    I’m surprised they’ve reported more snow than even Pinkham Notch at 2000’, which has a 10 year average around 140-150”. Not sure which numbers to believe, or whether Randolph has some special upslope.

    Wasn't that storm more of a bust for the mid-Atlantic? It was supposed to be a big one in DC/Baltimore, probably 8-12" or so, but then it bypassed us completely while NYC and Philly ended the millennium with a major storm. I'm guessing up this way it may have tracked too close and become a rainer. It was a very compact storm.

    I've been to Wildcat a number of times, and even met up with Larvay in Gorham after he spent a weekend at SR. But somehow I never quite made my way to Maine. Gotta do that one day.

    Maine remains the only East coast state where I’ve never been.

    I’ve actually never been there, nor have I been to Maine. But I’ve seen pictures and heard good things about it from those who’ve been there, and it made me sad when they shut down.

    My gut feeling says this will be a pretty good winter, but COVID might stop us from fully enjoying it. My main concern is how safe it is to stay at a hotel or AirBnB for any ski weekend in NNE. Based on last winter, which was practically a repeat of 2001-02 and unimpressive even by the standards of my old home, going the extra distance to NNE was worth it just about every single time. It was not too bad up there.

    Yeah it hasn’t been well received from Muslims, though I’ve seen much more outrage and attention from American conservatives. Muslims so far are a lot more outspoken against the live action Mulan, since Disney filmed parts of the movie in Xinjiang, and collaborated with CCP agents who are committing a genocide against the Uyghurs. I am so disgusted by all of it.

    Netflix just started streaming a very creepy film that has rightfully led to many cancellations.

    For me, it was 2002-03 and especially PDII that really got me going with my interest in winter weather. I was too young in 1996.

    Boulder has never had accumulating snow on September 8th or earlier, so if this storm happens as forecast, it will set an all time record. And if it turns out to be a big storm (I was told that the NAM shows 10”), that will make it all even more remarkable.

    I'm hoping we have a vaccine by New Year. If the first half of the season is restrictive, maybe we can at least save the second half.

    I can't remember the last time I've seen a Winter Storm Watch for an area while it was 97 degrees. I'm keeping an eye on Boulder. Even a slight accumulation would be historic for how early this is happening.

    There's only one on my list that I experienced in New England: the Feb 2013 blizzard. Hopefully I'll soon have more to add now that I'm most likely here to stay.

    I did a Shapiro-Wilk test on the precip data through 2017, and it confirmed a normal distribution (or close enough to it). But with 2018 included, that was no longer the case.

    I agree, which is why I ran the numbers using the entire period from 1871 to 2017. I'm not all that comfortable with a sample size of only 30 if I can do better.

    I'm not sure of their exact methods. I guess it would make sense to do that with their 30 year averages since the sample size isn't so big. I know they reduced the totals of Dec 2009 and Feb 2010 a few months after that winter, probably because of measurement issues or some other reason I can't clearly recall.

    I did a Python analysis on Baltimore's precip totals, just cause I felt like it, and it turns out that 2018 single-handedly wrecked the normal distribution. Precip totals are now skewed to the right. Sometimes one extreme outlier is all it takes. Baltimore's final total of 71.82" is over 4 standard deviations above the long-term pre-2018 average.

    Ouch, sorry that happened. I also watched it from inside for the most part. Around mid-morning on the 16th, I went out to try getting some logs for the fireplace (we lived in the woods back then) but then the snow was too heavy so I just stayed inside for the rest of the day and watched it pile up. It was an incredible sight.

    How well do you remember PDII? That one was also huge, and it was the first HECS that I remember well (I was way too young in 1996).

    I'm starting to wonder whether this March will end up colder than not only February, but also January and December. Some of the guidance is predicting some scary cold for the next few weeks, and since the actual met winter months have been so mild, I think we have a shot at March being colder than any of them, not just relative to normal but also in an absolute sense. I wonder how many times that has happened. Probably in 1960, but that sure isn't easy to achieve.

    I think we just need to remind ourselves (even though most of us already know it) that winters that are this bad, aren't the norm at all. Winters where the Carolinas to SE VA, as well as the cities north of 40N get big storms, while we get almost nothing, are NOT NORMAL. Otherwise, the whole "DC sucks" narrative gets out of control like it just before the last 3 good winters.
