Was outside with the dogs, had a sweatshirt, winter hat, gloves and a jacket on. It was freezing 40-45 with a stout NE wind. Went into eat and take a shower, got dressed went back outside in like 90 min and it felt like someone turned on the sauna, 70/60 (77/65 now) . I've never felt it get that warm and that humid that quick before. HRRR showing 4-600 m2s2 now around here. Gonna go sit and watch somewhere off to my SSE. Chasing is futile with these storm speeds -

Really weird. The gust front/shelf cloud has literally stalled overhead for the last 30-45 min. As that northern edge took off and bowed to the NNE the SW part of the front seems to have stalled for a moment. They forecasted this to happen but much earlier in the day. The actual rain is training a mile W of me to the NE. I've had a few big drops thats it. Its like I'm on the storm railroad crossing lol.

Pfffft...Fooey... for MBY. Just as I thought. Just as is always. Big scary photogenic shelf cloud, a clap of thunder and a gust of wind. As always everything splits North and South. Maybe next time..... for the 100th time lol.

Spring 2025 Medium/Long Range Discussion
Jackstraw replied to Chicago Storm's topic in Lakes/Ohio Valley
Yeah the GFS jumped on board with the EURO today cranking that low up. 30% on SPC Day 5 is pretty significant. -
Yeah, getting more and more unimpressed with this one than I was a couple days ago. Thought we had a slight chance of something locally because of a few things lining up with decent dew's here for the first time this year. Everything this Spring so far has come through at 3am after it's pissed it's vinegar. This ones starting to look like photogenic "scary" shelf cloud cool to look at storm lol. Potential small QLCS spin ups around here anyway. Better chances down around the river and south per usual. It is Spring so you ever know

2025 Short Range Severe Weather Discussion
Jackstraw replied to Chicago Storm's topic in Lakes/Ohio Valley
I'm starting to like Sunday for my neck of the woods. Its at least looking like we may get some energy coming through with some sunlight instead of pissing out at the IN/IL line. Lapse rates kinda iffy but there's some decent kinematics and backing winds along with a strengthening surface low moving through IN on the NAM. Some really nice HODO's in S IL and IN, especially along I70 and south and pretty significant SRH values. It's not the best but its the best look I've had in MBY so far this Spring. Might be thread worthy as we get into some HiRes land. -
All I got was the applause at a Kid Rock concert... one clap... of thunder lol

I lived right on the ocean in the SE for 30 years. I've had it with "wind events" lol. This season is starting just like last years. I'm too old to be running around 500-1000 miles to get a glimpse of one 20 miles away. I have graduated to a sit and wait chaser. If it comes it comes . (Plus there's just too many people out there now, it's ridiculous) -
Yes they are. I came over a hill while driving last year and there were 6 digging into a small deer. My little Integra was surrounded by these giant birds leaping into the air in a panic. Thought I drove into Jurassic park for a minute. I've always been fascinated by them because of the way they fly and how big they are. They're one of the largest birds you'll encounter around these parts with wingspans of 5-7ft. Interestingly they won't bother with anything thats been dead longer than 48 hours. So if you see them eating something technically you could still eat it (with some definite high temp cooking lol). They can smell a freshly dead mouse under a leaf from a 1k feet up. I grew up in southern CA and when I was a kid we would lay down out in a field and not move and within a couple of minutes a couple of Western Vultures would cruise over. We we're convinced they were gonna come down and pick our bones like some old Spaghetti Western movie lol. They are an amazing bird and they are protected.

First Turkey Vulture this past weekend. Should look like the skies over Berlin in 1945 pretty soon

Its been so long for some good storms around here it'd be like chasing a girl when I was 14. Wouldn't know what to do once I got one

Went to check on a couple of my favorite local fishing spots today, couple of 100+ year old spring fed gravel pits. 1 is about 10 acres the other about 15. They are both 80 to 100 feet deep in spots. I was amazed, both still completely frozen over. They haven't been frozen completely over this late since I can remember. Not even 2017-18, there were significant areas of open water over the deeper pools even then. Not this year, they are still solid enough I chucked a baseball size rock as far as I could and it didn't break through. One of the pits I know where there's a shallow (maybe 3ft deep at high water) bar. Its the bed of the old road the vehicles drove on to get to the "pedestal" that the main shovel sat on in the middle and loaded them. Lots of gravel pits have these and if you know where they are can catch some 5lb'ers (thats big for my neck o the woods lol) by dropping a Texas Rig along them during really early spring. I usually start the first week of March, they've been spawning progressively earlier over the last 15 years. Well today, I walked out probably 50ft over that shallow bar and nary heard a crack (had my waders on lol). Probably coulda ice skated over it. I know its melting but man. Every creek and stream is still frozen except White River and it's still 100% in some areas but I've noticed its going pretty quick now here.. I'm really surprised how much ice is still around. Glad my heart won't let me ice fish anymore, that mighta been MN ice fishing this year... well may WI lol. On a side note, spring 2018 was one of the best Morel seasons in recent memory, lets hope this past deep freeze wakes them up, been pretty disappointing the last 2 years at least for me

Winter 2024-25 Medium/Long Range Discussion
Jackstraw replied to michsnowfreak's topic in Lakes/Ohio Valley
Haven't had Spring thunder (besides a passing rumbler) around here for at least 4 years. For that matter haven't had Summer thunder (besides above) for about 4 years either. I can prove it by the date on my dogs Xanax bottle. That Thunder Ice back in January was the best (and loudest) light show in years. Been nothing but serious fizzle domes above me in like forever.
