April 2022 temperature forecast contest
Roger Smith replied to Roger Smith's topic in Weather Forecasting and Discussion
Final scoring for April 2022 SEA required adjusted scoring as top raw score was 56. Most of the changes are small as the progression overlapped the raw scores most of the way. Scores marked ^ are adjusted to fit the progression. The lower half of the scores were higher (or same) on raw score than progression. Mid-Atlantic winter 2021-22 snowfall contest
Roger Smith replied to PrinceFrederickWx's topic in Mid Atlantic
That's good to know. Just out of interest, what are the latest measurable snowfall dates for the four airports? I think it would be last week of April for NYC and middle of May for Toronto so I am guessing maybe around now to 20th? Also last traces would be interesting to know. Those are about 2-3 weeks later for the places for which I have stats -- there was a trace of snow in Toronto last May 29th and the absolute latest is June 3rd. NYC is May 9th (2020 tied 1977). -

Colder air is moving south again but mostly into central and western regions with just leftover cool temperatures expected to reach the northeastern states. Past the immediate outlook period a more average sort of regime is indicated. There are a few minor changes to seasonal snowfall totals -- 32.6" ORD, 44.8" DTW, 95.3" BUF which will be incorporated into the table still over in the March thread. That will migrate over to this thread eventually. The snowfall season may have a bit left to give in a few locations, by the looks of recent model runs. 21st _ Trends continue up and down but rather cold in ORD and very cold for SEA (and here, we currently have light snow and a balmy 1 p.m. temp of 35F). Additional snow 0.2" ORD to 32.8", DTW 2.3" to 47.1", BUF 0.7" to 96.0" and BTV 4.2" to 70.7" with all others incl DEN no measurable new snow, some traces. Changes will be made to the contest scoring table located in the March thread. The table will be migrating over to this thread at end of April. The contest is not settled as further snow at DEN or other locations could change the order of finish. The measurable snow season lasts through May at some locations. Projections to end of month based on balancing warm and cold spells next ten days in east, continued warmth in PHX and continued current trends in DEN and SEA. Will post some preliminary scoring based on these estimates. 28th _ Tweaked the end of month projections, some have changed a bit, others were okay. BUF had 1.4" more snow on the 27th, waiting for this cold spell to end to update the tables and bring them over to here at end of April. No other new snow reported as of end of 27th. 30th _ Posting end of month estimates that has been edited to completion overnight into May 1st. Also, snowfall contest update has been added to scoring table. -

Record Low Maxima, Minima by Years _ NYC The intention was to add logs of record low temperatures to the annual summaries for NYC, but editing those already long posts seems to be straining the pagination to the extent that I can't be very confident that the posts will edit without freezing up or corrupting the information already in the posts. So with the addition of a disclaimer in the 1869 annual summary, here's what will happen to fill in the details ... for 1869 to 1900 (the starter era for records), the daily max and high min are already posted, so I need to post only the low max and min data for those years. Starting in 1901, only the high max are logged, high min and the low max, min will all be required. The first post here will detail the minimum values for 1869 to 1900, showing the records established in the starter era and then what happened to them, if anything (a lot of them survive to the end of data because the urban heat island was weakest in these decades, and it was a cold climatic era). The cold records often occur together (low max, low min) either on the same day or adjacent days so the tables will be arranged to show these groupings. In all of the following, ER will mean eventual record. If the record set is later tied, that will show as ER (t 1940) etc. All counts of records include 0.5 counts for ties (or 0.333, 0.25, 0.2, 0.167 etc depending on number of ties, there is one low minimum that was tied six times). For starter era records set, that includes ties within the starter era only. For eventual records retained, that includes ties in later years so that if for example a record was set in 1871 and tied in 1893, those two years would be credited with 0.5 originally set records each, and if the record held up but was tied twice more, then they would each be credited 0.25 for eventual records as well as the other two years (which would count 0.33 and 0.25 when they joined the tied grouping for originally set records). The count in the starter era should be interpreted as the count as of end of 1900, obviously the first set of tied records stood alone until tied. However, since this was a starter set, it would not have been too obvious at first what the range of eventual records might look like. By 1900 this was fairly clear. In fact, the average starter low max is only 1.95 F deg higher than the eventual record, so quite a few of them have survived. Any temperatures shown in the tables for low max or low min in brackets are not daily records but are shown to illustrate the range of temperatures associated with the reading that is a record low. The more extreme of days before or after the actual record are used, where applicable, and the date selected is shown when the non-record is not on the same date as the record value shown. (e.g., record low 31 F on Nov 7, 1869, before a low max of 39F on Nov 8th which was not a record; the max on 7th was 43F not shown). This approach may be skipped if the value that would be selected appears anyway for a subsequent or previous date, then a less impressive actual daily associated reading may appear (e.g. Oct 26, 1869, max 47F before record low max next day). Dates that set records for both low max and low min are shown indented and the low max information appears in the first of the two rows of data, the low min in the second row. Note that the expected number of starter year records of each type at random is 11.4 (365/32 or 366/32). The expected number of surviving records is 2.4 (366/153.2). Since this was generally a colder climate era, the average number of surviving records is more than twice the numbers expected for low max and low min. 1869 _ The year set 17.17 starter record low maxima, and 8.5 starter record low minima. Of those, 6.83 and 4.0 have survived to the end of data. The surviving records are the largest total of all years (1888 second at 12.75) but 1888 had 37.67 starter records to make 1875 second place in that category. 1875 still has a surviving low record of some kind in every month except May and July. Nov 30th 1875 holds the lowest max and min for November. (Dec 19 min 1 F not a record) 1876 _ The year had few record cold spells until October, then started to make up its deficit with very cold October and December setting the majority of the records. The two low max records before October were both fairly weak and pushed aside in the 1920s. There were 8.5 record low maxima of which 5.5 have survived, and a count of 12.25 record low minima of which 6 have survived. The second instances in the record log of a "coldest since" a low minimum record were on Apr 30 (34F coldest after the 1874 record of 32F) and Dec 2 when 11F from 1875 was followed in 1876 by a reading of 15F that was later tied in 1886 (for "coldest since"). That made the count for 1876 1.5 for this statistic -- the "coldest since" stat is helpful later on in the urban heat island and warmer climate era, to get a better idea of the cold potential of various more recent years. These very early "coldest since" markers are rare due to the frequency of cold years following (until the 1920s at least). From an original count of 15.5 low maxima, the surviving count was 6.0, and from 18.0 low minima, there are still 6.7 that have been retained. One (June 2nd) has been tied four times since being set (hence the 0.7 portion as another has been tied once). All of these retained records are in November as December 1917 took out several records set in December 1880 at the end of the month. The second half of November 1880 is one of the most significant cold spells of the NYC (and also Toronto) climate record, relative to normal. There were two "coldest since" record low minima; 36F on Oct 25 was one of five such readings following the 1879 record of 29F, and 6F on Dec 10 was coldest after the record of 3F set in 1876. Jan 24th with a low maximum of 6F is the coldest such reading in January although December has had lower values. (Also it is probable that Jan 22, 1857 was colder). Mid-May and early December were the coldest parts of the year relative to normal. There was also one "coldest since" reading in 1882, on Nov 6th when a low of 30F (later tied in 1953) was coldest since the record of 27F set in 1879. It was also 31F on that date in 2012 which probably indicates a structurally colder air mass given the strength of the urban heat island at the various times of previous records. Mid-July was exceptionally cool. But the year only generated 3.5 record low maxima and none of them have survived. From 7.67 record low minima, 6.0 have survived. This suggests that 1890 was taking advantage of the weak urban heat island to score durable records by radiational cooling in fairly marginal air masses by modern standards. There were no "coldest since" low minimum records set. The extinction date for 1890 low maxima was Aug 24, 1937. This is earlier than any of the other years that had record low maxima and failed to retain any. Before 1890 became the first extinct year in this regard, 1936 became the first year not to record any record low maxima, followed by 1939. The next extinction for a year with records was in 1940 (for 1908). Thus by 1940, four years had no record low maxima (1890, 1908, 1936 and 1939). From 13.33 low maximum records set in the starter era, 7.7 have been retained, and surprisingly this is the highest number for any year after 1888. Within the starter era, 1894 ranks 13th of 32 for starter records set and also falls behind 1903 so is 14th overall, but ranks 7th for those that have survived (and therefore is seventh overall since no years surpassed it afterwards). For low minima, 1894 had 10.17 in the starter era and of those only 2.5 survived. The coldest part of the year relative to normal appears to be July but the various records are sprinkled through the entire year, and in addition, there are three "coldest since" record low minima, with a count of 2.5, these being Feb 24th (2F the lowest minimum after the -1F record set in 1873), June 7th (48F was coldest after record of 47F in 1879) and July 10th (56F coldest after 1890 record of 55F which prevented this from being the fourth consecutive daily record set (only one of the other three survives today, see table below). This was reduced from 178.5 as recently as March 28th of 2022 (1893 lost a record to 2022). So that means that almost half the days of the calendar year have a low maximum at least tied if not outright owned by a starter year. The count for low minima is 149.2, which means that about 40% of all days have a record low minimum from the starter era. For those 149.2 eventual minima, those with later ties could not produce a "coldest since" value, as those are only valid after the last tie. So from about 140 candidates, 30.233 "coldest since" values were set, not the pace reached in later decades, but given that later decades would have more candidates, probably a fairly similar actual pace, and also it should be noted, as this was a cold epoch without much urban heat island, any really cold night would be quite likely to set a record rather than go "coldest since." The decades with the most "coldest since" values are the 1930s (to 1940) and the 1960s to 1970, and 1970s to 1980. The next sets of tables will document how the remaining years changed various starter era records.

The discussion of extreme warmth in March does not include any reference to the consecutive record breaking Marches of 1945 and 1946 which were just before the era of reliable upper air measurements. It is quite plausible from the surface temperatures that 500 mb heights in late March 1945 were similar to the records set recently. Also, what about late March 1998, there were some very high surface temperatures recorded then. For NYC, March 1945 remains top monthly average (51.1) ahead of 2012 (50.9) with 1946 in third place (49.8). Daily records of 84F and 86F were set on March 28-29, 1945, matched by 86F on March 31, 1998. I think there were some places in the northeastern US that came very close to 90F in late March 1945. The notable warmth was repeated in many places in late March 1946 (Toronto actually had a higher reading that year and set its monthly record of 80F). At Toronto the order of the three months was 2012, 1945 and 1946. Any attempt to separate out natural and anthropogenic factors involved should include these two very warm months as well as the rest of the recent data.

Just a follow up, that record low pressure was at the location I mentioned (Cartwright) and the station nowadays does not record daily precip amounts, unfortunately, just temperatures and pressures hourly. There may be a record of the snowfall somewhere but it's not on the historical weather section of the official website for Canada. As to pictures, would imagine it looks something like the remaining part of this post: ----- ^ ____ ^ ----- ---- : : ------ (stunted trees) ------ (truck)

I looked up their climate data, the average winter snowfall is 182" and the maximum snow depth on record is 138" on Apr 7, 2003. They could perhaps make a killing hosting weather weenies, I live in a fairly snowy location but these numbers are like you might see on Mount Baker or high up in the Coast Ranges of BC. They have a cool, foggy summer but occasional visits from hot air masses so it has been up to 98F in July once.

Update to the storm's progress into Labrador ... probably not quite a Canadian low pressure record if the 940.2 mb of 1-20-1977 (St Anthony NL) is correct as per Chris Burt's Wunderground blog. The lowest at Cartwright on the southeast coast of Labrador was 946 mb as the low tracked close to that location about eight hours ago. It is shown over the Labrador Sea at 932 mbs and current model depictions take it to 930 mb around 58N directly south of Greenland's southern tip. Just a note about "NL" designation, back in the day Newfoundland was the full name of the province and NF was used, but that changed to Newfoundland and Labrador so nowadays NL is used for all locations including those on the island (where 95% of the province's people reside). Labrador is almost uninhabited other than a cluster of towns inland near the Goose Bay air force base and Churchill Falls hydro dam. If you are familiar with the outline of Labrador even on a basic weather chart, you will know that there's a large inlet (known as Lake Melville although it is a salt water extension of Hamilton Inlet) in south-central Labrador, and the towns mentioned are near the western end of the Lake. Cartwright is located on the second fairly prominent inlet that is south of that larger one. There has been a weather station there for about a century even though it is a very small place (about 500 people). Cartwright is one of about half a dozen outports along the coast, Hopedale is further north to the north of Hamilton Inlet, and a number of small towns including Red Bay are located on the Strait of Belle Isle across from the northern peninsula of Newfoundland. There is a road connection up the inland portion of the east coast to Cartwright (a ferry connects the coast to roads in Newfoundland) and you can also get to Goose Bay from Sept Isles Quebec and Labrador City located in the far west of Labrador. Cartwright has been reporting severe blizzard conditions all day, heavy snow, NW winds now in the range of 40-60 mph and temperatures of about -8 C. I will see if they come up with a snowfall total tomorrow and report back on that. It's possible that some uninhabited portion of the coast had a reading close to 940 mb as the low tracked out to sea but that won't count as a record.

March 2022 temperature forecast contest

Snowfall Forecast Contest Departures (errors) This table will track the departures of each forecaster, those which are in italics and underlined are forecasts already passed by actual amounts; those departures (errors) can only increase with more snow. All other departures (errors) can be reduced by new snowfalls. The actual snowfalls are the latest available for each station. A reminder, our contest is based on total winter snowfall, not any portion such as Dec to Mar, so it includes anything that might fall in April and May. The table is now in order of least total departures. _________________________________ DCA __NYC __BOS ___ ORD __DTW __BUF __ DEN __SEA __BTV ___ Total dep (to date -- April 28) _____________ 13.2 __ 17.9 __ 54.0 ___ 32.8 __ 47.1 ___ 97.4 __47.1 __ 9.2 __70.7 RodneyS ________________________ 12.8 __ 25.0 __ 45.0 __ 54.0 __ 42.0 __ 91.0 __ 48.0 __12.0 __ 75.0 RodneyS _________________________ 0.4 ___ 7.1 ____ 9.0 ___ 21.2 ___ 5.1 ____ 6.4 ___ 0.9 __ 2.8 ___ 4.3 ______ 57.2 DonSutherland 1 __________________9.4 __ 27.3 __ 44.9 __ 35.1 __ 28.3 __ 84.0 __ 43.4 __ 9.5 __ 71.5 DonSutherland 1 __________________3.8 ___ 9.4 ___ 9.1 ____ 2.3 __ 18.8 ___13.4 ____ 3.7 __ 0.3 ___ 0.8 ______ 61.6 Roger Smith ______________________17.5 __ 32.5 __ 50.7 __ 44.8 __ 49.5 __107.2 __ 52.0 __10.5__ 82.2 Roger Smith ______________________ 4.3 __ 14.6____ 3.3 __ 12.0 ___ 2.4____ 9.8 ___ 4.9 ___ 1.3 __ 11.5 ______ 64.1 wxallannj ________________________12.0 __ 28.0 __ 36.0 __ 38.0 __ 36.0 __ 92.0 __ 41.0 __11.0 __ 95.0 wxallannj ________________________ 1. 2 __ 10.1 ___ 18.0 ___ 5.2 ___ 11.1 ___ 5.4 ____6.1 ___1.8 __ 24.3 ______ 83.2 RJay _____________________________ 5.0 __ 20.0 __ 42.0 __ 40.0 __ 34.0 __ 90.0 __ 50.0 __13.0 __100.0 RJay _____________________________ 8.2 ____ 2.1 __ 12.0 ____ 7.2___13.1 ____ 7.4 ___ 2.9 ___ 3.8 __ 29.3 _____ 86.0 hudsonvalley21 __________________11.6 __ 30.3 __ 33.8 __ 32.7 __ 32.4 __ 94.0 __ 45.0 __10.2 __108.8 hudsonvalley21 __________________ 1.6 __ 12.4 __ 20.2 ____ 0.1 ___14.7 ____3.4 ____2.1 ___ 1.0 ___ 38.1 ______93.6 so_whats_happening _____________16.0 __ 34.0 __ 62.0 __ 41.0 __ 45.0 __ 74.0 __ 36.0 __11.0 __ 91.0 so_whats_happening ______________2.8 __ 16.1 ____ 8.0 ___ 8.2 ____2.1 __ 23.4 ___ 11.1 ___1.8 __ 20.3 ______ 93.8 Deformation Zone ________________ 8.0 __ 18.0 __ 36.0 __ 38.0 __ 44.0 __ 70.0 __ 24.0 __ 4.0 __ 86.0 Deformation Zone ________________ 5.2 ____ 0.1 __ 18.0 ____5.2 ___ 3.1 ___ 27.4 __ 23.1 __ 5.2 __ 15.3 _____ 102.6 wxdude64 _______________________20.0 __ 38.0 __ 54.0 __ 52.0 __ 47.0 __104.0__ 58.0 __13.0 __105.0 wxdude64 ________________________ 6.8 __ 20.1 ____0.0 __ 19.2 ____ 0.1 ___ 6.6 __ 10.9 ___3.8 __ 34.3 _____ 102.8 Tom ______________________________17.7 __ 36.9 __ 46.1 __ 48.7 __ 47.8 __ 94.4 __ 65.2 __ 8.1 __102.2 Tom ______________________________ 4.5 __ 19.0 ___ 7.9 ___ 15.9 ___ 0.7 ___ 3.0 ___18.1 ___ 1.1 ___ 31.5 ______ 103.7 BKViking _________________________ 8.0 __ 28.0 __ 42.0 __ 44.0 __ 25.0 __ 88.0 __ 55.0 __22.0__ 85.0 BKViking _________________________ 5.2 ___ 10.1 ___12.0 __ 11.2 __ 22.1 ____ 9.4 ____ 7.9 __ 12.8 __ 14.3 _____ 105.0 Scotty Lightning _________________10.0 __ 23.0 __ 38.0 __ 44.0 __ 38.0 __106.0 __ 49.0 __ 7.0 __129.0 Scotty Lightning _________________ 3.2 ___ 5.1 ____16.0 __ 11.2 ____ 9.1 ____ 8.6 ___ 1.9 ___ 2.2 __ 58.3 ______ 115.6 mean of forecasts _______________12.3 __ 28.4 __ 44.2 ___ 42.7 __ 39.1 __ 91.2 __ 47.2 __10.9 __ 94.2 mean of forecasts _______________ 0.9 __ 10.5 ____ 9.8 ____ 9.9 ____8.0 ___ 6.2 ___ 0.1 ___ 1.7 ___23.5 _______ 70.6 (3rd-4th) ==================================== These departures will continue to be updated. 3/12 Event: Winters Last Hurrah at Least East of Mountains
Roger Smith replied to Weather Will's topic in Mid Atlantic
Low is in western NC tracking towards central VA and should pass about 30-50 miles southeast of DCA by 12-13z. Expect snow to begin in DC and BAL around 0730h EST. Thunder-sleet likely around 0600-0730h. If you follow golf, you'll know they are fearing the potential of severe storms around JAX around 9 a.m. and this satellite image shows them developing over the eastern Gulf. Link will probably be current at any time you might be reading this post. -
March 12 Rain to…more rain? Maybe some snow
Roger Smith replied to HoarfrostHubb's topic in New England
I wonder if you could get severe storm conditions with a snow squall along a sharply defined arctic front. This could approach that limit in se MA and RI. -
The storm is now modelled to reach 922 mbs south of Greenland by Monday. That's crazy low pressure, the North Atlantic non-tropical cyclone record is 916 mbs. The all-time lowest pressure in Canada is 940.2 mbs set on Jan 10, 1977 at St Anthony Newfoundland which is on the northern tip of the island near the Strait of Belle Isle. (source: C. Burt, Weather Underground blog). This may give it a run as it continues to deepen heading offshore from Labrador on Sunday. I will keep an eye on hourlies from Labrador and see what happens.

It's a 12" storm going at three times the normal speed so that means 4" give or take. (you take) -

Still some spread in track guidance but with the eastward trend on NAM and given its superior performance in other storms, inclined to boost my earlier airport predictions by about a full doubling to 3" BWI and DCA, 5" IAD. Probably 4, 5, 7 would be the upper limit. -

In the east there looks to be a tendency for the storm track to be rather far south to sustain much warmth, but at the same time the next large cold outbreak after the coastal storm on the weekend seems to be the last one for a while. Expecting a lot of days not that far from average in all regions. (21st) _ The anomalies have remained fairly static and the projections recognize that this trend is fairly resistant to change although some much colder air is shown for ORD at times next week. Final monthly anomalies are generally on the same side of normal as current ones, with slight reductions. DEN and IAH should approach normal.
