wild how much 2014-15 stands out....we also almost had single digits in March, as it was in the single digits on the last day of February!
-
Yeah I'm wondering if warming waters have made this much less likely on the coastal plain now.
-
why is it so tight? are warmer ocean waters responsible for this (and maybe this is why these airmasses don't make it as far south as they once did?)
-
all the cold is going into the west though and none of the long range forecasts I've seen has any cold coming here for awhile. Highs in the 40s (if that's what it is) isn't really cold.
-
widespread 50s and a chance at 60 lows in the 40s I'd call that early spring
-
why is it we no longer get wind advisories or high wind warnings or wind chill advisories or wind chill warnings like we used to?
-
Did that cold also last longer because I remember a two night peak?
-
Isn't this also what happened in January 2004? What were NYC and BOS lowest lows then? Below zero was predicted but I think we got down to 1 two nights in a row. at JFK too
-
what was your low in December? we might tie it-- it was 6 then and might get to 6 now. I'm interested in seeing the number of single digit arctic outbreak shots per season and then the average per decade.
-
Yes it bit him as it should have.
-
My location officially (using JFK for numbers) has not gotten below zero since January 1985 (Reagan's second inauguration)...unofficially, I was measuring temps and snowfall in 1993-94 and I'm pretty sure we went below zero here on the south shore in January 1994.
-
I guess we got caught between two cold shots, the one that went straight down to Texas (more common pathway) and this one which will go just to our east.
-
ocean effect snow storm?
-
Yes it was -3 in NYC and -5 on Long Island. I saved that map lol
-
wood chuck? I know it's chuck something or other LOL
-
February 2015 and even early March had them on the east end I think. SST were at 31 or 32. Freezing drizzle on an easterly wind lol
-
I think these are different names for the same creature groundhog, prairie dog, ground chuck, etc
-
Boston may be like -6 I don't believe even that is possible anymore down where I live (or in NYC for that matter)
-
How much of a difference is there between this arctic shot and the one on VD 2016? Both occured during mild winters.
-
and methane

This is the rainiest California winter since 82-83 and may even exceed that year. Despite what has been going on here this season, this winter has been good news on multiple fronts (warmer so much less heating costs, and lots of rain and snow in California who need it much more than we do.)
-
aren't we supposed to bake in the middle of the month? also the GFS hasn't been anywhere near as good as the Canadian
-
What causes the barrier?

It seems like we had the worst possible series of events this year, an early season el nino type pattern when el ninos are usually backloaded and a late season la nina pattern, when la ninas are usually front loaded or book ends. That back end la nina scenario seems to be our only hope this season and we'd probably need a major SSW for that this season.

or just like 2002....
