  1. Time sensitive, but we have to hope this huge blob headed toward central NJ doesn't drift too far south: https://weather.cod.edu/satrad/?parms=subregional-Mid_Atlantic-02-24-1-100-1&checked=map&colorbar=undefined
  2. Lots of reasons for this, but one big one is that the aggregate vehicle fleet is MUCH cleaner than it was in the 1980s, and much cleaner than it was in 2000s. All of the hybrids and EVs, and tougher fuel efficiency standards, have really helped. So has the switch away from coal toward burning natural gas for power.
  3. Yep, put on a KN95 for the first time in a while this AM for the walk to school with my kid. He has reactive airway disease and was really feeling it, so he also wore one. They aren't perfect but they stop some of it. Better than nothing. The sky over the middle school just east of downtown Silver Spring around 845am:
  4. Seems to still be true this am
  5. Salvaged a day in Cape Charles, cloud cover and a breeze but no rain. Temps only in the mid sixties so not exactly beachy. It's very dry down here. Not for long!
  6. Fantastic. This has to be a good omen for winter 23-24 snow totals.
  7. Good thing we booked a house in Cape Charles VA for the weekend! Maybe we'll get tropical storm winds.
  8. I noticed it yesterday AM.
  9. 10 day forecast looking pretty dry on the globals (and the ensembles).
  10. Smoke plume is very visible on GOES: https://weather.cod.edu/satrad/?parms=nrnmidat-02-24-1 Agreed. I vividly remember an extremely dark brown smoke haze in either the summer of 2002 or 2003 in Central PA when I was a teenager. Fires in Canada, I think. It was so bad it made the news.
  11. First "hot" feeling morning here this year. Here's to 100 more!
  12. Rather large ice pellets in a brief shower in Silver Spring after 1pm.
  13. Anyone want to recommend a decent weather station in the $100-$300 range? Looking for rain gauge, wind, UV, the basics.
  14. Got a few sprinkles over the weekend but no substantial rain. Shady areas still have a good deal of soil moisture, but things are drying out as the sun gets stronger. I had planted a few small trees hoping for a rainy spring and I find myself dumping hose water on them---blech.
  15. Had to wait until April 3rd and travel about 700 miles to finally walk on snow this winter; visiting the in-laws near Hancock, ME. Some snowpack left in north-facing and shaded areas from the big storm they got in mid-March. Pic of small frozen lake with glacier covered sandy beach attached!
  16. A bit of white rain near downtown silver spring.
  17. For posterity, all time record digital snow for mid-march??
  18. That storm was such a drippy disappointment in Takoma Park while folks north frolicked in all snow
  19. At this point I'm not even mad that coastal NE may get rocked this weekend. I have no ability to feel jealousy. I am a broken man.
  20. Cars in my neighborhood have a light dusting of pollen from maples and others today.
