I thought we would compile a ratings list of all of the factors that go into grading our winter. Then give an overall grade...

I thought this winter definitely went out with a bang with one of the best March winters I can remember. Even for never really getting a Major storm (My biggest was 9) this was still a great winter for the persistent cold and record breaking lows. It's a shame December was so warm, or else this may have gotten an A

Criteria

Consistent Cold: A

Snowpack consistency: B-

Number of Snowfall events: B+

Major Snow Event(s): D

December: D+

January: C

February: A-

March: A+

Overall Grade: B+

A. Yeah we had a slow start to winter, but still ended up with above average snow, combined with below normal temps which created a snowpack that seemed to last forever! That was awesome! I could have taken my kids sledding anyday I wanted from late January till early March!! ha ha ha That's unheard of! Typically we only have a few days to go sledding after a storm before it melts. Doesn't happen too often in a typical winter around here where we have a snowpack like that! Plus all the ice on the local waterways was incredible. Yeah we missed out on a Kocin storm this year in Central Jersey, which would have been icing on the cake, but I can't complain at all. This was a great winter overall. :snowman:

I think I may have to rate this winter as an anomaly. With the AO and NAO neutral to mostly positive, the PDO went wildly positive (record levels)  creating the -EPO that was  sustained from mid January on.. May not see something like this year for a long while. Considering what may have happened I'll give it an A.

A+  Cold and most snowy November i have seen imby ever, i like early winter. Dec flopped but the cold January and ludicrous cold February and March made up for that. Sixth snowiest winter for me back to 78 and impossible to know the exact number of days with snow on the ground but near 96 levels and even surpassed last year.

Now if i had to choose an A+ winter to relive it would certainly be 96, 78 or last winter to this one. But for me this one was better than 2010 and 2003, more impact locally and colder. Certainly a dividing line type winter with upper SEPA on a line northeast to NYC benefiting from elevation and latitude.

Some may see this as over generous but I take into consideration this is the mid atlantic and not Boston or New England with my rating

2014 A+

2010 A+

2003 A+

1996 A+

1978 A+

Some others would be

2011 A

1987 A

1994 A

2004 B

2005 B

2009 B-

2013 C+

2002, 2008, 2012  0.0 F

Reposting my grade from The NYC forum:

B+. Almost completely missed the Jan blizzard here. Holidays were warm and snowless. Total snowfall just slightly above average. But Feb was one of the most memorable winter months ever for cold. Prolonged cold from Jan-Mar. And lots of tracking.

I tend to like winter coldest from the Holidays through January if there has to be a split, so that also helped keep it from an A. Seems I just missed some of the larger accumulations that would have made it an A.

Positives:

Continuous cold

Lots of threats to track

Significant snowcover nonstop from late January to the first 1/3rd of March

Negatives:

Fringejobs again

No 6"+ events

Snow didn't live up to the bitter cold

Average snowfall while everyone south and east had big positive departures and in some cases more snowfall for the season

December

Overall grade: C

I'll give this winter a B. This winter has trolled me pretty hard which was pretty painful. Also, the cold was a little overdone, but amazing to think about. 3 degrees in March is pretty insane. Most of the winter was disappointing, with a lot of dry arctic air and overall crap storms. There were a couple "big" ones, and they were both in March. 5.5 and 7 inches both in March, along with some surprise snows too. The other months were insanely dissappointing, with an estimate of 15 inches of snow. There was a pretty long stretch of snow cover this year, something we might not see in a while. Though, there were just a bunch of minor events, and a couple with high anticipation and dream-destroying results, most notably the January "blizzard." Though, the winter was interesting, but the pattern change we saw in December got pushed out in to oblivion. I wonder what we would of saw if that pattern change really happened. Oh well.

The grade here is a B also. Mainly due to a solid A from mid February through March 20th, even beyond with the snowpack that stuck around for a few days. The cold gave a more modest snow cover almost as much staying power as last winter's. While here we didn't achieve the days of continuous snow cover we had last winter, it was still impressive.

With the exception of the Jan. 6th clipper, January into early February was a series of teases and fringe jobs here. November and December reminded me of why I would always trade November snow for December snow.

Still, the finish was awesome, and as much as it's tough hanging in there waiting for a backloaded winter, I'm going into spring feeling "winter-satisfied".
