machinery; so can't really complain. We'll see what Act 2 has to offer....
  18. Suggests he might be in a temporary situation. Belford is on Raritan Bay, near Atlantic Highlands. It is the seat of the northern fishing fleet, what's left of it anyway.
  19. Still it might be wise to do some cleaning up in anticipation of later precip, come what may. waiting for a little more light.
  20. Wow. Belford is not " down the shore" its Raritan Bay, a few miles across from SI. No question that is very concerning. With sleet seen well into west central NJ already, one can't help but wonder. Still, everyone seems confident of a massive amount of snow coming.
  21. So this lull is temporary then....sounds like a good time to do some cleanup while the opportunity exists....
  22. Are we in a lull or is this the dry slot NWS was hinting out? They mention something in Mt Holly, but did not seem to think it would be persistent, if I read correctly.
