  1. The eternal forecast dilemma. 33 and rain or 34 and rain.
  2. 32.7 here. Warm enough overnight to take care of the rest of the snow/ice that was on the driveway, but the elevated surfaces are still frozen.
  3. The orange (40dbz+) areas are fun. How about some massive kudos to the models that saw the "retreat" of the sleet line during the heavy dumps. Really impressive.
  4. Yeah, we have some graupel and rimed flakes mixing in. Still mostly -sn
  5. RadarScope indicates a lightning strike in WV with the stuff coming our way.
  6. 2.0” now, 0.8” in the last hour. An indication of the size of this storm, it is pouring snow in my hometown in MN right now from the same system.
  7. For anyone worried about the “hole” to the south, that isn’t our problem from DC north. The current radar and all the modeling indicates that the second round of precip is from the expansion/enhancement of the shield from the west. The remaining question is whether that can get here in time to head off the sleet line (which is coming, but can be effectively slowed by heavier precip). Ob: Nice fat flakes falling. Not pouring snow, but not exactly a lazy fall either.
  8. 7am CoCoRaHS ob: 1.2” snow, 0.08” precip suck it, Ferrier scheme coming down awesome in the yellows
  9. I’d have to think that there is something amiss with the Ferrier scheme in this scenario. That is implying a sub 5:1 ratio which is really hard to come by. That said, if you thought the 00z HRRR was bad, 01z upped the bar there.
  10. I’m surprised we haven’t had more days like this. Nice catch.
  11. I didn’t really notice any non-snow forms here, but there were a lot of needle snowflakes which are just awful for accumulation.
  12. DCA beat me too. 9.8” on 1.01” precip. Almost perfectly a 10:1 ratio on the storm However, and I don’t know if this held everywhere, but ratios were terrible yesterday. 8:1 here. I’m guessing it was the non-accumulating snow from 7am to 2pm that did it.
  13. Made it past the 8” mark. 2.8” since 7am, most of it in the last couple of hours.
  14. Big clumped dendrites. This is the stuff that can accumulate quickly.
  15. I shoveled at 8am and my driveway/sidewalk is wet. Radar along 66 looks good. Would be awesome to get 2” more.
  16. And the plow driver spun out on my street. Not a great day to be out. ~6”
  17. 5.3” on 0.44” precip, so we did do ok on ratios.
  18. Everyone was all in on the Kuchera maps. We’re totally going to end up at 10:1
